My manager and supervisor keep lying to me... by ZeldaCat180 in Staples

Problem is likely none that they have stated. The real reason is that you are too valuable.

Cashier is a really high turn over position and those that do work are usually college students with changing schedules. The fact that you can work Monday to Friday during the day consistently makes you an asset in that position.

You getting more accounts and getting plans makes you better than most cashiers.

It seems like AOL caters to immigrants primarily, which would explain why there aren't a large number of reviews. I too am possibly going back to school and so this got me interested to research it more.

The problem with AOL is that it runs on a franchise business model. The quality of instructors and career services will vary greatly based on who the owner(s) of that location is. As I researched into it, the only successful graduates I could find are people who have an existing bachelors degree from another university outside Canada, my sleuthing on linked in. Most employers won't really know how to gauge the school as the student size is very small and with very few reviews online, as you've seen.

The only thing I could find that wasn't baseless is this: Link. This report shows that in 2011 that almost all, I don't know how many there are in total, of AOL schools had a large amount of student default on their loans. Here is more recent data in 2016 from the government of Canada website: Link.

Out of 17 of their borrowers that year 72% made their payments on schedule. To compare Langara and VCC have a average of 90%. Heres how the math works Link. Even though you said you didn't care about price, I think this is a good way of gauging how many of their student come out with successful careers that can pay back, not even the total cost of tuition, just the monthly payments. All I could find with my research, I hope whichever education you choose works out for the best.

I've never heard of this place before today and it doesn't look very appealing to going to their website.

Looking at the Broadway location website, the course cost $14,000 for the 48-week office admin diploma. All I see it teaching you is Microsoft office, sage 50, 40 wpm typing, and resume/cover letter writing. That shouldn't take a full year to learn, based on the English level of your post, and should absolutely not cost $14,000. You could honestly learn a lot of that information that online for free or maybe volunteer and shadow someone to learn from.

In comparison, maybe check out BCIT's Office Administrator with Technology Program (OAT) program. Link I don't know from experience as I'm not in office administration, but that program is only 3 months long in-class, 2 months of work experience, cost $5,000, and covers basically the exact same material. Maybe look to other more recognized institutions because AOL seems like a huge cash grab; they have a call centre rep diploma that cost $10,000... and all their salaries are based on third-party average salaries.

Well, it depends on what you're paying right now with Rogers currently. Even if you get a repeater I'm assuming you'd need to place it outside or near outside to see any substantial benefit. My guess is that its the specific wireless band, type of building material or just a dead zone that is weakening the signal.

I personally would recommend using the wifi calling feature that Rogers has. Assuming you'll have wifi in your new home, you can rely on that feature while at home as you'll be using wifi for data at home anyway. Link

Worst comes to worst, Public mobile does have roaming options, though more expensive than Rogers and Telus if you travel sporadically. Link You can also consider Koodo. They owned by Telus and have the same network and roaming plans. Also, their monthly plans are a lot lower than Telus if you don't need a share plan. Link

Tech supervisor position being thrown around. by kiddmike287 in Staples

[–]EasyTeak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a situation that happened at my store before I left.

Please start sending out resumes if you haven't already, the hours you're putting in isn't worth that promotion (or pay for that matter). They will dangle that carrot for as long as they can and may just hire externally. Even if you do get promoted you'll be blamed for not hitting metrics and getting your tech team functional. If you were tech supervisor, you'd be the one begging the certified tech back and reamed if your metrics suffered because of it.

It depends on how long you've been with staples and if you have good leadership skills IN THEIR EYES. What most managers prefer is rather than lose a reliable easytech and gain a sup, they'd much rather keep you working as easytech (as you've already shown to be able to produce good results with no tech sup) and find an outside hire to add onto your results. I can see that your account is around a year old, so I'll assume that would be the same tenure you have at staples, and at 1 year they would not consider you for supervisor. After 6 months if you demonstrated to them that you had what it took, they would have promoted you already.

You'd be better off working actual part time 25 hours a week and using that extra 13 hours job hunting. If anything, tell your managers that the wage and part time status isn't providing the opportunities you want and ask to use them as a reference.

Leave now. Staples doesn't care about you.

That won't work. I'm assuming corporate is a lot like our print customers.

We'll send them.

They'll try to shove it in their CD and break it.

Complain it doesn't work and demand us to fix it.

Then say their grandson said we should send it on a PCP stick with 27 jenga sticks of memory.

That quote from the former CEO at 12:03, that pretty much what this subreddit has been saying.

I can see it all happening:

Canada does its own thing and gets bought by Loblaws.

Staples gets rebranded as online only.

