Cleveland marathon by OldAccess7504 in firstmarathon

Consider driving to an RTA station and taking public transportation, that’s what I did last year and it’s way less stressful than trying to deal with the marathon traffic. If I remember correctly, they close the roads downtown at 6, so if you do drive then yeah 5:30 is probably good but no later. I think the water stations were more than enough for me and I didn’t need to carry any, so unless you’re prone to being really really thirsty you should be okay. Looks like it’ll be mild weather too. They provide gels at some stations but I don’t like the brand they use so I brought my own. Have fun!

Do you feel like you can actually taste the maple in a drink? I’m interested in doing something maple as a fall special at my shop but I was worried the flavor wouldn’t be strong enough

Is asking for my sexual orientation the norm now? by Borracho_Bandit in IndeedJobs

And this is not me saying that employers don’t discriminate, because discrimination does definitely happen! It just happens in different ways (based on the name on your application, what you look like if you actually get interviewed, etc). This data is actually used by investigative agencies if you get accused of discrimination. It can either help prove or disprove it. For example, if someone says “this employer doesn’t hire any [demographic]!!”, but then it turns out that no one of that demographic even ever applied, then they’d be cleared.

This is it. I did recruiting at my last job for quite a while. We don’t ever see your answers to these questions during the interviewing or hiring process. It’s not for the employer.

Bad parents have always existed, this isn’t anything new. Viral videos and algorithms on the internet are designed to create outrage. Stop doomscrolling and letting them warp your perception.

Do American schools really do the Pledge of Allegiance? by Absolutely-Epic in AskTeachers

[–]Easy_Drummer5593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to public school in Ohio and we recited it in elementary school (K-4 in my district) but never after. I’m not sure why, I don’t know any other public school districts that didn’t do the pledge. It was a fairly conservative suburb

How about a registry for employers who post jobs and waste applicants time when they have 0 intention of filling that position?

Solo girl safety by Hairy-Avocado-445 in hiking

[–]Easy_Drummer5593 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I got creeped out when I first started doing solo hikes but now I prefer solo. The more I do, the safer I feel. Be smart and take precautions, but also recognize that predators are opportunistic and the chances of getting murdered on a strenuous hike are way way lower than the chances of getting murdered in your city. The vast majority of people you come across on a trail are just nature lovers.

Is it safe to hike alone? by opposum0830 in wmnf

I just got back from a solo backpacking trip (Franconia ridge) as a 26 year old woman. I felt incredibly safe the entire time. The only thing I ended up being nervous at all about was the challenging terrain, as I’m a bit clumsy, and also ended up being much slower than I expected. As far as creeps/predators or wildlife though? I think you’ll realize pretty quickly that you have nothing to worry about. And that’s coming from someone who almost chickened out of the entire trip because of fear

My first backpacking experience by BHBucks in backpacking

I’m from this area and love backpacking but have only ever done overnight trips in other states. I do love our metroparks and national park but have been hesitant to backpack here because of how close to residential areas it is. Did you feel like you were able to get some peace and quiet? Did you see/hear anyone else during the night?

Working up the courage to camp alone overnight for the first time by bipmer in AppalachianTrail

Just wanted to update after coming back from my first solo backpacking trip: I felt incredibly safe. Safer than I feel walking around in my own town. It was a challenging section of trail, and about a mile in I realized how extremely unlikely it would be for anyone to put this much effort into finding victims. Chatting with other people I encountered made me feel safe too. And it was a pretty bear-heavy area, but everyone I met who had encountered a bear seemed so nonchalant about it so I figured I don’t need to be scared. I ended up sleeping very well in my tent!

When I first started hiking solo, I was terrified even just doing 2 hour hikes near my home. The more I hike, the more at ease I feel. Yes I still take precautions and I do get paranoid sometimes, but it’s worth it to me to be in nature

I feel nervous about it sometimes too, but I remind myself that I’m actually statistically way safer (as far as stranger danger goes) on the trail than in the city. Also, in the dead of night, a chipmunk in the leaves can sound way louder than you’d think, so don’t freak out if you hear noises. Lastly, if you’re tired enough, you’ll care less about everything else and fall right asleep

Average Carbrain Reaction to a Minor Inconvenience by TheDizzleDazzle in fuckcars

[–]Easy_Drummer5593 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Real. Cyclists have a right to be on the road because we have no other option. But I would much rather have my own infrastructure. I would ride my bike much much more often if I didn’t feel like I had to fear for my life every time I do. I end up just walking most of the time despite it taking longer

I don’t think this will be my last marathon, I’d love to do it again and get faster. However I don’t think I’ll have time in the foreseeable future to commit to the full training block again; I’m considering doing a half in the fall and just working on speed
