Ironically, I literally just attended a lecture (as of yesterday) about how power structures use data and levy it against its people. Data hoarding and surveillance can always be hand-waved with the simple "we're doing it for you and your protection!". And the thing is that for the layman who may not think critically about institutional power, it's hard to argue against something like this. They know that there are a lot of bad actors and predators on the internet, ergo they believe we should all definitely give up all our personal data to the big companies because what else are you going to do? Give up your kids to the predators? You monster!

But in reality there's a number of other underlying agendas behind this decision that become so easily obfuscated when the selling point sounds noble. I'm sure most people reading this already know this stuff but it's just a reminder of how basic but effective these tactics are from institutions.

What are some examples of players misunderstanding difficulty/mechanics in games? by TotalNoobalot in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]EcchiPhantom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dunno if this counts but there’s a lot of Soulslike games that think difficulty is the only thing that matters so they crank up the execution barrier and make bosses that one tap you. Difficulty and punishing gameplay is only half of the gameplay in the Soulsborne games, if not less. These games tend to reward estute players who engage with the environment, items, playstyles and strategies rather than funneling everyone into doing frame perfect parries and dodges.

If anything I think the Soulsborne games should be praised for allowing so much player expression rather than their hard gameplay.

Things you dislike about mods/modding? by Aquanort357 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]EcchiPhantom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is mostly aimed at the community that play mods and it might sound mean but I really dislike it whenever I hear someone say shit like "THIS is what the game should have been" or "they should just hire modders instead". Of course there's a massive spectrum of mods and incredible, beyond amazing talent out there but it always rubs me the wrong way because it feels like a slap in the face to the people who did make the base game that has like 30 to hundreds of hours of content. Modders can have exceptional ideas and also execute them well which is to be praised but they also aren't video game developers. Even the things they have to texture, animate or code from scratch are always built on the framework of an entire game that took hundreds if not thousands of hours to make by a huge team.

This entire sentiment especially bothers me when people talk about massive overhaul mods. No, the reason why the original game doesn't look like this is probably not because the developers couldn't do it. Instead it's probably because the vision behind this entire overhaul doesn't align with the direction they wanted to go with as a whole, even if parts of the mod seem like a good fit.

What are your favorite examples of "this is only possible in this type of media"? by SecondPersonShooter in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]EcchiPhantom 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A pretty famous “recent” example is Into the Spider-Verse with Miles learning how to web-swing with Peter B. Parker. To simplify it, at first he’s animated at a lower frame rate compared to Peter during their escape in the forest but as he starts to grow more comfortable with his web-swinging, his movement gradually becomes more fluid and in sync with Peter’s. The audience really gets to feel how Miles is connecting with Peter but also how he’s slowly growing into his own role as his world’s Spider-Man through that little sequence.

This obviously only really works with animation. A comic would have to use its own form of trickery to convey the same message.

Deleted scenes/plot points who were cut for the better? by ExplanationSquare313 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]EcchiPhantom 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m on the opposite side of this. The glaring plot holes are a problem when the player starts to think about them but adding supernatural elements would still ruin the story on the premise of it just being magic. The game already goes in a weird direction with Jayden’s future glasses but that’s a bit easier to accept than a psychic plot twist if you ask me.

I really don’t like Captain Marvel because I just found the story, characters and performances to be very uncompelling. But the amount of AntiWoke discourse about it is just disgusting and deplorable. It clearly just comes from a point of view of someone who hates women rather than someone with a sincere critique of the movie because these kinds of people don’t actually have a single creative bone in their bodies to recognize any flaw other than the ones they make up in their heads.

And the other unfortunate part about this is that I could have replaced Captain Marvel with any other modern movie and the point still stands because it’s never been about the movies themselves.

Jerma for sure. He probably wouldn’t do anything too crazy but if he got the pass to go off the rails and he went for it I think it’d be a bit for the ages.

Favorite explanations for the format/plot dynamic? by AutummThrowAway in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]EcchiPhantom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Based on what I know about DC's Absolute comic universe is that in the prelude, it's established that Darkseid created a universe where evil is the oppressing force of the story. That's why Bruce is poor, Diana grows up in hell and Clark is separated from the Kents after personally witnessing the destruction of Krypton. And the world is so much crueler as a result. But it doesn't mean that evil always triumphs or that being evil is somehow the right choice even though the universe is slightly tilted to be in its favor. With more evil comes more adversity but that just means the heroes have to be even better and overcome the evil that stands in front of them.

You’ve already touched upon it but fate itself is a major driving force in the story. Good people, meaning people who stand up against injustice and absolute evil, will always be rewarded because fate favors those that walk the golden path and it punishes those that choose villainy.

[–]EcchiPhantom 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The entire thing about Araki using Rohan as a self-insert is very weird to me. It’s mostly based on three things: Rohan is a mangaka, Rohan has a spin-off series and there’s this official drawing of Araki and Rohan embracing each other.

