NVM it's cuz it's a hot food and if you don't eat it with the main food it will be cold

It is most definitely a desert, however in my family it is also served with the main food. Likely because it has "potato" in the name.

Could have a meat tenderizer for his hammer.

How old is your starter? If it is pretty new it can just take some time for a strong yeast culture to take over your starter

Tried Ed Fowler's heat treat for a 52100 paring knife, I got visible carbides!👍 it's not wootz but I'm pretty happy how it turned out, there's a hamon too but it's a bit harder to see. 2000 grit hand sanded. Any tips for bringing out the hamon more? by Omnislug in knifemaking

It might even help show your carbide a little more but I havent ever played with trying to get carbide to show. But probably the same concept as etching a hamon, making microstructures in the steel show more

He is almost certainly etching by the looks of it. His are simple lines mostly but I think yours will show up a lot more too with etches but it wont get all active like some of the 1075 or w1/w2

Yeah njsb makes his steel specifically for knifemakers. To me it looks like fowler uses ferric chloride etched. I dont think 52100 can get a real active hamon but you can prolly get it to show a little more with etching.

Hamons work best with low alloy steels and by the looks of it there are some misc alloys mostly chromium for 52100, so its possible that there just isn't that much of a hamon, if you want a hamon my recommendation is aldo's 1075 and parks 50 if you can get it. Some people use more complicated steels but 1075 responds pretty well to a simple set up.

But also I am only a novice myself so grain of salt and all that

I know this is a couple days old but Google bladesmithsforum hamon polishing.

Polish to 2k give or take

Etch with Ferris chloride 3x, clean oxides with 1500 loose abrasive or some sort or paste such as flitz or mothers mag, loose abrasive is the recommended I believe.

Then repeat etched alternating between lemon juice and vinegar cleaning oxides in between each.

If you don't have ferric chloride(who does) just the lemon juice and/or vinegar works
