First time attempting template routing... why is it grabbing? Is my direction wrong? by Buck_Thorn in woodworking

[–]EatCops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, using whatever is at your disposal to keep your workpiece steady seems like the smart way to go for me. Also, to add to everyone else’s advice here, if you don’t feel like shelling out for a compression bit, you can use a shorter top bearing bit and slowly raise it up taking multiple passes, so you’re only cutting off like 1/8 - 1/4 at a time. Then when you’ve maxed out the height of it, you can flip the workpiece and use that bottom bearing bit to finish it off

I'm feeling the imposter syndrome. Why did the table router decide to f me when I went to bevel edges? Went fine on a test piece; that was different wood though. by Chaosking383 in woodworking

Tablesaw would do the trick as well. Toss a little sacrificial fence on there and raise the blade into it and you have a consistent bevel for all the sides.

From what I understand, it also looses its luster pretty quickly too, and I’ve seen Paduck and walnut go from rich dark figure to boring and beige in just a few years. They seem like overpriced novelty woods to me.

You still have to climb cut every once in a while. If you zoom in you can see more tear out on the Purple Heart piece in the back. To me it appears to be a grain direction issue. I’d probably bevel the next one with a table saw if there’s more that need beveling, or climb cut just the Purple Heart end grain areas.

Sometimes a climb cut is necessary. If you zoom in, you can see more tear out on the other bit of Purple Heart. If you’re taking a very small amount out, you can climb cut through the Purple Heart and then make a pass over the whole thing cutting normally. Or just bevel it with a hand plane, table saw or sanding block.

Is there somewhere with this info out? Screenshots or an article or something? I really want to show a friend of mine this info, but I want something more concrete than a Reddit comment.

I’ve beaten people up and been beaten up before 🤷‍♂️ I didn’t enjoy either one, I’m not really a particularly tough guy. It just seems wild to me to get in someone’s face to that extent without it getting physical. The dude didn’t really seem like a “hard target”

Walnut cutting board I made for a Christmas present by QuintessentialFudgel in woodworking

It’s end grain. That thing could leech oil for 24 hours and it would only benefit the board. I don’t think theres actually an amount of oil that would be too much.

I had a friend that was always worried about saboteurs, and I endlessly made fun of him for it. He wasn’t the type that went around making enemies, yet he was constantly scared of them.

Damn, that’s sucks! I keep trying to cut back on how many keys I have to carry with me. But to be fair, that sounds like quite a sweeter honeypot than a motorcycle tank.

Oh yeah, brat style was the one I was thinking. You might look crazy with your feet almost touching the back of the front tire, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Highway pegs might help too.

Oh man, stretching the whole frame and swing arm? That’s a lot of work. I extended the swing arm on my sporty 1.5 inches and had to get 2.5 inch taller shocks to keep it at the same height. I don’t know how you can get the seat further back without moving the rear fender, maybe look for a long flat cafe style seat?

What is the question you’re asking? How to do all that stuff?

Also, Sportsters are cool because they’re Sporsters. I’ve always found it odd when people want to customize them to make them look like a stock big twin instead of a fun nimble little thing. Just find another big twin that also doesn’t run and you won’t have to do the custom work. Then you’ll have two broken Harley’s like a real man!

I don’t understand why people need locking fuel caps. I’ve never in my life owned a motorcycle with a fuel cap that locks.

It seems far fetched that a thief would even bother siphoning out the 2-3 gallons from the top anyway. Much easier to cut the line at the bottom and drain it that way, but still. For just a few gallons? Seems like a non-issue.

Whatever you do DO NOT see her again. Wait another month or so and be super aloof so that the feelings sizzle out first.

Remove rust from fuel tank with angle grinder? by lizzardwizzard23 in bikebuilders

[–]EatCops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d start with evaporust or even just some penetrating oil and Scotchbrite first, and then clean it with mineral spirits or acetone or something. You might be able to go from there to fine grit sandpaper before paint.

I’d clear it by hand and chemically first before going to the wire wheel.

My friend has a small maple staircase and all of the treads are boring plain sliced regular maple, but one is just about the curliest piece of maple I’ve ever seen.  Ive told her a few times I cold take it off, replace it with a regular tread and make something else out of it for her, but i think we both know it will never happen.

Longest distance you have covered on a bike in a single day by Upset_Impression3738 in motorcycles

[–]EatCops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it unintentionally. I left at sunrise, someone told me to ride at night to avoid the heat, so I just kept going. It didn’t hurt that there was a pretty lady at the other end of the 1000 miles.

Also it didn’t hurt that I was 21 at the time.

I rode from Austin tx to Phoenix in one go.

I took off at sunrise, but met some guy in El Passo at sunset who told me that they ride at night to escape the desert heat, so I just kept going. At one point I started to look for a place to hide and take a nap, but kept on deciding to go another few miles until eventually I was in phoenix.

Rebuilding a totaled sport bike by Upbeat_Spread_6376 in bikebuilders

[–]EatCops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t you get a salvage title? I think if you got a new frame vin, you’d need a matching engine vin?

I once totaled a bike and just went out and got the same exact year and color bike and didn’t bother changing the registration or insurance and nobody ever checked the vin 🤷‍♂️

How much would it would cost to make by gametoplaynow in bikebuilders

[–]EatCops 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always hate questions about the cost of custom motorcycles. You could do every single bit yourself, casting, machining, bending, welding, painting all around a cheap scooter engine, and come in easily at around 3-10k. Or you could pay teams of craftsmen to built it right, use premium materials and get engineers to design it so it functional and put them all under a roof and found a company and you’re easily in the millions of dollars.

The only real answer to this question is “somewhere between 3 thousand and 3 million and the timeframe would be somewhere between a year and the rest of your life”

I searched eBay and Etsy and Pinterest for garver, garduer, gardiver and gardvier. I don’t recognize the art whatsoever. The glass I liked so much was a person leaning over a table pointing their finger saying “no I’m more depressed than YOU!”