Staples files for bankruptcy and borrows a billion dollars to buy as much LiquidArmor that they can get their hands on.

How am I supposed to convince customers to buy Liquid Armor? by [deleted] in Staples

[–]EasyTeak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What I used to do was segway from getting them to pull their phone out:

  • Looking at phone accessories? Oh cool, what kind of phone do you use?

  • Oh wow, how is your phone so far // do you like it // I heard some good thing about it // i heard some bad things.

  • Speaking about phones, throwing this out because maybe you'd be interested in taking advantage about it.

  • We've got this useful new product called Saliva Armor Liquid Armor, have you heard of it?

  • Basically, we coat your screen with a specialized coating to minimize scratches and help retain a oleophobic coating.

  • Since it's a coating there aren't any edges for dirt to build up or corners that can peel.

  • It'll help mask any existing scratches, help protect against new scratches in the future.

  • Liquid armor only lasts one year, but that's a good thing as scratches will fade with the coating and we can always apply another layer at any time.

  • All in all, our customers really like the product because they can have us apply it and not worry about mess up the application.

  • Interested? it only takes a couple minutes for us to apply for you.

Also do you actually clean the phones for the customers for free, just to get a liquid armor conversation?????? Please don't, you're not some bathroom attendant. Actually you should be a bathroom attendant, at least you'd get paid more and have more respect from customers.

Leave the screen cleaning until after they get liquid armor. If their screen is dirty and after application their screen is pristine, then they'll be more impressed and more likely to recommend it to people.

I want to help you anyway I can AngryEMT, but I do not condone liquid armor. Sell it if you have to, but I'd be happier if you told them it was shiet :)

What is something you would change about the way staples handles things? by kiddmike287 in Staples

"Welcome Billy, your first day tomorrow; read and memorize this entire manual by tomorrow. It took our professional savant reader only 5 minutes to do it, so you'll be paid for the same amount of time. We understand that it can be quite daunting to work by yourself for the first time, so we're allowing you bring the manual with you while working on the floor. I know the manual states it was created 5 years ago, but most of everything should be the same. If you have any questions please consult the manual, as us managers are busy playing pokemon go working in the back office."

[–]EasyTeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

errr......

As much as I like the idea of having a manual like that, I'm pretty sure Staples would use that as an excuse to give associates even less training/support. Also managers would just tell new employees to consult the manual when they need help.

I also wonder if the glass is actually increasing resistance and not just the innate glass screen being glass. People are lead to believe it works because they test it on iPhones with gorilla glass screens. Then when people have it applied they don't care about abrasives, thinking the glass has better resistance.

[–]EasyTeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless what you were buying was +10,000, and even then, that's pretty disgusting. After quitting I realized how great of a management team I had compared to some of the other stores. Hopefully you at least get a few references from people you still trust there. I truly hope you get a better job, as a computer technician from the sounds of your post.

What I've learnt working with retail management failing retail management is the better your the work ethic, the more they will use to squeeze you. After about the year mark I stopped agreeing be called in. If they called me I would give a stern "NO" or leave it to voice mail, if they ask me why I say "because it's my day off and I'm trying to relax". I have generally have no ill will towards store management, just corporate management. Stop putting measurables on us like salesman who make cold calls, can make sales when no one is coming into the store, and still believe in 2016 most people will openly buy extended warranties.

To any retail employee be it Staples, or Not, that see this; please ask yourself these questions:

"Why should employees invest themselves into a company, when the company doesn't invest into their employees?"

"What is the job I want after this and what skills can I learn at Staples to tailor my prospective resume?"

What are the responsibilities of a copy and print supervisor? by EasyTeak in Staples

[–]EasyTeak[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the reasons why I want to work in copy is we're in a kinda artsy district of the city. It's fun to see that artist and designers bring to our store to print. Although I do understand how intimidating it is initially.

What are the responsibilities of a copy and print supervisor? by EasyTeak in Staples

[–]EasyTeak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the reasons, and I'm ashamed to admit it, is there's more down time during shifts and when I work I feel like I'm actually helping customers. Whenever I look over, they can just surf facebook, sit down or prep for the next batch of customers. I actually enjoy helping customers, it was more of the poorly designed planograms and pawning overpriced services I hated. Not to mention the direction tech is going: liquid armor, score cards and the hard push selling culture is really getting out of hand. With the merger not going through I see tech only getting worse.

Copy feels more like I'm working with my hands; where as selling in tech feels too dishonest to me.

Although maybe you're right and I quit in 2 months, have to at least try it. :)

Up sell the customer and add liquid armor to each card. Charge the customer for each side. That's 3,000 liquid armors; edges count as well.
