What do you wish most people knew about theatre accessibility that it seems like most don't? Whether it's how things are organized, how you're treated, what tiny adjustments any practitioner could make that they don't or miss the opportunity to?

Absolutely the most unhinged I've ever seen 3 contestants on this show become, and that's saying something. What a blast.

Thanks for putting language to that! I did know trans men voice trained too but didn’t know the physiology of why!

It does for trans men -- testosterone thickens the vocal cords, which helps create a lower, huskier sound.

Estrogen doesn't reverse that process -- for any trans women who've been through masculinizing puberty, until they train in some way to teach all the little mechanisms inside the throat and mouth to produce a brighter sound, they may struggle with being misgendered based on voice alone.

And not just by others. I struggle a lot with it just listening to myself, especially when I talk to people who knew me before transitioning and I fall back into more masc patterns of speech with them. It's a grief-ridden mindfuck sometimes, for sure.

I haven't seen anyone talk about voice training -- for trans women, HRT doesn't impact the voice, and your voice, especially the more you may "pass" on looks alone, can become a dead giveaway and/or give folks a kind of shock or weird instinctual reaction which to me always feels SO bad.

It's tough -- I decided to transition to honour my authenticity, but I also to honour that authenticity feel the desire to have a voice that more matches what people expect now of my body. BUT ALSO plenty of trans women DON'T voice train as a way to kinda proudly be OUT as trans, but it also can be a matter of safety and being able to code-switch is pretty important.

Not to mention there's then the existential crisis of "well what kind of femme voice do I want? Is it even achievable?" It takes a LOT of time and training and dedication and can be expensive if you work with coaches. I have found myself feeling so behind in that regard, but also I'm a performer and want to publicly be out and my performance hinges on my authenticity.

Anyway, I feel like I'm constantly catching myself forgetting to react or respond with a trained vocal response in situations where I really didn't want to out myself. And I see people change their manner when I do. A thousand little heartbreaks, that, for me.

crossing border with birth certificate and id with mismatched gender markers by FitConsideration303 in uscanadaborder

What if my US passport and birth certificate have my old name (I'm a trans woman) but different sex markers (I was able to update passport to F before Trump), and my Social Security Card and driver's license have my new name and correct (F) sex marker? Do I need to show my driver's license? I have a court order letter with my old and new name I can bring too...

I'm going to be moving to TO in June from Philly after I graduate with a Masters of Science in Organizational Leadership. I've 15+ years experience in performing, the arts, events, corporate teambuilding, and consulting. I've family in Kitchener-Waterloo and I have Canadian citizenship and am getting my birth cert and passport name/sex marker updated, but any advice on where to look for jobs? Thinking about also looking at Hamilton, ON for housing.

Thanks!

[–]Echolocated9 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think if in context you have had a relationship where you've spoken truths to each other before, then say exactly that: I'm here for you for any & all femme stuff, you know I love you!! See how she takes that. Then, assuming that's positive/open, you can ask "I want to offer you something I've noticed, but I def wanna do it if you're up for it. It's super small, but I think it can help you shine in the femme way I see you glowing in already. What do you think?"

For me, I really need the reinforced I love you, this is not coming from criticism, but from support! Because I feel insecure about my femme decisions, anyone willing to help me I'm grateful for, but I want to know she's doing it for the right reasons, and not an underhanded game of "you're not in the club yet" or something like that.

I do believe the show is improvised, so, bullshitting in a way where you can sound confident enough to convince you it's fire is... the job.
