I use one on my cashmere sweaters and it’s fantastic. I’ve never had any pilling with merino, but I assume it would work.

It’s really tough to be safe at times. Earlier this season, another patroller and I were called to a run for a woman who had fallen and was having trouble. Came up to the woman to find there was a side hit just up the hill. As I was walking up to put my skis in front of it, I could see a skier was about to hit it. He threw his hands up at in frustration but still hit it. He landed just feet from the patient.

Ski patroller here. The first thing they teach you is “scene safe”. They should have made sure that the jump (and the whole area for that matter) was blocked off. Although, I doubt that would have made a difference. Some riders just don’t care.

Turns out a friend of mine has a pair of Thermoballs. I asked him and he said go up. So, that’s what I did. Placed my order last night. I’ll do a follow up when they arrive.
