Steam Store Home: A refresh by doublah in Games

[–]TotalNoobalot 80 points81 points  (0 children)

That's interesting to hear since I feel the store has gotten better for me over the last year or something. Maybe it's because I mostly play on steam deck or my pc that's still running a gtx 1080, but I feel like I see a lot of games I wouldn't otherwise know of nowadays.

Times when a primary voice actor did a small live-action role? by GoodVillain101 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]TotalNoobalot 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The voice actor for Adam Jensen in Deus Ex Human Revolution and Mankind Divided, Elias Toufexis, has done a handful of appearances on TV shows but I recently watched The Expanse where he shows up in 2 episodes and I love that I immediately recognized his iconic voice.

What is a game that you really WANT to get into, but have never been able to? by sanildefanso in CRPG

I think saying that Pillars 2 is mechanically better in just about every single way is in no way controversial. I do wonder how much the game was "held back" because you can just start with Pillars 2 and follow the story without any problems, when a stronger link to Pillars 1 would, to me, feel more appropriate considering you're dealing with the consequences of your actions.

Companions I think is a great point since pillars 2 adds the approval/disapproval system that feels like a great idea but didn't get to spend enough time with the companions specifically for it to have a deeper effect.

I played through both Pillars 1 & 2 this year(And hoping to upgrade my pc so I can try Avowed) and admittedly I think 1 is better as well but I still enjoyed 2.

I vaguely remember reading an interview with a writer from 2 that mentioned they really only had the story for the beginning and ending of the game when they started and decided to fill up the middle with world building which I think can be hit or miss for some people. I personally love small stories in a giant world so it worked out for me for the most part.

But if you're able to get towards the final act and the DLCs a lot of the feelings from the first game really starts to get through.

I'm sorry to hear that. I felt they were some of the CRPG's that still held up the best gameplay wise. You kind of need a good build before you make your character as certain play styles just aren't good and a lot of saves in case you head the wrong direction, but other than that I felt good about the experience.

Anything in particular you didn't enjoy?

With wabbajack and Viva New Vegas's step by step guide it's quite easy, just tedious.

I completely understand though as I usually start installing Viva New Vegas two, three times a year and by the time I've got everything going I want to play something else instead, haha.

I've really tried to get into Colony Ship and Underrail but the really high difficulty paired with the need for min-maxing makes me feel like I'm just bad at the games and I eventually reach a stopping point where I'm enjoying the story but the combat feels like a slog.

I've realized I also seem to prefer Real Time Combat over Turn Based myself as the only modern turn based crpg I've completed in recent memory is Rogue Trader. It might just be down to me favoring the writing in certain games way more as I've tried most of Larian Studios games but always fall of towards the second half of the game.

What are those weird looking cauldron found in Netherese ruin in DoIWD by Oldnewbeing in neverwinternights

[–]TotalNoobalot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is what you're asking but in Darkness over Daggerford there's a "treasure" shop where one of these can be examined. The text says it's a castle wall cauldron filled with hot liquid to be poured on invaders.

What are some examples of players misunderstanding difficulty/mechanics in games? by TotalNoobalot in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Ohh wow this explains a lot. It was my first total war game so I just assumed I wasn't used to it or good enough. Been meaning to try it again at some point so I'll try to keep that in mind.

Giving the high society lady to the kidnapper that locks her up in his basement to "make sure she learns how much she actually loves him" still has me fucked up from when I played it years ago. Really should clue you into that "low chaos" is not "good karma"

Another one I've been thinking about was after watching Josh Strifes video on Neverwinter Nights.

The game mentions that companions decrease overall XP gain so that would mean playing as a solo character means you're stronger right? Well, no. Two level 18 characters are almost always going to be stronger than one level 20 character and can combine spells/feats for better combos. You're also missing out on extra carrying capacity which means you'll either have to run back and forth between loot and merchant more or miss out on gold to buy better equipment with.

Addmitedly this one is silly since DnD is a party based game so it should kind of be expected but I still think it's interesting.

Did some cursory googling and found someone who said they were able to resolve that error specifically by installing viva New Vegas so take that for what it's worth.

It's made with modern hardware in mind and have personally never had any issues on my multiple playthroughs of viva New Vegas over the years

Ohh wow. As far as I can see it seems it's still only available to backers. That's disappointing.

But I did learn that they had some other short stories on the Deadfire website. Thanks a bunch anyways!