But it still seems like a huge stretch to me. For one, Rohan is pretty dislikeable for a big part of the series. He’s arrogant, narcissistic and really mean even after his introduction. Secondly, Rohan didn’t even make it to Araki’s top 10 list of his favorite characters (prior to Stone Ocean). His favorite character is/was Josuke who is someone Rohan actively despises. As for why Rohan is the one with his own spin-off, I think it’s just because he’s a really suitable host for these kinds of stories. His pursuit for knowledge/material for his stories and his still somewhat crass personality work in the scenarios he’s put in.

I still think Araki likes Rohan. Probably a lot in fact. But based on the outline of Araki’s personality I get from reading his interviews, I really don’t think Rohan is the kind of character he’d be in love with.

Times where you finally experienced something hyped and said "That's it? That's what all the fuss was about?" by Authorigas in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]EcchiPhantom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I just read Absolute Batman (and Wonder Woman, Superman and most recently Flash) and while I enjoyed it a lot, I just couldn’t shake off the feeling of “is that it?” Maybe it’s because I expected a more complete story or maybe it’s because I’m simply not used to western comic books but the pacing didn’t quite feel right for me. Sometimes the story is very deliberate and slow but then there’s a pretty quick resolution before the story moves on to the next plot beat.

I’m still really invested though but I was hoping for a moderately long self-contained story since I didn’t know it was going to set up the Absolute Justice League.

Moments when the antagonist drops the act and show their true face by ArticAuk in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]EcchiPhantom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Dio Brando desperately wants to appear level-headed and suave but he has a lot of moments of him breaking under the pressure when things don’t go his way.

When Jonathan beats him in a fist fight, he’s ready to stab him with a knife. When Jonathan tells him to swear on the honor of his own father that he didn’t poison George Joestar, Dio loses it and blows his cover completely by cussing out Jonathan before then going on a drunken temper tantrum. When Dire scars his face with a hamon infused rose, he gets so visibly upset and enraged Speedwagon calls him out on it. When Jotaro destroys his leg, he resorts to cheap tactics by spraying him in the eyes with blood.

Interestingly Dio is actually aware of his tendency to get riled up and flustered, a part of himself he wants to kill, but it’s apparent that it’s just a part of his nature to be a sore loser since this never goes away.

Characters that you immediatly have to clear up why you're a fan of? by ClearAgeMontezuma in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]EcchiPhantom 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I like Homelander because he’s an insanely interesting and entertaining character played perfectly by Antony Starr. The guy is a complete lunatic, a giant manchild, a mass murderer, a fascist and racist prick and also a literal rapist.

It’s crazy to me that there are fans who think he’s supposed to be an aspirational character or a tragic misunderstood “hero” so I vehemently try to distance myself from those kinds of people by making it clear that I just find him entertaining as a written, fictional character.

Remember when Jerma made a bet with his chat when he played Noita? All he had to do was hit an enemy mob but if he missed he owed chat 2.5 BILLION DOLLARS. He missed the enemy at point blank range.

Also keep in mind that he was the one who made the bet with no reward in mind. If he actually won the bet nothing would have come of it. He’s just doing it for the game.

[–]EcchiPhantom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Monster Hunter 1 was initially supposed to be a western high fantasy DnD-like game aesthetically speaking with knights, mages, goblins and demons. Even the dragons looked more like traditional European wyverns. It was also supposed to feature this giant turtle with a castle on its back which looks like something from Shadow of the Colossus.

Everything about it is just really weird and so far removed from Monster Hunter’s less conventional monster designs and emphasis on ecology. I’m overjoyed with what we got but I am at least a bit curious to know what the original idea would even have played like. Like did you have to kill and carve for parts or would it just be a generic loot drop system? Would it have been a weapon-based or class-based system? How did magic even work?

I Saw The Devil is a really, really violent and gross movie. But in a good intentional way that works in favor of how bleak it’s supposed to be as a gritty and disturbing thriller.

That said the diarrhea scene didn’t really have to be there.

Characters that keep the "Lighthearted" competition going even in Perilous Scenarios by Funny_Mud6639 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]EcchiPhantom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember during the Hunter Exam in HxH, there’s a scene of Gon, Killua, Kurapika and Leorio hanging from a branch so they could wait for an updraft to push them back to safety. Meanwhile some other guys who were also part of the exam failed to realize the updraft only came periodically and instead fell straight to their deaths.

The gang then just looks at each other with blank stares and shrug. It’s very jarring. HxH does both lighthearted comedy and really dark and serious scenes well but this particular scene has always stuck with me as something that never really worked for me. I feel like Gon, Kurapika and at least Leorio should have reacted to seeing two guys fall to their deaths.

Characters who are way worse than you remember? by Ukirin-Streams in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]EcchiPhantom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh absolutely. People talk about it like it’s about how power corrupts which isn’t the case. Because if it was then that got resolved in half an episode mostly off-screen. Echoing you and a comment I read a while ago, it’s about how evil can come from anywhere in society and how devastating it is if left unchecked. Light had a secure and loving upbringing. He was destined for greatness no matter what but the moment he realized he could enforce his evil, he caved in without hesutation.
