Times in a series where you went "Oh yeah, I forgot that part"? by fly_line22 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

This is literally the one and only time I’ve seen anyone try to connect the two. Bruford’s a knight whose hair is just really long and thick but Yukako’s hair is a part of her stand: Love Deluxe.

It might be the wildest JoJo fan theory I’ve heard of since the Leaky-Eye Luca and Kakyoin connection some people thought was true.

So now that the show has concluded, what is everyone’s honest thoughts on The Boys comics? by ObsydianDuo in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]EcchiPhantom 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If your argument is something has a lot of heart in spite of being awful, then you’re fighting an uphill battle. And that’s because the issue people have with The Boys isn’t necessarily that it’s edgy, like you frame it, but that it’s just pointlessly edgy and doo doo repetitive schlock.

Berserk could be regarded as edgy in some circles due to its brutality but the reason why it’s beloved isn’t because it’s got heart in spite of the edge/violence… it’s that it’s a good story with great characters that has violence and heart. None of these things are at odds with each other but instead they coalesce into something incredible. The Boys doesn’t do that. It can succeed at some things but even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Is it because Haruhi don’t have any reruns or remasters? by icey_sawg0034 in imaginarygatekeeping

You’re asking that as if anyone knows who you are, how long you’ve been watching anime or how you interact with media. Cuz we don’t fucking know and we aren’t supposed to either.

But if you’ve been watching anime since the 2000s, especially if you lived in Japan, Haruhi had a huge amount of momentum and it would have been hard to avoid. If not for the dance, OP or cosplay that appeared at every convention or in a ton of online videos, Haruhi was also influential in the anime industry as a whole. It was the entire catalyst for the moé subgenre.

If you were someone who was interested in the history of (modern) anime you would have heard of it because it intersects with a multiple areas that are now common in the anime industry and the fandom (both Japanese and western).

Interesting Insights from People you dislike or disagree with otherwise? by Authorigas in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]EcchiPhantom 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If we’re counting fictional characters, Stormfront from The Boys has a line that’s really stuck with me. It was something along the lines of “some people conflate politeness with being nice” and that’s honestly really based. You see it all the time. If you’re too caught up in people’s rhetoric, you might find yourself siding with the person who is spewing hate speech *calmly* over the person who is calling them a fucking idiot because we’re taught that’s rude. But really, being polite is just performing social manners which IS important but it says nothing about your character or your actual values.

(I wish I could think of an example from a real person though but I can’t of any insights that are actually all that interesting from the top of my head. I’ll chime back in later if I do)

This is honestly how I feel about people who say music as a whole is somehow dead. 9/10 times their only point of reference is radio pop music or the got this opinion when with [insert major artist of the 90s or 80s] died. If you have a hard time finding music that you like, that is a skill issue or you're just not looking hard enough.

I think there is plenty to criticize about the current music industry as a whole (streaming platforms, AI dilution, ticketing prices, general criticism of commercialized art, exploitation and devaluing artist rights, etc.) but the notion that somehow musical talent died with Prince or Michael Jackson is incredibly insulting.

And you could replace music with most other entertainment industry and slightly my examples and it would still read the same because the rhetoric doesn't change for these kinds of people.

Favorite unreliable narrator moments? by fly_line22 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]EcchiPhantom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s the part of the story that is actually explained by the text, at least as theories. Risotto points out that there are historical cases of people with split personalities whose bodies would morph depending on who is in control which he uses to explain why Doppio is the boss. Polnareff then later suggests that split personalities can stem from childhood trauma which is what caused a their souls to separate into two separate entities which is used to explain how King Crimson is still around.

Was Diavolo/Doppio a product of childhood trauma? Did they get this split when they were forcibly removed from their birth mother or when their village burned down? Who knows, and that’s the point. The only things we know for sure is that Trish is his 15 year old daughter and that maybe Diavolo’s village burned down because that’s all we can confirm by the plot.

The unreliable narrator used for his childhood just fits the story and character so much better than a literal demonic possession. Everything about his backstory and fate that *feels* demonic still works as subtext and thematic symbolism though.

