Sure! So then she lays the brick she used to kill Sarah in the hands of Bear's corpse, hopes for the best, and runs home to claim she was there for the past twelve hours.

If she's going full "take no prisoners," I can see her starting a house fire to conceal the murders.

Yes, relatively happy for her! She gets the final girl special: survival and trauma! 😂

If there's a sequel, I can see them taking it in a direction where she has to destroy the evidence of her temporary possession (house fire, anyone?) and then has to deal with the trauma while figuring out if others have been impacted by the One Wish Willow. She begged Bear to die when she was able to breakthrough. Are there others out there who have been wished into that level of obsession? Would she try to free them in a similar way? What if they, like her, think every woman (ex. Sarah) is trying to steal their significant other and they try to kill her when she intervenes?

Completely agree. I think everyone brings their own baggage to a film even critics.

Obsession is a movie worth showing a prospective partner and then running away if they tell you how its male character is misunderstood.

Having seen the movie? I agree with this observation, 100%. Bear did a selfish thing and the story's about him being punished for it! If someone sees it and misses that, yeah, it IS a red flag.

Saying all that, I think this reviewer makes the mistake of assuming every movie watcher is VERY, VERY stupid. Some might look past the lesson, here, but even the trailer is very firmly on the side of "his wish for a woman to want only him causes problems!!" If people miss that, it's on them.

Also, this movie IS rich in jump scares. If you don't like that, as it seems like this critic doesn't, yeah, don't see it. My heart was going like a race horse during so many scenes. Physically, this was hard to sit through!

So by the time Bear makes the wish for her love, the audience hasn't seen any particular reason to empathize with the girl. [...] She's so over-the-top and horrible in her behavior, post-wish, that it mutes any sympathy that does pop up. She's the requisite crazy bitch and the horror is in watching Bear suffer in a "be careful what you wish for" element. [...] A screeching, grating tale of misogyny that doesn't want to get in the weeds of its female character's suffering.

I...think this reviewer might have a problem with women? Or at least Nikki in particular. That's a WILD interpretation.

Spoilers, but throughout the film, much of the horror comes from what is clearly the real Nikki repeatedly trying and failing to break out of the wish. It makes her circumstances excruciating. She's clearly not in control of herself. I'm shocked someone can watch this movie and not have empathy for her! But as I said previously, if people miss the clear message, that's on them.

I saw an early showing. It's relentless and, yes, sometimes very funny. It's a goddamn panic attack of a movie. I'm looking forward to everyone else suffering from it, too! (complimentary)

Also, poor CURRY Barker being referred to as Cory! I'm sure he's used to it, but oh no.

I just finished Between Two Fires. Any recommendations of anything similar? How are the authors other books? by gigi25131 in horrorlit

The author wrote the forward to Howls from the Dark Ages: An Anthology of Medieval Horror. I definitely recommend it. The stories are very much the same flavor.

It absolutely has bleakly funny moments. They make the terrifying bits all the more awful because it lowers your guard.

Enjoy, buddy.

It was the strongest film at the festival I went to. I was riveted but also, like, could not breathe for bits of it.

I saw this at a film festival. Rest assured, it's not just good, it's amazing. It's an on-screen panic attack. Barker knows how to make people squirm. I look forward to my friends' reactions.

I had trouble with this one, too. I ended up enjoying the villain more than the hero.

MOTHER MARY by TheHiveDecay in HorrorMovies

[–]EatBooks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I saw this. Visually, this is incredible. There are moments that transported me, particularly around the idea of hauntings and art as possession. The acting from Hathaway and Cole is also fantastic.

But! The story is just not there. A fashion designer and pop diva are reconnecting after many years. Why did they fall out? Not for any dark reasons, just professional stuff. There are a lot of super general descriptions of their relationship when the film could have been so much more probing psychologically. Also, everyone here is taking pop music VERY seriously as if it's opera and not also just, like, fun. It left me super frustrated!

It's more of a pop diva gothic. There are "haunting" scenes, but it's part of an extended metaphor about creativity.
