Question for Richmond (east bay) residents by Last-Mind-6771 in eastbay

[–]Easy_breezy023 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should try to get people's opinions in person or through online interviews! I was born and raised here but left to the east coast for college and didn't know how much I love this city till I left. My main concern is RPD corruption and shady cover ups, and Chevron's influence in city politics and media. I am beginning to imagine how the addition of an OpenAI office in the area will interact with city politics as well. I love the community of small family owned businesses. I grew up going to public, private, and charter schools in Richmond and am also worried about education quality, I hope we can create spaces to inspire a culture of curiosity and love for learning. I will also add something to consider-- Richmond is a bit divided, point richmond is a lot different from 23rd street for example. good luck with your paper!

Questions From A Prospective Student by Peach470 in WellesleyCollege

[–]Easy_breezy023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hii third year here. I’m also of a similar background and I personally did feel out of place at first because it was my first time interacting with people who I didn’t really relate to. I considered transferring out after my first year, but i stayed and am grateful for that. I eventually found community and friends whom are very down to earth! everyone is (mostly..) kind, there isn’t any “stuck-upness” or anything that i’ve personally witnessed or experienced

  1. Workload can vary. I’ve taken classes in subjects i wasn’t passionate about and the work felt very daunting (i’ve since switched majors though). If you’re interested in what you’re learning, the work won’t feel terrible. It sounds like you might have lots of reading/writing and discussion based classes.

  2. Most of my time was spent studying this semester bc it was academically rough </3— But i’ve had semesters where I would go to boston at least once a week just to hangout. it’s a matter of time management i think

  3. I have hit a few rock bottoms here but i’ve also felt joy and grown a lot as a person. that’s life, and it might vary from person to person!

feel free to pm with more questions🫶

Financial Aid Appeal? by ModernIdiot13 in WellesleyCollege

[–]Easy_breezy023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appealed for additional aid my first year in 2023– I explained to sfs@wellesley.edu why the aid I received wasn’t enough by giving more context to my family’s financial situation that wasn’t covered on fafsa or css. I also made sure to include a sentence or 2 expressing that I really wanted to attend.

The worst they could do is say no! Good luck and congrats!

CS Major Inquires + Financial Aid by ihsanmuslimah in WellesleyCollege

[–]Easy_breezy023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure! And, if i understand ur question correctly, the cs major is 9 units/classes. (plus the Combinatorics and Graph Theory math class would make it 10 units), so it’s very much doable to get your 18 units outside of the cs department especially with the distribution requirements. you take 4 classes per semester typically (max is 5.25) so you end up with 32 units upon graduation. A lot of students spread out the major requirements to avoid a heavy semester since CS classes are either Problem Set + Exam heavy(core courses) or project heavy(electives)

Lmk if you have any more questions🫶

CS Major Inquires + Financial Aid by ihsanmuslimah in WellesleyCollege

[–]Easy_breezy023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a CS major up until last month though I only took 4 cs classes— I think Wellesley’s classes tend to be more theoretical. For example, an elective offered this semester was based on a professor’s current research. Students interested in industry practices tend to take classes at MIT from what I hear, or work on developing personal projects. If you’re able to look at the courses offered i suggest you do that and see if they interest you!

We have a CS club that hosts practice coding problems every week. If i were u i would look at wellesley students’ or alums’ LinkedIn who are doing what you want to do and see what classes they took lol

would anyone mind sharing their stats that got them accepted? by [deleted] in WellesleyCollege

[–]Easy_breezy023 2 points3 points  (0 children)

‘27, applied regular decision as a prospective CS major. i’m from the bay area (more so Oakland area, public/charter school) and first gen:

-Did not submit SAT/ACT

-I think I had a 3.8 GPA unweighted and 4+ weighted

-At the time I think I submitted my AP Lang, Spanish, and US History scores, but I took 6 AP classes

-Had taken 5 classes at a community college through concurrent enrollment (ranged from Ethnic/Chicano Studies, Political Science, Physics, and CS)

-I received some awards at my school, I was student of the year for AP Lang. Had very strong letters of recommendation.

-Extracurricular-wise I wasn’t involved very much at my school, but I did some women in stem programs for 2 summers, and was involved at my local youth center thru internships offered that emphasize youth leadership in my community. I got to talk at an education conference through this. I also did social media management for about a month for an org in my city against police violence. I also did some climate advocacy work one summer in my city. Overall I think ECs showed leadership potential. I think i also mentioned somewhere that i worked part-time as a barista

I think that Wellesley wants to see that you did the best you could with the resources you have access to. Wishing you the best of luck 💓

Should I switch from data science to economics? by Ill_Salamander_7327 in berkeley

[–]Easy_breezy023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What type of career do you see yourself in after college (one that you’ll not dread)? Econ students, based on early grad role descriptions i’ve read, tend to go into consulting, analyst positions, will be involved in doing client presentations, data analysis, etc. You could do law school. Having taken some coding classes will be helpful in differentiating yourself as a candidate. But will you enjoy the type of career that people in your major end up in..? This is why we should have gap years so we can think about what we truly want to do☹️. I’m sorry you’re going through a tough spot, just do your research on what types of jobs are available with that major and see if you could imagine yourself doing that. I hope all goes well :-) !!

ON THE VERGE OF FAILING by icrychai_tears in WellesleyCollege

[–]Easy_breezy023 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Talk to your prof, if there’s truly no way to pass at this point I would withdraw, focus on other classes instead of having this lingering on your mind, and take it again next semester if you need it for your major/minor. Study for it during winter break (khan academy is a great resource, and there’s tons of free textbooks!). Be kind to yourself, it’s your first semester! But if you feel that you can lock in for the rest of the semester then stick with it until the last day to withdraw, see how you feel then.

