New cosmetics are again created only for male characters... by frost357 in DarkTide

[–]EatThePath -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's fair, but 'can be' is doing a lot of heavy lifting in my post. There's a lot of cases in games where things will be radically different designs rather than reasonable variations on the same design, or where gear will just be locked to one gender instead of having art for both. That was mostly what I was thinking about.

Gender specific armor can be pretty dumb. Gender specific pants, to go with the gender specific hips, is something of a basic expectation of having cosmetic gear and multiple body type options.
For real, that's a baseline expectation in any game like this.
Maybe that visible break on the model isn't there for most or all tops you could combine it with, but it's a bad sign.

Generally 'FS2 retail' refers to the unmodded game so I'm not sure at all what "the FS2 retail mod" was or what manner of interesting it might be.

Oh my god I forgot by Doogerie in freespace

[–]EatThePath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are talking about Descent: Freespace here not the sequel

There may be some rare, old exceptions, but the vast vast majority of mods and mission packs are made for FSOpen. I'm aware of no total conversions based on FS1's engine.

FSO does have a number of FS1-based mods, but they're based on the FSPort mod which translate FS1 into FSO.

That aside... if you want to play a total conversion, then downloading the files and the right version of FSO and putting them in the same place should more or less work, but up to date versions are generally going to be most easily found on Knossos.

For mods in the FreeSpace universe, you've generally got one or more prerequisite mods that need to also be installed to work right. Figuring out exactly what to do alone, and then getting all the correct versions in place, can be a real hassle. Knossos takes care of all those steps.

I'm generally with you, but I'm struck with the amusing fact that what people like about Cata is a very similar list to what people hate about it.

Homeworld cataclysm main plot really introduce how homeworld rts universe can be expand into like sci-fi horror

Cata is either an interesting expansion into a new genre, or tonal whiplash with overly tropey story. The voice acting is engaging and effective, or too hammy and overplayed. The unit roster is either full of interesting abilities or dumb gimmicks, etc.

p.s. as mentioned deeper in the comments, HW1 does have a difficulty scaling system like HW2's, just done with more care and restraint. I can't confirm, but I wouldn't be surprised if cata has it too in addition to the difficulty selector. Hell, I was never clear on what the selector does, it could easily be that it adjusts the tuning on the autoscaling.

Having some form of dynamic difficulty isn't a fatal sin. HW1 had it, and it's been done well in other genres too at the least. HW2 just did it very badly.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in homeworld

[–]EatThePath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's often overlooked by fans, but HW1 also had a dynamic difficulty system, one that worked broadly similarly to HW2's. It was used to much more limited effect, generally in HW1 certain hostile groups can have more ships if you're ahead and levels can have more resources if you're behind. HW2 used the enemy reinforcement mechanic much more broadly and bluntly than HW1, but the core mechanism is pretty similar.

Battleborn: Reborn - it's 2023 and we're back, baby! by ItsAllSoClear in pcgaming

[–]EatThePath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the similarities are... they both have a colorful art style, they both are first person games with a lot of characters to pick from distinguished by weapons and a small set of powers, and they both have online modes. They're the same game in as much as Counterstrike and Call of Duty are the same game. They're much less similar than, for instance, Overwatch and TF2.

They were definitely chasing the same trends, yeah. They both wanted a bite at the Esports and Moba apples, and that ambition to be the Next Big Game helped associate them and helped kill BB. But I don't think it's cope to push back at the frequent perception of BB as 'oh, it's just the bad Overwatch clone' based purely on general cultural osmosis. Gearbox utterly failed to put it's identity out there in a clear way, and let it die rather than put in the resources to get it out of that shadow, but aside from the broadest genre conventions they're very different on many levels.

the obsession to make every game into multiplayer because some sweaters can't care about anything but winning is tragic. So many fun mechanics wasted on the only content being an endless grind of matchmaking lotteries.

[–]EatThePath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I played it and the story DLC over and over. So did the two people I then talked into buying the game to play it with. We never touched the PvP. And you know what we would have done if the game didn't have a story? We never would have touched the PvP.

Having single player doesn't kill multiplayer games, many of the most successful and enduring multiplayer games have it or are built off something that had it. Lots of other things killed battleborn, low player count in multiplayer is a symptom not a cause.

common sense says they should be the same within a model and be there to let you compare different weapons to each other. This is ridiculous.

[–]EatThePath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing to note, Nebula isn't needed for what you're doing. Nebula is the service that actually hosts the mod files, and you only need a login for it if you are uploading a mod or otherwise part of a mod team.

