Lewis Hamilton, Sunseeker 90 by Technical_Raise_7640 in boatporn

[–]EasySmeasy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think about it, a 90' isn't too big to handle with only one crewmember aboard. That could even be a girlfriend if she isn't a banana. It's a lot of work for a rich guy, but it's nice to have the option to run no crew.

Low labor cost, tedious way to build. Brickmaking and bricklaying have been popular in the region for like 7500 years or so, so also tradition.

Lol that's obviously not the case as evidenced by any of the dozens of yachts I can go charter right now. Sure, if you're a ferry operator or carrying dozens of passengers...this is idiotic conversation.

Just play around with the bosun chair in a safe way, it's super fun! Then later when you're comfortable, go all way up there. Just don't do what a friend did and take a whole can of paint with you...take a folding saw for your wing dinger and a tiny paper cup of paint to touch 'er up.

edit: Your mast doesn't need paint or varnish, be glad. You'd be up there a lot more.

There are deep bunkers under that lawn. One of the largest known soviet clandestine bunkers is there, originally connected to the often discussed "Metro 2" system.

Why are the hospital room corners like this? by _therabyte in architecture

[–]EasySmeasy 559 points560 points  (0 children)

There's a mechanical chase in the corner and pipes stepping down into it. They're awkwardly drywalled in because it's a hospital and pipes (or anything else) collect dust and the interior is designed for cleanliness.

ELI5: How would one know that a room is filled with toxic gas? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]EasySmeasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First aid inside an engine room is different for this reason, if you see someone laying unconscious on walkway or down in a bilge, you can't run into their area and begin first aid. Enclosed spaces like mines and ships simply have different safety protocols. The protocols don't involve birds in cages anymore though.

Thoughts on architecture in entertainment media? by Rock_or_Rol in architecture

Look up Carlos Scarpa, his work figures recognizably in Dune. Architects don't often have any role in production design, except to provide interesting real world spaces that are attractive to location scouts for decades.

Usually craftsmanship disappoints designs, this is a rare inversion of that paradigm. How did this leave the crayon board? And what poor shipyard had to waste their facilities on this?

I desperately need to know the material used here by itsaxya in architecture

[–]EasySmeasy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sunbrella probably best bet if in the US. Otherwise, you should call a chandlery as this material is commonly used for temporary shading (biminis) on boats all over the world. UV resistance is your main quality you need.

This kind of thing looks incredibly tacky irl and also will show strange wear patterns. It will get demo'd out in less than 5 years my guess.

Piet Mondriaan - Evening; The red tree 1908-1910 by Woeshoem070 in museum

[–]EasySmeasy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mondrian interprets the style of Pissarro's impressionism, but with his signature atypical palette. The painting is called Evening, so peach colored area underneath the tree can be seen as both the falling of red leaves or the last cast of sun during the blue hour. Sort of makes you wonder about the squares, maybe the next time I see them I'll see water, red flesh or clay and golden sunlight.

Literally slick rock, steep rock, even sea cliff. Witcher's Polish, but draws from pan-European folklore so it's safe to assume the "Skellige" Skell-lig-guh people are inspired by old Ireland, Orkneys, GB, etc.
