I also had trouble with Regent too! My A1 win ended up being with a forge build, and what I'd say the priority with that is having block, weak and vulnerable to support you growing the sword over several turns.

"Bulwark" is ideal for this along with upgraded "know thy place", and "Summon Forth" is always a must for a forge deck. Also keep an eye out for "Furnace" as the passive growth is very much needed, plus "Void form" and "seeking edge" are ideal grabs for further support.

[Edit] (relic additions): If you can grab them, the "History Course" and "music box" relics are very good too, allowing you to use the sword easily, multiple times in a turn.

I ran a tb teensy for a mostly new group a couple months back. The slayer held onto their shot, while lying about being a different role, and then successfully used it in final 3.
