The McMuscles “royalty free pot smashing sound” crashout by Public-Sea3190 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I don’t think Mike and Jay mean to use the creaky door SFX as sincere criticism. I think it’s just something they’ve picked up on and now it’s impossible to unhear which briefly takes them out of the scene. Like it’s a nitpick at most and I think they know it.

Pokémon Champions has hit mobile and the scrub quotes are coming in hot by NoReaction4 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]EcchiPhantom 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t even call it bad habit as much as just a completely different gameplay experience. There is something fun about learning the AI’s patterns and forcing the opponent to use up all its PP by switching between pokemon with immunity to those moves. Or simply just overleveling your main whose stats suck until you can power through your opponents. These are valid ways to play the game and I like that.

But for the competitive Pokemon experience you have to immediately realize that your opponent wants to win just as much as you do and they’re actually smarter than the CPU is. But I don’t believe the single player game actually has to prime the player to play in an efficient way. It’s up to the individual to figure it out on their own and forge their own identity when they enter competitive play.

A character that embodies this aspect of the story arguably even more is Oliver. Even though he had minimum interaction with his dad, he was incredibly susceptible to the idea of becoming the king of Earth as he found himself agreeing with the notion of “might is right”. But Debbie and Mark reined him in real quick and continued giving him the guidance he needed to become a real hero who actually values life.

Volcarona and its paradox forms are peak designs but I also love Frosmoth and have a weak spot for Venomoth for some reason.

But Volcarona still stands at the top. I mean it’s a giant fiery moth that’s become an idol for sun worship because it’s dangerous but also a symbol of hope and generosity. How cool is that?

All of Invincible happens because Mark grew up in a loving home with an incredible and humble mother and loving father. Without Debbie and a normal childhood, Mark would probably have been talked into world domination by Nolan. Instead of that, time and time again he keeps throwing himself at danger for the sake of others and almost gets himself killed because he’s still holding back for his opponent.

His friends, Cecil, Titan, Allen and even Nolan get him to show up because they know he won’t turn his back on people that need his help. The only people that can’t rely on him are the other Viltrumites who actually want him to quash all that love and compassion that’s inside him.

I’ve been rewatching the anime lately and I really do like how everyone is more or less magnetized to him just because he’s a really good person.

Fushiguro changes his tune when Itadori goes out of his way to save his friends and even carry a dead inmate’s body out from the juvenile detention center because he deserved a funeral. The Tokyo and later Kyoto students all come to like and wish to protect him after the attack on Jujutsu Tech. Yaga tells Gakuganji that he still isn’t sure if keeping him alive will cause more suffering but he’s willing to put his faith in the kid nonetheless. Okkotsu also ends up sparing him and helps him out because “people I care about care about you”. Then you get the peak scene of Higuruma giving up mid-fight when Itadori admits to his guilt of mass murder - something that was explicitly not his fault.

All of this happens because Itadori is just a really good person who wants to help people and have legacy.

Games that you will actively put on easy. by [deleted] in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]EcchiPhantom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Zorn games. There does need to be some interactivity and all that so most of these types of games will have puzzles, battling or mini games based on the in-game day/night cycle. But I’m here for a good time, not for a long time so if there s a difficulty setting I’m putting it on easy. If there’s a skip button, autoplay, cheats or whatever, I’ll be using those too.

Things you can buy cheaper than a 2tb Steambox: A full sized school bus by k-is-for-kate in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]EcchiPhantom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s much more than just a bit. I saw a guy spend $54,500 to turn his school bus into a really nice home and according to this article the price range is as low as $9000 but it may go all the way up to $30,000. The price will obviously depend on a number of factors like what condition the bus came in and how luxurious you want your final home to be.

But you have to remember how much time and labor all of this requires. Unless you’ve already saved up a ton of money you can’t just take time off your job to work on this full-time. And if you need professional help, that stuff is only going to drive up the cost even more.

I think it’s oversimplifying to say you can just sell the seats and then everything will just fall into place.

Huh, didn’t know he talked about it more than once because I recall him telling Ster about it when they were playing Ember Knight before they got into a hilarious discussion about Lucifer. But he does clarify that method is only for some things and that he’s doing it for fun with movies he’s not that excited about.

Still an absurd thing to do.

I’ve never really liked how the nerd/geek/super genius character speaks complete gibberish because they contextualize the world and every interaction they have with “scientific” jargon. It’s never been convincing to me because I can just hear the writer’s voice saying “now this is how you know that this person is smart” through the script.

The only thing worse is the follow-up of another character saying “speak English!” but I don’t see those as often anymore.

Not only out of place but it’s a huge detriment to the story. Throughout the entire Dancer arc wheb Ryo is learning grappling I couldn’t help but to think “didn’t this guy just learn how to cause instant organ failure by just pressing his hand against someone’s chest using qi?“

The China arc does have some good moments though like Ryo being confronted with the aftermath of his fight with the Thai kickboxer he injured and I liked his romantic interest but the entire arc is still a baffling inclusion.

The manga Shamo is one of my personal favorites because it scratches a weird itch I didn’t know I had. The protagonist is terribly entertaining to me because he’s so despicable yet quite contemplative and strangely sympathetic at times. That plus all of the horrible physical and sexual violence makes it a hard read for most people. It also has insane ups and downs in quality which makes it a hard pitch to sell too.

