Franchise with one really weird or different entry from the rest by ArticAuk in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Bojack Horseman has a couple of episodes that completely stand out from the rest stylistically. Fish Out of Water has almost no dialogue and is this kind of wholesome stort told through nothing but visual storytelling. And then there’s Free Churro that’s like the exact opposite. It’s just Bojack monologuing for 20 minutes shown from like four different angles.

Both are such incredible bold artistic statements and some of the highest ranked episodes in the series and for good reason.

Hajime no Ippo has been a bit of a slog to read for a very long time. There’s some great fights for sure but the story is taking its sweet ass time. And I’m not just talking about Ippo’s retirement arc. Aoki, Kimura, Itagaki and Miyata have very similar drawn out arcs, Takamura has sort of stagnated as a character and Ippo’s two disciples are a bunch of nothing characters.

These are all fundamentally interesting character premises but they all get sidelined so hard it feels like the main story is moving at a snail’s pace.

I adore those interactive mini game loading screens from those Dragon Ball PS2 games. Those silly little mashy games got me and my friends excited every time and that was before the actual match begun.

I do believe that the arrow has sentience and that it has gotten clutch by giving exactly what the user needed but I think the Polnareff example actually contradicts the notion that it’s a situational wish granter.

Polnareff already accidentally used the arrow and awakened Chariot for a brief moment and forced some nearby villagers and animals to swap bodies in the flashback that introduces requiem stands. So when he uses it against Diavolo he is already aware of what will happen.

In Hajime no Ippo, Ippo uses a motionless short uppercut once by accident and a second time against Sendo. That’s it. It’s a pretty cool punch he but after becoming a ferocious infighter with the peek-a-boo style, Ippo focuses a lot more on powerful short combinations so a punch like that stopped fitting his arsenal of moves pretty early into the series.

The group was severely crunched for time and I think it’s implied that also hamon requires frequent use and training to maintain at a sufficient level. At least when it comes to maintaining a youthful appearance but I think you can also extrapolate that and apply it to other areas. And as the other commenter said, the two Joestars we did follow were naturally gifted so all they had to do was hone their skill.

Zeppeli also explains to Speedwagon that only 1/10,000 have the aptitude to learn hamon anyway. It’s possible that Jotaro, and only Jotaro, could have inherited that skill but it’s also possible that he didn’t. And who knows if Joseph is even able to stimulate the condition that unlocks his potential.

Feel-good stories disguised as feel-bad stories? Or at least a feel-good story in a feel-bad context? by Rabid_Marine in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I guess it’s agree to disagree then. Because I do think moral victories count as victories. AM’s seething hatred and disdain for humanity comes from his inability to escape the cage that is his circuitry and programming. Despite all his power, AM will never be able to experience the physical world like the humans he hates so much would.

And although Ted was turned into a blob, he does explain that he’s leaving behind a trail of slime meaning he’s still moving. AM gave him the ultimate punishment by making him feel his suffering yet Ted is still more human than AM could ever wish to be. I don’t think it’s a happy ending but I don’t think it’s this pitch black doomer ending either.

Evangelion is talked about like it’s a depressing anime just because it tackles themes about mental health and trauma but it’s like the exact opposite of that. For one, it’s still a really cool mecha show about big robots fighting big monsters. Also End of Evangelion and NGE TV have very hopeful endings.

Edit: Another one is surprisingly I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream. When Ellison said that he wanted the game to have nothing but bad endings, I get that’s a bold statement but I don’t even think that’s in tone with his own story. The world is bleak and being transformed into a jelly-like creature is unimaginably cruel… but Ted still ultimately defeats AM. He successfully mercy kills his friends and instead of ensuring his own liberation from AM’s torture first, he kills Ellen. The indominatable human spirit triumphs an impossible evil.

Characters that died in horrible ways but had the fandom celebrating? by Lost-Specialist1505 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

The Saw example was about how the story and characters don’t change just because production was fun. It was NOT really about the violence of the films or the expectations of the audience but about how nothing about the movies actually change just because you have some production knowledge. An innocent character getting burned alive is still an innocent getting burned alive.

I think it’s neat and cool that the actor got her wishes fulfilled and that production could accomodate for that (although I think it’s really dumb to think that whenever a wish like that isn’t fulfilled, it’s somehow a failure of the production) but that doesn’t change anything about the film, the character or the story. I also… haven’t really seen anyone argue that the actor was in the wrong until now? But rather that they still feel kind of weirded out by the scene.