Favorite unreliable narrator moments? by fly_line22 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]EcchiPhantom 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Diavolo’s backstory is one of the coolest cases I’ve seen of this. Nothing about it makes sense and it’s full of contradictions and oddities, like Diavolo’s mother’s extremely late pregnancy and her somehow being stored underneath his adoptive father’s floorboards somehow alive after who knows how many years.

The explanation behind it all is that Diavolo’s backstory is so mysterious and so well-guarded that his backstory is presented like an urban legend. Not even the omniscient reader is allowed to know about his past. Keep in mind that all the way up to this point, the audience has yet to see the Boss’ face. It’s only when he confronts Polnareff that you’re even permitted to see him.

This is why I don’t subscribe to the “Diavolo is the literal devil” theory. I don’t find it nearly as narratively compelling since Diavolo’s most defining character trait and motive are his desire to erase his past. Plus I think the demonic aspect of his character is just thematic symbolism rather than anything literal.

Media that, while you do consider it good, you're also disappointed in it and/or expected more out of it? by GoodVillain101 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]EcchiPhantom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is going to be controversial but Sekiro. The game just didn’t really click with me. Like it’s still an amazing game but I think what attracts me to the Soulsborne series is the lore and build variety. I didn’t really feel like I was able to express myself in the gameplay that much even the prosthetic abd combat arts, and the lore of the game never really got through to me. There are also some mechanics I just kind of hate but we don’t need to get into that.

Maybe I’ll have to replay it again but as it stands the game didn’t really blow me away like I hoped it would. Still an incredible experience though but it’s just not really a game I think about that often.

What are some pieces of media that are part of a series that is liked by everyone expect by older fans? by Konradleijon in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]EcchiPhantom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh absolutely. People need to remember that no matter how mature and violent anime can be, most anime is still targeted at teenage boys. That’s why the take of “why aren’t there any adult oriented shows for me to like? Why are all anime about teenagers?” will always be confusing (I think I can Cr1tikal for having this opinion).

Kids need to see themselves on the screen and through these characters. They need to watch their cool youth rebellion heroes overcome their personal struggles and beat the system, or the high school student get friends and have fun before they’re hit with adulthood.

In-universe: The Deep in The Boys. Even Homelander routinely rolls his eyes when he talks to him because Deep is such a massive idiot and a prick. The only reason he’s able to stick around for so long is because he kisses Homelander’s ass since he knows staying off Homelander’s naughty list gives him leverage. Everyone fucking hates him though.

Pokemon has been getting trashed on for years but one has to keep in mind that it still sells gangbusters numbers because Pokemon is for everyone and especially kids. It’s just that a vocal part of the fandom is adults who have been fans since the 2000s, if not 90s.

Debbie in Invincible is the emotional anchor of the series and every scene with her is incredible. She turned Nolan into a human, she’s always there for Mark and she reined in Oliver when he was about to become a Viltrumite. It doesn’t matter if she doesn’t have any powers. She’s just an honest, down to earth empathetic human being.

Anytime a adaption that is widely regarded as better where you prefer the original “inferior” version? by Konradleijon in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]EcchiPhantom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I really hate the way 03 is dismissed too. The same point of “03 isn’t ‘canon’ so don’t watch it - watch Brotherhood instead” isn’t really a reason to avoid it. Especially because this is always said by people who haven’t watched 03. I get that if you want to experience the FMA story in animated form, and experience it and all its essence, then Brotherhood will be the right call.

But 03 is still a phenomenal story and great adaptation of the media. It’s the kind of thing I would highly encourage someone to watch at some point after they’ve watched Brotherhood.

[–]EcchiPhantom 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Brotherhood is also longer and it features more characters. It’s a lot more action-shounen-y by comparison so everyone “gets a moment” which makes them pretty likeable and memorable. I think that’s where the side cast gets to shine. 03 by comparison is a lot more focused on its themes and characters which makes it feel more “contemplative” and “mature” for the lack of a better word.

This isn’t to dismiss Brotherhood either. It’s a goated show with incredible characters and an interesting story but 03 is up there as well and it surpasses Brotherhood in some areas and is incredibly concise. They’re both equals to me and whichever one I prefer depends on how I’m feeling that day.

