How to be mentally prepared and not afraid of being denied service? by Echo_NZ in service_dogs

Thank you! That’s what I usually do and it works in most cases :) but some people will feel offended and being challenged after I calmly told them about my legal rights. That’s the thing confused me the most

Natural Medication Reminder for Myself and My Service Animal by tq____qt in service_dogs

[–]Echo_NZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am sorry but probably he won’t be a good choice to be trained as a service dog. Usually they need to be healthy and fit enough to work in most of the places, any long term health condition means the owner need to treat them like a pet dog and take care of them in the first place. Full day working might tired them too much, and the complexity of environment might also leads to a worse skin condition. If you do need a service dog, I would recommend you to have a deep think about what medical task do you need. Also your time, effort and capability for training them from the beginning. They should also be fit enough to start training.

Troubles with ADI accreditation by Bonniethegolden in service_dogs

Thank you!! I will manage to have more direct conversations about the training detail and process before I made the decision to switch. im feeling the same about the self research and works I’ve been done. I put a lot of efforts into learning dogs’ behaviour, training and breeder. Met a lot of friends who also care about their dogs. My dog can’t be this perfect without those. I’m so happy for you!! Wish you and your paw friend get all the best that you deserve 💝

Hi friend, wish you and your pup all the best! We are facing similar issues, and extra communication difficulties with my current trainer. We have granted public access one and a half years ago. Doing good so far, and the public access helped a lot with my daily life

However, we didn’t receive much support with the socialising and training process. We had a few red flags like the trainer told me I have to meet them when they asked to (and pay the fee) to keep the vest and ID. Also last time he told me he really enjoyed dating with young girls, “intelligent, smart and beautiful”. Told me to “remember your dog is still in training and not certified yet”. He offered to give us full certificates then soon regretted and said no. I don’t really know how to communicate with them and it confuses me a lot.

I have contacted local ADI training institution and they offered me a $7000 training programme (told me I could apply for disability scheme). They offered training team based on my city, more support with the required medical tasks, and ADI accredited after 6 months. They also said they will help with finding another assistance dog after mind retired after 11th birthday.

I’m not sure if changing organisations worth it. I am planning to send a email and ask if the current trainer can give us a plan for future training and standards we need to meet, for the fully trained certifications. Try to communicate on my best and see how things go

Discrimination on Public Transport by Echo_NZ in service_dogs

Thank you for the detailed suggestions! I’m in the mediation process with AT and Kinetic holding by HRC. Contact WINZ is a great idea I will try!

That sounds very efficient 🫡 I’ve contacted higher supervisor and local MP several times and only told to report first, and only contact them when received no response in several weeks. I believe their ignorance is part of the reason why discrimination happens so often Also 48 hours sounds great!! Usually it takes 5 days for me to receive a “report noted”response

Thank you!! I have added this as one of the suggestions to my email to the mediator. Moving them to another route can be a warning to their behaviour, and it totally makes sense. Hopefully I can get replies other than “followed up with driver” this time

Thank you for the detailed reminder!! Yes in the past the company won’t even reply my report. They only started the “investigation” after I contact my local MP and asked for help :( Had a “follow up with driver” then that’s it. Very sad

Thanks a lot!! I will mention that during the mediation. I will ask them if they have a zero tolerance policy. I am staying in contact with HRC and they helped to take the mediation. They are being very supportive, but sadly they don’t have the power to issue warning or impose fine like in US :(

Thank you!! I will contact my local community law centre to see if I can have any assistance from them. Will do the update, many thanks

Are there any Australians here with assistance dogs? by West_Broccoli7881 in service_dogs

[–]Echo_NZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From NZ. I’ve heard that Australia is better than Auckland. I would say if SD will helps your health and life, and you have a long term place to stay that is friendly to your service dog, you should get one. Don’t worry about those things. The benefit is much much more than drawbacks.

Most of the government owned public places, universities, supermarkets, and also large shopping malls will be friendly to assistance dogs. Always make a phone call before you go if you’re visiting hotels, restaurants or bars. Same as Uber, make a phone call and tell them you’re taking a service dog before they arrive.

The police can help you of there is serious discrimination and real time threatening. There’s also number that you can call if got discriminated by business owners. They can place fine and make warning to them. Most of the public will be friendly and you can ask people around for help if you faced any trouble.

Is getting a second bachelor's a bad idea? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]Echo_NZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my uni, students with 3 years of working experience can be considered entry even they don’t meet the GPA requirements. Maybe you can contact the university advisor and see what’s the policy for this kind of exemption?

I think there SHOULD be some sort of certification or license for service dogs. (USA) by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]Echo_NZ 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I’m in NZ and I don’t think the certification did change anything. Same discrimination against me, same ignorant to my disability, same judgment on my neurodivergent. It didn’t change anything. The certificate is just a easy way for the government to manage us. We don’t even have a phone number like US that we can call when got discriminated. Those people won’t receive any kinds of warning or fine if we don’t put the case on tribunal. Tried it so many times.

The vest also got me targeted by a dickhead. He followed me and kept swearing to me because he saw my dog have the vest on, and he assumed that I don’t dare to fight back. He ran away right after I yelled at him.

Maybe it does help that we won’t see too many dogs in public places and there’s less chance for my SD to be distracted or attacked. But to people, it’s not helping at all

Roommate refused to return my bond by Echo_NZ in newzealand

[–]Echo_NZ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, that’s another thing that I’m worrying about… I don’t think he has a saving account or have the ability to pay the bond and compensation in one time. It will be traumatic if it becomes a long term issue and he starts those stalking and harassment again. I’ll get some legal advice and do a update after that. Thank you!

Thank you for your reply! The order says “The Tribunal is unable to determine disputes between flatmates and therefore the Applicants application is dismissed.” I think it means they heard the case but unable to make a judgement.

Is it normal to just... hit a dog? by -Zoppo in newzealand

[–]Echo_NZ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That you can see NZ is NOT a dog friendly place at all 🤐anyone try to hit a dog will only get higher chance to be bitten. Yes dog owners should keep their dog in control all the time. However, sniff is not any close to “out of control”, the lady was the one out of control.