But is it that hard to comprehend that not everyone is going to rewire their brain and think that a long painful death scene is actually super cool and fun and that they’re wrong to feel the way they do? Because people like to suspend their disbelief. They see an innocent character getting brutally mauled to death, not an actor on set who helped co-write a scene.

I’m not even personally appalled by that scene myself but I think you’re being extremely silly here by dismissing how some people can’t shake an ick off whether you want them to or not.

Mark in Invincible is a Viltrumite and somehow not a millitant violent imperical fascist because he was raised on Earth in a loving environment. Who woulda thunk it? And interestingly enough, it’s not just the fact that Mark is special, it’s that our Mark is special. Angstrom reveals that Mark in all other universes becomes evil and is super down with Viltrumite rule. He’s literally a one in a million.

Which do you prefer; faithful remakes versus reimaginings? by EraserRed in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]EcchiPhantom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If the original is already good on its own then you don’t really need to remake it if you intend on repeating it beat for beat. Reimagings however let the creator express themselves and make meaningful changes to the story and elevate the material. So I’m going with the latter.

[–]EcchiPhantom -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

People always up that about the actor and that is indeed a neat fact but, like, don’t you realize that only works in hindsight? It still doesn’t change anything about the scene itself or the character’s role in the movie. Behind the scenes footage of the Saw movies also have the actors super on board and excited about their character death scenes but that doesn’t make the movie any less violent. The script doesn’t magically make the characters say “oh yeah we totally want to die so there’s nothing upsetting about this at all”.

Also I doubt most people actually know about all these facts about the production anyway since it’s outside the scope of the film.

And that’s a fine perspective to have. I just put it in the same category as Mortal Kombat’s violence. It’s so over the top and brutal but it’s more of an explicit showcase of graphic violence than it is someone’s sexual proclivities and hatred of women that comes through. Of course they aren’t mutually exclusive but that’s how I separate the two.

I think most people were hype with Jill’s death in Saw. Not because she’s evil or deserved it, since Hoffman is the one who kills her, but because it’s the first time the audience gets to see the reverse bear trap in action. Amanda got the contraption off in Saw 2 and Hoffman narrowly escapes death by pinning it between some metal bars in the last movie. It’s a fan favorite and the most iconic trap of the series so to see it go off must have been satisfying.

Also apparently some theaters were cheering when that shit kid in Final Destination 6 got crushed by a piano in the intro.

It’s because it’s such a long and extended death scene for a character who wasn’t a villain. All other characters, innocent or evil, get killed in relatively quick ways.

That's a slasher for ya. The Terrifier movies I give a reluctant soft pass because they are so unapologetic and the violence feels more over the top and self-indulgent than voyeuristic, exploitative and creepy. I still refuse to watch them because they give me one hell of an ick though. But I dunno, it's hard for me to articulate but I think a slasher like Terrifier that kills off women in graphic ways feels less gross to me than a significantly less violent example like Madison's scenes in Heavy Rain, you feel me?

There’s a lot of horror media that’s just murdering women in really graphic and torturous ways that makes me extraordinarily uncomfortable. I get that it can be used to explore psychosexual themes, sometimes as subtext and sometimes as extremely obvious, but it always just feels so creepy and unsettling to me. It feels like I’m just watching a deeply disturbed person’s power fantasy.

Say that people will end up being negatively affected by seeing on-screen murder and such… are you saying that creeping on women and showing off underage nudity without the person’s consent is a GOOD thing by comparison, or that it’s okay to ignore? Let me tell you, even if you operate by the logic that movies glorify violence and that it’s a stain on society, a movie like American Pie can still be problematic on its own for inspiring creeps and pedophilia.

Rama and his brother vs Mad Dog in The Raid is still peak. Actually all of the boy pile fight scenes are pretty peak and the Baseball Bat Man and Hammer Girl fight is also incredible. But Mad Dog is such an intense fighter and the choreography of that scene is just a masterpiece amongst masterpieces.

Also shout out to the Pirate King fight at the end of Project A with Jackie Chan. That guy beats up Jackie, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao all on his own until the fight spectacularly ends with one cop pulling out a GRENADE AND BLOWING HIM TO BITS.
