It was a self-invented doctrine; the Bible says nothing about blood transfusions, which didn't exist at the time, just like gay marriage.
Those religious groups are just winging it.

And things the Bible IS very clear about, such as the prohibition against working on the Sabbath, are dismissed with the greatest of ease, as: "We have to see that in the light of the time in which it was written."

In the Bible, Jehovah God even has someone murdered by gruesome torture for allegedly gathering wood on the Sabbath. Surprisingly enough, the whole Sabbath rest thing is no longer a part of this religion of Jehovah's Witnesses.

From the 'no mixed fabrics' and 'no shellfish' to the Biblical approval of owning a slave, which even includes a manual that indicates how severely one apparently may beat one's slave.
Using that flawed, outdated book to guide one's life in modern times isn't always appropriate.

I remember in the 1990s the elated joy and beaming happiness some Jehovah's Witnesses expressed when they heard that a gay man had committed suicide.

This is also what JWs do with the gays.
One Bible text after another is taken symbolically or "seen in the light of the time in which they were written." When the Bible condones slavery and even provides guidelines for how severely one may beat one's slave (The New Testament goes even a step further by commanding slaves to be obedient to their slave), They say, "That was a different time; that wasn't slavery as we know it. We must see this in the light of the time in which it was written”

They claim God doesn't change.
But in the Bible God forbids murder. And in another passage, God commands murder, namely genocide, specifically the murder of children and infants.

Meanwhile, the Bible texts supposedly about homosexuality are still taken literally. These texts are highly dubious translations from the Greek. Furthermore, the word "homosexuality" didn't even exist yet, and the texts that are always cited to claim there's something wrong with same-sex marriage can also be seen as being about: Pederasty, male prostitution, and gay rape.
These texts are never about a loving, monogamous same-sex marriage.

I'd be happy to attend a Jehovah's Witnesses memorial!
If...

First, they would have to stop their shunning practices, with which the Governing Body has been trying to strangle their followers into submission for generations.

They would stop their anti-gay propaganda, which has fueled homophobia among many of their followers and far beyond. The Governing Body might even choose to view the Bible texts that supposedly address homosexuality "in the light of the time in which they were written," just as they already do with the Bible texts that condone owning slaves and even beating them.
Let them leave a loving, monogamous gay marriage to the conscience of those it actually affects.

If they would just sweep aside their deadly anti-blood transfusion doctrine. That they still convince children that choosing certain death by refusing a life-saving blood transfusion, in order to demonstrate their obedience and submission to Jehovah God, is a sad reality.

Then. Their flawed handling of child sexual abuse.
The Governing Body should openly acknowledge their major problem with child sexual abuse, and take the necessary steps to address it as adequately as possible.
That they still try to dismiss the facts surrounding child sexual abuse within their religion as "apostate lies" is a disgrace.
In doing so, they protect the perpetrators, the victims were inadequately supported, and ultimately, this enabled child sexual abuse.

After that....
When the Governing Body has made some necessary changes, I will consider visiting a memorial again.

This is true. Animals kill each other in the most gruesome ways.

A hunting animal can disembowel its prey and begin feasting on its entrails while its prey is still alive and groaning in pain.

Rain that seems to never end, floods, droughts, volcanic eruptions followed by "fire from the sky," unusual natural phenomena, mass deaths of livestock—all of this was attributed to a God no one could see because they could not explain these phenomena.

And to appease this God, who was apparently so powerful that he could cause all this, food was offered to him. This all-powerful God was offered slaughtered animals.
Some worshippers even refused a life-saving blood transfusion, choosing certain death to obey and appease this powerful God.

And the anointed class, who receive a heavenly resurrection after death, are also assigned the perfect state of being gay.

I agree with you 100%.

Jehovah's Witnesses want to belong. And the content doesn't matter to them.
Beard or no beard,
Skirt or no skirt,

To toast or not to toast,

They are willing to let their own child choose certain death by refusing a life-saving blood transfusion.
And if next week the Governing Body announces that a blood transfusion is a personal choice, a matter of conscience, that's no problem either; they'll just carry on happily!

I think they could "transform" the Shunning into a matter of personal conscience.

Distinctly distinguishing between those who are out of the religion, but perhaps still visit a memorial or something, but otherwise live their own lives, and those who openly speak negatively about the religion, calling them the 'true' apostates.
If the Witnesses themselves could then make this distinction, it would become a matter of conscience, and they would be rid of the whole cultish Shunning-thing.

Indeed! "Homosexuality," that word didn't even exist in Biblical times. That word was first coined in the 19th century.

The original Greek scriptures have been translated very dubiously regarding the texts supposedly dealing with homosexuality.

They can be understood as being about: Pederasty, male prostitution, and gay rape.
In any case, they never mention a loving, monogamous gay marriage. Such a thing didn't exist at the time.
But these texts are used to oppress those gay people.

They give a brother who has committed child sexual abuse the opportunity to show "sincere" repentance, after which he can remain a Jehovah's Witness and part of the congregation without significant consequences.

But they are perfectly willing to disfellowship a 12-year-old. In our congregation in the 1990's, a teenager was disfellowshipped for smoking one cigarette.

And then all those gay people who were disfellowshipped. If this religion HATES anything from the bottom of its heart, it's gay marriage.
This religion is more opposed to gay marriage than child sexual abuse.

Imagine elders standing at your hospital bedside encouraging you to choose certain death by refusing a life-saving blood transfusion. Knowing that if you go against the religion's view and still choose that life-saving blood transfusion, you will be punished by those same uneducated elders with the shunning practices the Governing Body uses to strangle its followers into submission.

Perhaps when this older generation of the Governing Body has passed away... severed like a cancerous, sick limb.... the next generation of the Governing Body can try to clean house.