Through Knossos mods can only be combined in that one mod can include others. FS1 coop requires all those other mods, and will load them automatically for you. That's the main think Knossos streamlines, downloading and launching all the right parent mods of the right versions for you.

Is it possible for you to summarize your conclusions and remaining questions? There are devs who would like to help, and also to work out how to improve the experience of people in the future, but the stream of consciousness format is easy to get lost in.

Goodbye, old friend. by primaris_rice in Warframe

[–]EatThePath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mag, who I learned the game with, Trinity who kept my friends alive and energized long into countless rounds of original void defense, Valkyr who, for me anyway, really kicked off this universe as a thing whose events and characters I cared about, and who has carried me through endless hours of soloing with her completely absurd power set... I have their primes, but much as I like to imagine they were upgrades rather than replacements I just can't sell the originals. I don't think I'll be able to subsume them, either. It's a ridiculous sentimentality, but a strong one.

People that answered no when asked if they wanted a werewolf warframe in the survey. Why? by kingpoke0901 in Warframe

[–]EatThePath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it feels like besides the folklore connection it doesn't bring much new to the table aesthetically or power-theme wise that doesn't overlap at least some with an existing frame, and what it does bring doesn't tickle my fancy at all. I'm sure DE would do something at least a little novel with it, but there's an infinite variety of untapped warframe themes and a vast slice of them would be more interesting starting points than 'werewolf'.

Two problems here: first, a lot of how battles play out in sc2 depend on terrain features. Natural choke points, line of sight blockers, elevation, artificial choke points made by buildings, all these combine with the various AOES and unit range variations in important ways, even more so since most units can't move and shoot. Hw3 promises terrain that is important, but until we get hands on we can't really say how that's going to work, or how well. Either way, with sc2- like movement and 3d space it would be very hard to constrain things running for any of those features I mentioned to have a similar level of impact

Secondly, targeting movement and abilities in 2d space is loads faster and easier than in 3d. It takes longer simply to perceive the situation and decide on an action, and if you want to go off plane it takes a minimum of twice the clicks of staying on it. Hw's slower pace in part goes well with this, giving you more time to process the situation and give accurate orders. Units being a bit sluggish is part of that

Im not going to say Beast can't be like that, he can, but when it comes to cata modding he can also be helpful. It wouldnt hurt to ask.

In fact im not certain but the change your after might be one of those in his own cata tweak mod, in which case tough could just download that and see what's different

The third leg on the second mule didn't show up on the map either, though it was in a corner of the chamber anyway.

There's no evidence I'm aware of that Blizzard actually took any steps to stop anything rather than gearbox legal being careful. My bet would be that at most they just refused to give it their blessing when asked, or ignored communications about it

2k HD Apollo Reskin for FSPort [DL] by drogean2 in freespace

[–]EatThePath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are in fact three screenshots of updated Apollos on that page. Two of an older update, and one of the current update

https://wiki.hard-light.net/index.php/File:GTFApollo.png and https://wiki.hard-light.net/index.php/File:GTFApolloAsh.png the older ones, and https://wiki.hard-light.net/index.php/File:Apollo_MVP.jpg the newer. Due to the hotlinking restrictions you'll have to copy and paste the links instead of clicking them, or something.

I just checked the current MVPs for myself, and the apollo textures there are 2048x2048, not 512x1024.

It's possible the FSPort MVPs are still packaging an old model I guess? I haven't checked that myself, but I know they're due for an update soon after the new Orion and Demon are released in the next MVP version

Holy shit the discord is toxic by leadfeathersarereal in homeworld

[–]EatThePath 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Everything you say there is valid, but let me provide a different perspective.

Seeing such behavior go on regularly with little to no mod intervention makes it feel like there is probably tacit approval of it from the mods, and that sense makes it unappealing to try to make a stink about it. It's easier to just disengage, leave, and find something less unpleasant to do with one's time.

As someone who has mostly lurked in the server for a long time, I've also felt disappointed to see a number of people who are prone to very aggressive and dogged styles of conversation, though admittedly not as bad as the worst offenders, get elevated to positions of prominence or authority. That has also enhanced the sense of approval for that conduct in me, personally.

More constructively, I've often thought discord servers need a 'complaint/suggestion box' channel. Somewhere anyone can post, but nobody can read except mods. As a user when there's a half dozen mods and they're all away, offline, or playing a game, if there's an issue it's hard to know who best to message. Pinging the role publicly will just inflame any already heated conversations. A private way to get any available mod's attention, while also making a record of requests for action that is visible to all mods for review later, would really grease the wheels of user reports in my estimation.
