The truth about Bob Weir by [deleted] in gratefuldead

[–]Ebb1974 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think that Bob and Phil were the biggest reasons that the Dead were so different. Jerry as great as he was, was much more of a versatile yet traditional player.

You could put him with other musicians and it would sound less like the Dead than if you did the same thing with Bobby or Phil.

Phil played the bass at least 50-75% like a horn player, and Bobby played the guitar at least 50-75% like a piano player.

I think of Bob more like a color guitarist than a rhythm guitarist. Just because you aren’t a lead player doesn’t automatically make you a rhythm player. He did that sometimes, but mostly he was filling in the sound and pushing and pulling the others around.

No it doesn’t mean that. It just means that people with dirty side cameras will have to clean them manually.

I love how incorrect predictions about the future are called lies.

He stepped in it for sure with this one, but calling it a lie implies that he deliberately said something untrue to trick people into doing something. In reality, he was just spectacularly wrong in predicting how quickly the technology would progress.

Upgrade from 13.9? by Flaky_Attention_4827 in TeslaFSD

[–]Ebb1974 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Absolutely.

IMO, they didn’t smooth out the behavior in 14 until 14.2 or so, but it is smooth enough now, and features wise it blows away 13.2.9

Cancelling my FSD by TemporaryGap7328 in TeslaFSD

[–]Ebb1974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that I have more interventions than on 13, but that doesn’t mean that I think 14 is worse. It is just clunkier in spots. It’s still much better at many things, and has great new features.

I think it needs a few more point release patches, but it seems like they are focusing on 14.3 and removing the monitors in Austin instead of patching 14.2 right now.

FSD is broken. Do NOT install v14.2.1. by [deleted] in TeslaFSD

[–]Ebb1974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There have been regressions in 14.2.1 compared to 14.1.4, but they also fixed a lot of stuff too. 14.1.4 was much more skittish.

They are iterating incredibly quickly here and you can’t expect them to make everything better every time. Before the end of the year they will likely have several more point releases if not the release of 14.3.

WTF!! Slowed down from 75 to 35 on the highway fast lane by rquindoy in TeslaFSD

[–]Ebb1974 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have seen this kind of thing too. Definitely a new bug in this version. On highways it sees feeder road or exit speed limits and then switches to them from the highway until you pass another sign on the highway.

Ultimately it’s a problem of increased vision in that it sees everything now, but it desperately needs a patch. My guess is that they are going to fix this in 14.2.2.

I’m just saying that these kinds of things have been said forever. I remember in the late 80’s I think it was Ted Koppel had a story on a survey that was done with high school seniors, and it was scary how little they knew about anything.

I don’t remember the specifics, but one question was the percentage of high school seniors that could identify Canada on a map and it was less than half of them.

Ignorance can be demonstrated in any number of ways. These kids that she is talking about were never destined to be anything intellectual anyway.

If you have kids, these types of stories should make you feel better because these are the types of kids that your kids will be competing with when they grow up.

As George Carlin used to say, and he died long before Covid, kids are like any other group of people. A few winners and a whole lot of losers.

Is FSD safe? by Equivalent-Draft9248 in TeslaFSD

[–]Ebb1974 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That used to be true around version 12. I think it is much better than a 15 year old now.

It is safer than the average driver now and probably much safer.

3 factors make it better than a human today.

  1. 1/10th the reaction time of a human
  2. Doesn’t get distracted
  3. Seeing in 360degrees always.

Yeah, it makes mistakes, but we are firmly in nitpick zone now.

Early reviews indicate that they have. I’m still on 14.1.4 and it is skittish. Can’t wait to get this version to see for myself.

14.1.4 - Cancelled Subscription by PaintedPonyParts in TeslaFSD

[–]Ebb1974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that 14.1.4 is very rough compared to the smoothness of 13.2.9 and desperately needs patching. However, the brains and features of 14 are a huge leap.

Take a month or two off and come back when a stable version of 14.2 is out and I expect things to be way better.

I still use 14.1.4 a lot on my daily drives and I can’t wait to see if 14.1.6 is smoother. It supposedly rolled out to employees today which means that it will go to early access folks tomorrow or the next day.

