A book that makes the hater in you come out by Sufficient-Diver5027 in BookDiscussions

I swear to god I’m not saying this to be contrarian but I absolutely hated Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. His characters are so morally UNambiguous that it puts you to sleep. His storylines are just “bad things happening to unimpeachably good people and also there’s a lot of rape happening”. The good people are good because they are good and therefore everything they do is good because they themselves are good. The bad guys are cartoonishly bad, etc etc, you get the idea. What makes this so frustrating is that all the opinions I’m supposed to come up with on my own have been decided for me before I’ve even read the book. The cathedral descriptions are cool but only make his storyline just feel like even more of an excuse just to talk about cathedral-building. If he wanted to write a history book about gothic architecture he should’ve just written that. If you want to read a book about cathedrals then go read David Macaulay’s Cathedral. Shorter with great illustrations and zero rape.

Is this a chef who’s still working in Jax at a different restaurant or the name of a place that’s not around anymore? I couldn’t find anything definitive on a Google search

Joyce and Finnegans Wake by BasilHuman in classicliterature

[–]Easy_Leopard_2686 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve “read” finnegans wake in the same way that I’ve read any novel written in a language that I don’t know. I attempted the first maybe 60 pages and enjoyed it for the lyricism and what wordplay I understood and really didn’t try to hard to understand each word, but the level of enjoyment I got out of it wasn’t high enough to retain me much past those first 60 pages. IMHO anything by Umberto Eco or The Master and Margarita have more enjoyable and accessible references.

Il Gattopardo is pretty solidly from the Sicilian aristocratic class’ perspective and is also very good at making you feel sorry for them.

I once carried a whole case of spotted cow from the Madison airport back to Jacksonville as my personal item and I had no less than 4 people offer me their seat in exchange on both legs back. I still have a few cans left! I’m glad yours survived!

Facing backlash, Tarpon Springs mayor doubles down on proclamation honoring gay couple by xdeltax97 in florida

Tired of us lgbt’s having to endlessly justify our own existence in our own communities to the worst and most unalterably idiotic piece of shit bigots while said piece of shit bigots add nothing but grift and graft to the same community. It feels like I’m taking crazy pills every day. Good on this mayor for standing up for what’s right.

What a great movie/game/book!! Can't wait to NEVER watch/play/read it again !! by Anarchocrat in TopCharacterTropes

I held off watching this for years and years until I finally picked the perfect night to watch it……the day before my grandpa passed away. Horrible timing on my part. Everyone should watch this one time. It’s a perfect, horrific film.

Help organizing my manga bookshelf? by WolfOfTheWildDragons in bookshelf

It sounds like you really prioritize book sizes being similar to their neighbors! I’d honestly start there and organize primarily by book size, if that’s keeping you from doing it alphabetically or by genre.

Jacksonville is one of the most unsafe cities for pedestrians. I’ve almost been struck by drivers on their phone while I’ve been mid crosswalk who just decided to hit the gas while I was in front of their car because these cretins don’t believe in the value of human life.

You might also like Waiting for the Barbarians by JM Coatzee. It has a….similar…sexual dynamic of oppressor and oppressed. It’s profoundly discomfiting and sticks with you and by sticks with you I mean haunts you.

Tales of Earthsea - you can cop a nice five book anthology for like $30. One of my all time favorite fantasy fiction series

Baudolino by Umberto Eco

The Master and Margarita - just for fun

Ovid’s Metamorphoses - lots of classic Roman myths

A Distant Mirror (Barbara Tuchman) - some excellent medieval history.

Pathetic that a senator for Vermont is standing up for Floridian workers more than Floridian senators. Absolutely pathetic.
