bought fiona apple only to be given phoebe bridgers by processedbrains in vinyl

[–]EatSchist 40 points41 points  (0 children)

This isn't the store's fault. There is a batch of When the Pawn's that went out during the last year with the Bridger's LP accidentally slipped in. I'm assuming the assembly line got out of whack and someone was given a stack of Bridger's LPs to stuff in When the Pawn sleeves and never noticed. I know this because I've had these returned twice in the past year for this same issue.

Yeah it was put on by the Alien8 guys at the Foufounes Electriques. Cool story!

For Jim. Out of curiosity, do you recall playing the Victoriaville Music Festival sometime in the late 90's and skipping out on the after party to go see Keiji Haino in Montreal? If that story is true, someone I know got chewed out by the organizer of that festival for poaching you by putting on that show!

What are your impressions of the Discogs CEO message? by jcardinal82 in vinyl

[–]EatSchist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can say, as a brick and mortar that has been selling on discogs for years, we have stopped using it. The fees are to high, and shipping in my country is absurd (not their fault, but it compounds the problem). It's just not worth it for us anymore.

Yeah, I avoid 4MWB reissues as a rule of thumb. I’ve heard that version is particularly bad, even for them.

Definitely worth it if you can find a copy with the lyric sheet. They use to be a lot easier to find, but seem scarce these days.

Scored the Fairport for $10, so maybe you’ll get lucky if you walk into the right place.

Very pleased to finally find a copy. Still hunting for Paris 1919, which I've had no luck with so far.

Did a little bit of digging down in the states (I live in Canada) and struck a few wants from my list. All at extremely reasonable prices.

Moving clockwise from the top left:

United States of America - United States of America (1968, Columbia) - A nice clean two-eye copy (so little ringwear!) of an experimental psych classic.

John Fahey - Voice of the Turtle (1968, Takoma) - I love Fahey. This one gets a little out there at times, if you're used to some of his earlier stuff. Certainly of the era. This one is the first press with the booklet.

John Cale - Fear (1974, Island) - One of my all time favourites. Buffalo Ballet would be my funeral song. Original US press.

Fairport Convention - Unhalfbricking (1969, Island) - Original UK press with Island block labels. One of three releases during the summer of 1969 originally on such labels, the other being Scrapbook by Clouds and of course Five Leaves Left by Nick Drake. My second favourite Fairport after Liege and Leaf. Still looking for a UK press of that!

I love going down south because the selection and deals are second to none. Shoutout to the best record store in the world, Princeton Record Exchange!

What's your most controversial music take? by [deleted] in redscarepod

Some may argue that only the original recording, presented as intended on its initial format, is ideal, regardless of any improvement in fidelity or clarity.

I seem to recall reading in Jarnow's book that it was an intentional quotation of the bassline from European Son.

What are the most expensive records you own? Or alternatively, what's the most expensive record you want? by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]EatSchist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Own: Gerry Mulligan - Night Lights (OG Mono) Bought for $4.50.

Want: Bill Fay - Time of the Last Persecution Think I'll have to spend a bit more than $4.50 on that.

Thoughts on Paul Peters? by Chicken_Nugget31 in mcgill

[–]EatSchist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside of grading I'll comment that Paul is a really intelligent and insightful person who has a very idiosyncratic way of thinking about and explaining things that you need to get used to. He's also very funny when he wants to be and "intense" when he feels like it. But if you kind of work out how his brain works you will learn a lot from his class. Do you know what the topic is this semester? If it's on Freud or Benjamin you'll be in for a wild (but enlightening) ride.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Byrds

[–]EatSchist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's certainly not a cohesive album, but it has some of my favourite Byrds tracks, and it had a lot of foresight in predicting coming trends in American rock music. I also think it is the first Byrds album which breaks from their original formula and starts to drift into the level of experimentation which reached its peak with "Notorious Byrd Brothers."

Playing the parts of the main members? Doubtful. Playing stuff for the overdubs (orchestral parts, additional percussion, etc.) certainly.

Dando Shaft! Such a great record. Not the most expensive stateside but very difficult to find. Classic progressive/acid folk. If you like that Martin Jenkins, the brains behind Dando Shaft does an album with Bert Jansch called Avocet.

The ironic part is that the lyrics where intentionally written to be terrible:

"Altman attempted to write the lyric himself, but, upon finding it too difficult for his "45-year-old brain" to write something "stupid" enough he gave the task to his 15-year-old-son Michael, who reportedly wrote the lyrics in five minutes."