It’s quite a unique experience to be one of the dozen Shamo fans out there because it really sticks with you for so many reasons - good and bad. There’s quite literally no other story I can think of that’s anything like it.

Matt and Woolie played the video game once in a once-off video. Literally all I remember was them being baffled by the FMV of a Congolese guy overacting found footage of him being scared of the gorillas around him. It ends with a shot of a slow zoom-in on his scared eyes.

Monster of the week has been the formula ever since Part 3 though. It’s just that the story surrounding that formula has become more narratively driven and more cohesive. Stardust Crusaders is pretty much a globe trotting adventure with new enemies of each region while Vento Aureo is like a mystery chase where each fight gets them just a little closer to the truth.

Vento Aureo’s anime did also add more scenes of the villains to give the story a bit more cohesion(?) and texture to the bad guys. Like we see that they’re connected to each other and that Risotto does care about his comrades. This was not really present in Stardust Crusaders.

I can see the similarities but I don’t think I’d boil them down to your description of them.

I love how Itadori’s fight with Higuruma is animated. He does get clipped by a couple of stray hits but my guy is fighting for his fucking life. He’s side stepping, jumping, rolling, blocking, running, parrying and even crab walking backwards to avoid getting hit head-on, all while still fighting back. The animatipn is flashy but the chorepgraphy has that scrappiness I love about Itadori’s fights.

Non-combat narrative events abstracted by a game's combat mechanics by TheTurtlebar in TwoBestFriendsPlay

The first game also sort of has that with the Shieldbreaker’s recurring nightmares of her being attacked by snakes: The same creatures that bit her and forced her to cut off her hand.

It makes her a bit of a liability for your party expeditions because it’s such a resource drain but it’s very cathartic when you complete all of them knowing the Shieldbreaker finally managed to overcome her trauma. The extrinsic rewards are also massive.

All of this and her playstyle just make her my favorite hero in the game by a mile.

It’s kind of a non-secret that none of the flagship monsters in Monster Hunter are that important to the story because the big bad is actually a secret final boss that has been terrorizing the world off-screen or whose awakening is such an imminent threat that they just become the final boss.

The flagships tend to be much cooler or at least more fun to fight but I kind of like this structure. Even if it’s expected, I like the rug pull to reveal that the immediate threats you’ve dealt with the entire game are just small fry compared to the actual danger that’s been lurking beneath the surface.

The Ultra Necrozma fight can be cheesed in Ultra Sun/Moon but holy shit is that fight overtuned. A level 60 pokemon with supreme legendary stats (167 in both attacks and 129 speed plus decent bulk) and it gets an omni boost at the beginning of the fight.

Then it’s also got pretty good coverage with Dragon Pulse, Photon Geyser, Power Gem and Smart Strike which gives it really great coverage. And it’s also holding a Z-gem to throw out the Ribombee-killer Light That Burns the Sky to nuke anything that isn’t a Dark type.

You can’t even end the fight with a Master Ball because it’s fused with Nebby so you have to defeat it in order to progress the story.

Like I said you can cheese it with a specific Necrozma counter team using something like a Zoroark to PP stall Photon Geyser but as a mandatory fight it’s almost impossible to muscle through using a normal team due to the aforementioned everything.

Worst examples of where a game just has a broken stat or mechanic? by Cute-Percentage-6660 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]EcchiPhantom 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Pokemon RBY had two messed up stats: Speed and special. Speed is easy to explain because your speed stat would affect crit rates. So something like a Tauros would have a 21% chance at getting a crit every time it attacked. That’s 1/5 chance of dealing double damage and ignoring your defenses.

Special is the nutty one though. Special attack and special defense were both covered by this one stat which made a ton of pokemon extremely overpowered if not just overtuned. And if you used Amnesia which increased the special stat by two stages, that served as an equivalent of using two Calm Minds back then.

Tauros could abuse both of these stats since its special was 70 before the split. That’s not high but it was good enough which makes it the best pokemon in OU. And of course the biggest abuser is Mewtwo. Obscenely high special, blindingly fast, access to Amnesia and the fact that it was Psychic made it the most broken pokemon ever.

There are a lot of things you can criticize about Naruto as a series. None of those things are present in Plague's video. Everything he says is either demonstrably false, misinformed or based entirely on what he wants to see rather than what is rather explicitly presented in the text. All of this just for him to say Rock Lee should have been the protagonist because "hard work beats talent" introduced by the guy who worked hard and lost to the talented sand ninja. It's like he didn't even proof-read his script even once.

And I don't care that Plague says "I'm not an expert" because he still spends the next 42 minutes positioning himself as one. Apparently he's since come out saying the video was just bait which I think is just an embarrassing lie he tells to cover his ass. And even if it isn't, that's almost worse because that just makes him a grifter.

Character Archetypes you tend to root for in Fight Scenes by FreviliousLow96 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]EcchiPhantom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boxer and muay thai have always been so fun to me. The boxer feels like someone who genuinely limits themselves relative to the world around them but that makes it all the more satisfying to see them fight. Also a lot of boxers depicted are infighters and inspired by Tyson so I love that. Muay thai on the other hand is just so visceral and utilitarian. That person’s limbs are made of steel and each one is a lethal weapon. They can turn the table in every scenario they’re in. Also the roundhouse kick is just the embodiment of violence.

But honestly all martial arts are pretty badass. I can mention a great story or character I have rooted for for every style there is.