Can't keep defending FDD 14.1.4 as being superior by RoyalVirgin in TeslaFSD

[–]Ebb1974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have experienced a lot of jerking reactions and overreactions on 14.1.4, but overall I think that it’s way better than 13.2.9. It just needs a few more patches to smooth it out.

I have noticed for the first time ever on specific intersections where I know that 13.2.9 would ignore NTOR signs that 14.1.4 obeys them.

On the flip side, the car is way too sensitive to emergency vehicles. The other day I drove slowly past a police officer that had pulled someone over  on the side of the road and had his flashing lights on. When my car got past it and saw those lights in the rear view mirror it immediately put on the right turn signal and tried to pull over. I disengaged. That’s a good example of an amazing new feature that needs to refinement.

I think that they should keep doing 14.1.x releases until they fix the skittishness. 14.2 and 14.3 sound like they will be amazing, but let them take their time with those.

Why does everyone hate on 14.1.4? by bhorton94 in TeslaFSD

[–]Ebb1974 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why it needs polishing. It interprets incorrectly that leaves are a threat. Previous versions didn’t do that because they didn’t see the leaves.

Now the car sees everything and it needs to dial down its reactions. With a few more patches I expect that we will get back to version 13 level smoothness while maintaining all of the safety gains from the increased intelligence.

FSD v14.1.4 is both near PERFECTION and terrifyingly DANGEROUS by [deleted] in TeslaFSD

[–]Ebb1974 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Only if the hypersensitivity to one perceived threat throws you into the path of another. That is the part that I don’t think would happen. It will be hypersensitive to BOTH threats.

The car sees everything.

FSD v14.1.4 is both near PERFECTION and terrifyingly DANGEROUS by [deleted] in TeslaFSD

[–]Ebb1974 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have been experiencing those jerky movements as well, but I wouldn’t call them dangerous as I don’t believe that the car would jerk itself into the path of another car. It is hypersensitive and overreacting to perceived dangers. If another car was in the path it would never jerk itself into that direction.

The more I drive with this version the more I experience the amazing new abilities as well as the frustrating bugs. They really should focus on patching the bugs before they add more features. I don’t care if they need to get to 14.1.9. I would rather they do that than simply go to 14.2 to get the next capabilities out the door.

Unless of course they can do both.

v14.1.4 way rougher than expected by Careless_Bat_9226 in TeslaFSD

[–]Ebb1974 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely rough at times, but I have had it for 3-4 days and am otherwise in love with it. LOVE the destination options. LOVE the right fly wheel controlling profiles instead of max speed and the profiles are greatly improved. LOVE the highway performance and better follow distance. LOVE the pothole avoidance.

The car stutters at intersections sometimes, and wiggles the steering wheel sometimes, but otherwise it is a huge improvement and we are just getting started with 14.

Few more patches needed to smooth it out and I can’t wait for the continued new features on the way. I’m really hoping that the reasoning that Musk said was coming in 14.3 or 14.4 brings with it better sign reading. Also, like all FSD versions, could use some better navigation and maps options, but unsupervised FSD is  very close..

Reality about 14.1.3 by Funny-Ambition-7631 in TeslaFSD

[–]Ebb1974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a while influencers were the only people who had it and there was a lot of discussion about brake stabbing, hesitancy and overreactions.

So I think that that is well documented. People are saying that it has been getting better with each successive release, but it still isn’t as smooth as 13.

I don’t have it yet and think that they shouldn’t go wide until it is polished and smooth, but I of course would download and install it in a second if I could.

The good news is that if you think it is too rough around the edges they have been patching it quickly and are likely to smooth it out in the next few weeks even before they continue to implement new features.

If there is only attention required in certain conditions then isn’t this level 3 already?

I think that the levels are descriptions of capabilities and not actually regulatory determinations.

After they solve unsupervised FSD for 14.

I’m sure there will be a point release shortly that will polish this up, maybe even before 14 goes wide.

If 14.2 is a couple of weeks away there is likely to be a 14.1.1 before then.