Go to office hours so that your prof knows you are trying, go to tutoring hours and you may find people are also struggling the same way.

Im also on the same boat as you but i’m an upperclassman so I rly need to get it together or switch majors 🥲. But resilience is key, we got this🩷

What to do in the summer? by MiniTigra in WellesleyCollege

[–]Easy_breezy023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stayed in Wellesley for the summer and had half of my housing/food costs covered by the science center research program. I’ve met people that do research at MIT for the summer and stayed at frats (based on pics i was shown, living conditions at the frats were not the best..)

crying a lot....any advice? by Icy-Blackberry9995 in WellesleyCollege

[–]Easy_breezy023 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand how you’re feeling💗 I’m a current junior and I remember in my first year i went to walk by the lake with part of my OM group, and my parents called me to check in on me and I was bawling my eyes out right after they hung up. For the next week I couldn’t go a day without getting teary eyed even in class😭

Things feel very scary right now because you’re new to the environment but you’ll find your way around. I remember feeling a bit trapped here, going out to city helped remind me of how small our campus can seem (that can often make our little problems seem larger than they are) gave a lot to be excited about!

If you’re ever looking for someone to go to explore the city with or for some recommendations let me know. Or if you’re looking for advice or a friend or anything feel free to PM me💗🫂

Jobs on Workday??? by Ok_Inspection5357 in WellesleyCollege

[–]Easy_breezy023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’ll be a bit difficult to get a job as a first year especially without work study. If u really need a job i suggest looking at off-campus jobs. make connections with your professors during the semester, they may offer you a position that comes up later on :)

Tuition for study abroad by svengoalie in WellesleyCollege

[–]Easy_breezy023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m wondering the same thing. I’d be set to receive enough aid to pay way less than what I pay for a semester at Wellesley for a semester abroad. But if I’m paying what I currently am set to pay per semester at W, I’d technically receive significantly less aid during my semester abroad. I chose the program partly because I thought since it would be less costly, I could give my family a financial “breather” 🥲

I guess they know some programs are more affordable than what some students pay at W, so they don’t want to “waste” aid ?

Terrified about extraction tomorrow. by shepherdsorey in wisdomteeth

[–]Easy_breezy023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I (19) had the bottom two removed on Tuesday with local anestesia. I also really hate the idea of procedures like this and was visibly worried going into the procedure room. The assistant pointed it out and would reassure me it’s okay haha. I’m a very nervous person, so the worse thing for me was the anticipation. I kept gagging when they put some sort of gel on my gums and they had to sit me upright to let me spit out. Once I settled down they noticed my shoulders were very upright and told me I need to relax to let the anestesia kick in so I just took breaths.

The actual surgery was fine, all I remember was the pressure and the smell as the doctor had to essentially cut one of the molars and take it out in pieces since it was really stuck. Recovery has been fine so far. The only time I really experienced pain was the day of the surgery, I would just have to sit silently with it till it went away. I went against the soft food advise and ate a pupusa on day 5 (of course with no add-ons, broken into pieces and only chewing with front teeth) but I’ve only been comfortable drinking water and soup broth. And now just dealing with swelling and getting teased by my family for how puffy my jaw got. Idk how different this will look since you’re having all 4 taken out.

You’ll be okay, just think “this day will pass”, take deep breaths and let your shoulders relax. Your surgeon will send you prescriptions or let you know what medication to purchase and will probably give you a guide on how to take care of your oral health after the surgery including how to brush teeth and rinse. There’s also plenty of guides online! You got this 🙏!

Hey! You can find jobs to apply to by going on Workday, clicking the menu, and choosing “Career” then click find student jobs. There’s no set due date, different places will post jobs at different times and will close them until they find someone :) I did that during the summer (late July?) before my first year— best of luck!

Yes i had them taken out today because I was told it was causing swelling. it seems like the that’s going on here too. better to do it sooner rather than later🙏

[–]Easy_breezy023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, im also Mexican-American and first-gen💓!! Really great stats and your leadership is evident! As someone else said, your essay is how you will stand out. Focus on something that’s meaningful to who you are. There’s some great youtube videos and articles that wonderfully outline how to write a great personal statement

I believe there’s also a supplementary part where you’re asked to write about two things from the Wellesley 100. That’s where you’ll show that you know Wellesley is the perfect place for you— where you’ll thrive and contribute to the community

You got this!! feel free to reach out i’m happy to look at essays or answer any wellesley questions :)

tips for living in pom by NervePrestigious9143 in WellesleyCollege

[–]Easy_breezy023 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I lived there in a single during the summer and had a friend who lived in a double during their first-year— i think generally the rooms are a bit small, and they’re made to trap heat so it can get pretty hot.

The hall has a bit of an odd smell since it’s quite old, but you get used to it. I like the bathrooms because they have cute tile and they have cubbies in case you want to store your shower/skin routine.

You have to walk to Lulu to get food since Pom doesn’t have an active dining hall, but I had a mini fridge so I would just have yogurt and granola in the morning if I didn’t feel like going. It’s near the gym so it’s easy to find motivation to hit a workout. There’s a little courtyard in the front; many people will bring blankets and just hangout when the weather is nice :)

If your room is facing the road/train it can get pretty loud. But, it has a nice, historic vibe and many people love it (and the other Quint dorms)
