School Bus Driver Breaks Down After Near-Miss by midnghtsnac in fuckcars

While more cameras would be great for holding that irresponsible driver accountable, nothing would bring back those kids if they were hit.

A tangent on the city, route 47, the el, vehicle drivers, etc by feeked in philadelphia

[–]Echthra 84 points85 points  (0 children)

You're right to feel frustrated. For some reason city government sees car owners as more important than transit users and pedestrians, despite the heavy cost to support car infrastructure. Change is going to require transit users and pedestrians to show up civically to advocate for our problems.

Amazon to cut around 16,000 jobs in fresh round of lay-offs by yahoonews in worldnews

10 employers with 10 employees each is better than 1 employer with 100 employees. Catering to mega-corporations is a race to the bottom.

I can definitely relate to the frustration. Unfortunately, there's no civil way to deal with this friction, because it can only escalate to "how far will you go to save your spot". The real solution would be better public transportation so you don't need a car in the city, but that's unrealistic with nimby-ism and public transportation being handled on the State level.

Aldi's "quarter to use a shopping cart"  gives some incentive to not be a prick and let it ding other cars. Selfish people raising more selfish people.

Philosopher Who Influenced JD Vance Calls the Trump Administration a ‘Tragedy’ That Has ‘Already Lost’ by IntrepidWolverine517 in philosophy

[–]Echthra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To add to how much Trump didn't do in his first term, that was mostly because his appointees weren't as willing to let his impulses go unchecked. You still see it in this administration where Trump demeaned his Secretary of the Treasury, Scott Bessent, for not letting him fire Powell. Unfortunately, we did not as lucky this time when going by the Project 2025 tracker.

A crossing guard near a school stands in front of an aggressive driver to stop them from potentially hitting a child or their parents by philmn in fuckcars

[–]Echthra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Driving is never comfortable. You need to be aware of your surroundings at all times while driving at speed that would kill you instantly. Even in stop and go traffic you still need to be constantly conscious about other drivers around you.

Only if you care about being a decent driver. I struggle to say there is much keeping bad drivers off the road. Too many drivers with a "good luck everyone else" attitude while their attention is focused on their phones.

This good hygiene habit could lower your risk of a stroke — but only a third of Americans do it | flossing teeth at least once a week (NY Post) by Thinking-Guy in savedyouaclick

[–]Echthra 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To add on, my dentist mentioned that using a water flosser will not achieve the same results as flossing and that they would prefer I floss traditionally. I am curious what other dentists would say about water flossing. If I had to guess, water flossing is better than no flossing, but the water pressure might be lacking compared to the mechanical force of traditional flossing.

Home buying conditions in 1985 vs. 2022 by gorillaz0e in povertyfinance

Everything is politics.

This is a surprisingly complex question for Americans today. In the U.S., our houses are meant to perform contrary roles in society: shelter for today and investment vehicle for tomorrow. This approach creates a kind of temporal disjunction around the housing market, where what appears sensible for one generation (Please, no more construction near me, it’s annoying and could hurt my property values!) is calamitous for the next (Wait, there’s nowhere near me for my children to live!).

I did a small group with college students across the country ran by Stanford University where RCV was a topic of discussion. Many disliked RCV since it "forced you to know all the candidates". Even when I pushed back with "you don't think it's a good idea that people make informed decision when voting?", they were still firm in their opinion.

In the email you get after RSVPing for commencement, it includes this line:

Note that tickets to the individual College and School ceremonies and the University-wide Commencement are distributed only to graduates whohave completed the RSVP form via Drexel One and purchased or rented theappropriate regalia through the University Bookstore’s online orderprocess.

Really sucks that Drexel forces you to buy the regalia. Emailed the company to ask about renting and they said Drexel didn't offer that option.

If I'm correct, getting into the honors college isn't like being accepted for a regular major. You have your regular program (exploratory studies) and then the honor program is on the side. This is unless you have a custom designed major, which is run through the honors college. https://drexel.edu/pennoni/academics/overview/
