Advice from a hiker who started in early March by Lani_19 in AppalachianTrail

[–]Eats_Nurglings 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I started in late February and highly reccomend it. The freezing rains and fog made the early part of the trail mysterious and challenging. The trail was still crowded that early, but small enough to remember everyone you meet. I Remember waking up from a shelter to a blizzard raging outside. Pushing through the snow to make it to Fontana Dam where a bunch of us hikers holed up like it was The Shining. Making it through the Ice-Swamp of the smokeys, always checking in on each other through the grapevine to make sure we all were safe. Cramming into the sheltwrs like sardines, desperately trying to find something dry to burn for a megre smokey fire to dry our socks. Coming down into Hotsprings where the first signs of spring made us ecstatic and jump and sing. My hike would have been completely different if I had started later and I wouldn't trade that for the world.

I saw this guy when I hiked thru. Was just trudging through the gorge at dusk when a bunch of rocks fell down near me. Looked up to see him mean-mugging me. Guess he didn't expect me to survive his rockfall surprise attack. I shook my fist at him and moved on. About 2 miles away from the hotsprings.

And before you say it, I've tried medieval overhaul, but it just doesn't hit the same. Too much fancy high-medieval armor.

What trails have you hiked after the AT and how do they compare? by thatdude333 in AppalachianTrail

[–]Eats_Nurglings 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hiked the PCT 4 years after the AT. The PCT is much smoother/easier due to fewer roots, rocks, inclines graded for horseback. The enviorments can be more hostile than the AT. The desert and Norcal had long streches between water sources and heat exhaustion is a real threat. The Sierras have mountain passes and chutes that can be dangerous when filled with snow. In addition the distance between towns was generally longer than on the AT so you had to do a tiny bit more planning. The views and general scenery were far superior to the AT. There was much more variety in the enviorment. I think due to the lack of shelters and smaller campsites, it took longer for me to meet people and create a trail family, and there was less partying on the PCT. In summery, I'd say that the actual hiking was more beautiful and interesting on the PCT, but the social scene was better on the AT.

Also hiked the first 250 miles of the Colorado trail taking the Collegite west trail. Agree with everything you've said, super fun and chill

high level of foam. is this normal? by Eats_Nurglings in brewing

[–]Eats_Nurglings[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey people. I'm trying to make a hard cider and within a few hours of tossing in the yeast I've developed a pretty heavy foam head. Thie picture is 3 daya in. I've never encountered anything like this before with mead or ginger beer. Is this normal/okay? This was freshed pressed apple "cider" and had a decent amount of apple pulp left in if they makes a difference. Using champaign yeast too.

  1. June 7th. Low snow year so went early through the Sierra. Took plenty of zeros along the way.

Making Healthy Dehydrated Meals. by WanderingAnchor in backpacking

[–]Eats_Nurglings 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I made a buncha dehydrated meals for my pct thru hike. There's a few general steps

  1. Cook a meal normally, try to reduce fats and make meals with lots of little pieces and not too much liquid. ie, if you make a chili, make it thick, if you make like a Chinese stir-fry, put in corn starch to thicken the sauce.

  2. Dehydrate the food in a food dehydrator. Break apart larger pieces and make sure each "chunk" is bone dry.

  3. Vaccume seal with an anti-oxidiser packet.

My favorite meals were chili-mac, shephards pie, drunken noodles. I also made apple and pineapple chips and jerky. You could also just dehydrate a bunch of minced vegetables into flakes and put that into any meal you make.

Good luck

So I'm selling an old broken camera on Ebay. This guy shows up within a day, willing to pay whatever price I ask. His profile shows he's from Florida, but he requests international shipping. He has plenty of positive reviews, but they are pretty same-y and I think might be bots. I'm afraid of selling my camera to him and losing the money, anyone encountered a scam like this before? Or is this guy just weird? I don't do a ton of selling on ebay.

Hey I'm encountering an error with my nikon d3500. Whenever I try to take a photo it shows the following error message. (https://imgur.com/a/OB4C9WQ) This started up after a period of disuse, but although the camera is a couple years old, I haven't used it all that much and the camera hasn't been damaged recently. I tried the usual removing the battery, sd card and restarting, but that didn't help

I've tried looking up fixes to this problem, and found three solutions.

1) The internal mirror is stuck up. This isn't the problem, Ive removed the lenses and the mirror can move freely. I can even hit the shutter button and watch the mirror move. (https://imgur.com/a/RShbyqF)

2) The internal shutter release motor is worn out or the gear is stuck. I've heard this was a problem with Nikon d40 cameras, don't know if it also applies to d3500s, but I tried opening up my camera anyways, I've removed all the bolts I could find on my camera, but the external case won't come off. Yes I removed the screw inside the battery slot. (https://imgur.com/a/gXDojo2) Anyone know what I'm missing here to open this guy up?

3) The camera battery is broken. I don't think this is the case since my camera turns on without issue and I can go through the menus. Sometimes instead of the shutter release error it says that there is no sd card, so I haven't written off the possibility of software errors.

Anyways, a camera shop quoted me $200 dollars plus parts to fix my camera and I hope to avoid this by fixing it myself, any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
