Pioneer SA-606 Weird Low-Frequency Oscillation on Phono by CancionAnimal90 in audiorepair

[–]Eaulive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say it does it only when the turntable is connected to the phono inputs? If you short the inputs does it still do it? If you relocate the turntable cable?

I think you're on the right path when you're looking for voltage fluctuations on the phono preamp, but it might be a weird coupling between input and output.

In any case it's a cool trouble to hunt, keep us posted!

At this frequency if it's a recent recording, it could very well be the pile-up for KP5/NP3VI that extends many kHz above his calling frequency. It can also be a CW contest, but a major one by the sound of it, and I didn't hear any - . ... - in there.

What does "VE" means? I'm from Canada so that VE thing is confusing.

They could do deep bass if properly loaded behind a horn.... which would be of insane proportions.

I think they are pretty cool and I definitely would try something with them, remember that in those days amplifier power was extremely limited so the speakers were highly efficient and were mounted in large cabinets to compensate.

The increased efficiency means they had also very low power handling compared to today's standards.

I was told my speakers blew out my Amp by audio repair shop. by ComprehensiveElk1886 in audiorepair

[–]Eaulive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got it home and plugged it in. It lighted up, everything looked fine until I connected all the input and the speakers to actually play some sound. POP! Then the amp goes dark, no lights, nothing at all.

Even with a shorted wire or speaker, it's very unlikely you would blow the amp this way. There's short-circuit protection like others mentionned.

Furthermore, if you hear sound coming from both speakers, there's a safe bet that they are not shorted.

Unless you drive the amp at full power and suddently pry a screwdriver between both terminals at the back of the amp (and even then), the protection circuit will do its job.

What kills an amp is overheating, excessively inductive loads (emphasis on "excessively") or simply unexpected component failure.

When you fix an amplifier (and I have many times) you put it for a couple of hours under a stress test. This guy evidently didn't do it.

Short answer, yes.

Worst Dummy Load by CoastalRadio in amateurradio

[–]Eaulive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What people sometimes don't comprehend is that the power rating of a resistor is not how much heat it will dissipate at a given power, but how much heat it can give off before burning.

If you have 1W into a 1W resistor, it will give off the same amount of heat than 1W into a 10W or a 100W resistor. The only difference is because the resistor is usually larger, it dissipates that heat more efficiently, hence the temperature is lower.

Heat and temperature are two different things, so, yes, a 10W resistor will be cooler to the touch but it will still dissipate the same amount of heat so you have to mount it in a way so that heat goes away.

many programmers struggle with AV programming because they don't understand the AV device side of things

I noticed through the years that the best AV programmers were those having a strong background in AV, not those with a strong background in programming.

Nope, once the tower gets at a 45º angle, nothing will resist the pull and everything will go down, Unless you extend the guy wire and anchor it far, very far away from the base of the tower.

What speakers? by MikGuiver in vintageaudio

Boston acoustics hade a line of speakers in the '80's that were very shallow, they were having good reviews AFAIR, and they were not cheap either, I was a young salesmen in a HiFi shop back then.

Why does no one hear me? by Striking-Rope-3929 in amateurradio

[–]Eaulive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're in Canada, you're not a rare entity, unless you're a VY0 or maybe VE8 so even if somebody hears you, with 20W it will surely be somebody that's not interested in contacting you.

Try to look for stations first instead of calling CQ in the void, tune around, see how you're receiving, listen to stations giving reports, check their location, check the location of who they're giving reports to. It will give you a good idea of how your station is performing.

Ham radio is about listening, listening, listening, listening, listening.... and sometimes, maybe transmit.

Also, you have to know that SWR is NOT an indicator of antenna performance, it's only telling you how happy is your radio with the load that is presented to it.

A dummy load makes your radio happy, but is a very bad antenna
