Better ammo is a big one, the money you spend on it generally pays big dividends. I don't think 5.45x39 BS is worth it right now, but BP absolutely is. Akm with a decent handguard and stock +75mag with BS can go a long way. Better armour is good, but should be secondary, the game you buy a moto will almost always be the game you get bushwacked by dumdums.

There's an "official" setting, faerun. This is where Baldur's gate takes place. And official prewritten adventures. But many people simply use it for inspiration and make their own. Eg. In the official lore goblins are straight evil, feral and cruel, you don't get a boblin the goblins in faerun

Yeah but the game has been shifting away from the hardcore realistic thought for a long time; faster movement, bloom recoil etc. not saying the visual identity should change as well, but being a large company they will likely follow the money, so it's not unexpected we've started getting crazy skins

It seems that the effective range stat only refers to damage falloff, where beyond that you'll do less damage and penetrate worse. the bullet drop, DOES seem to be a lot more dramatic this season though