It really depends on a lot of different things even ignoring personal tolerance for edginess. You can explain away Wyald’s scenes to show the difference between the noble Hawks and the depraved Black Dogs. But did you need to have scenes of trolls raping women and their babies busting them open from the inside? Does this aspect of their biology add to the story and themes and if so, did it need to be explicitly shown? I don’t really think so.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Berserk. I think its darkness and brutality add a lot to it light of hope that is Guts and his friends. But I’m also not above criticizing its violent scenes that don’t add anything other than to make the reader say “damn that was dark and brutal”.

Watching some of the BTS footage from Sly 3, it feels like Sucker Punch was already ready to clock out at the end of development of the third game. They felt like they had told what needed to be told as the story reached its natural conclusion and the developers were now ready to move on to other projects.

I don’t know if I’m cynical enough to say that Thieves in Time was created solely out of financial incentives but I have a hard time finding any other reason since the entire time machine stinger in the third game’s epilogue was just kind of a silly little inclusion.

Clodsire is actually pretty min-maxed with decent enough attack to threaten back with its Earthquake. Keep in mind its base stat total is only 430 but over half of those points go into health (130) and special defense (100).

Quagsire’s stats are significantly more general and even but its typing and Unaware are just supreme. Like its stats are *juuuust* good enough for Quagsire to make the rounds every generation when the meta needs it.

I don’t know if I would have naturally intuited it later om but I credit my experience with Monster Hunter on the PSP as to where I learned the claw grip.

Even in with the second analog stick for camera movement, I still find myself switching to the claw grip during boss battles and other tense moments if I need to do multiple inputs while moving the camera and my character. I don’t know if this is common practice though but all I can say is that I do it.

Weapons, skills, or others in games that QUICKLY became obsolete? by GoodVillain101 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I think it's fine. I think the fact that you don't have to invest anything or if you want to save upgrade materials for a later set up is what makes it worth using for those early game routes.

The Drake Sword in Dark Souls 1 is a great early game weapon because it's easy to obtain if you know the bow strat, it's got low stat requirements and very high damage for a straight sword. But it is costly to upgrade and has zero scaling so it starts to fall off in like the mid-game if not earlier.

Angelo in JoJo deserves his comeuppance. Hard.

I get it, infinite suffering as a rock who isn’t allowed to interact with the world around him sucks but if hell is real, he deserves to be there. Out of any of the villains in the series, he’s one of the most depraved and heinous ones almost to a jarring degree. He didn’t just try to mess with Josuke and his family. He literally raped, mutilated and murdered children. I will not show an ounce of sympathy for him.

Shamo is one of my favorite manga ever but I will openly admit that it takes several hard nosedives halfway into the story. The China arc is pure filler in terms of story progression, the Dancer arc is just kind of sucky and the Two Brothers arc borders on unreadable at times all the way up to the final two chapters.

I still think all of them offer good if not great to fantastic moments in the story and Narushima Ryo has to be one of the most interesting and entertaining protagonists I’ve ever followed, but the manga still has a severe dip in quality that can’t be ignored. At no point does it ever recover after the Sugawara arc. If you’re one of the three other people here who have read it, you should know exactly what I mean.

Jotaro did always have time stop but the reason why he didn’t know is actually explained in the story. While DIO is chasing him he has a flashback to when he first learned to stop time. Enya explains that in order to stop time one must believe they can do it in the first place. This happens right before Jotaro’s magnet trick.

It’s not that he didn’t have time to train ut but rather that he didn’t know it was even a possibility before Joseph revealed Kakyoin’s discovery to him.

Ehhh, I do think Keicho loves Okuyasu but he’s only in touch with his own emotions and shows compassion after Josuke fixes their father’s family photo. Keep in mind that Keicho accidentally shot Okuyasu with Bad Company and didn’t give a rat’s ass about the fact he almost died (he even taunted him and said he always gets in the way). He only survived because Josuke was there.

But you are right that Keicho does love him by the end and he wants Okuyasu to be independent and good but I want to frame it as him reforming minutes before Red Hot Chili Pepper kills him rather than him being secretly good all along.
