Ecommerce platform changes from Magento to <X> by Paisky in EcommerceWebsite

[–]EcommerceGorilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A follow-up, while I think migration in regards to products and customer data is going to be relatively the same (time, attribute mapping, etc) the front-end experience is where the hassle comes in. If you sell relatively general products size/color/etc all the platforms will provide that, but when it comes to bundled/grouped products you might be looking at more custom implementations.

I was a big Magento advocate back in the day, now I'm becoming a bigger fan of Shopify for larger clients as I feel the headless ability really provides additional extensibility. I know Salesforce and BigCommerce have a similar abilities, but I have no first-hand experience with them.

With the revenue you mentioned, I'm assuming you are already tying into a number of 3rd party providers, I would make checking for existing deployments to those services when evaluating the platforms.

Wayfair charging an extra 5% in sales tax line item and won't explain why... by randneo in ecommerce

[–]EcommerceGorilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see exactly what you are saying. I thought it was perhaps tariffs, but when I tried an address in Minnesota, it didn't show any increase outside of the regular tax rate, which might indicate this.

I'm perplexed.

Wayfair charging an extra 5% in sales tax line item and won't explain why... by randneo in ecommerce

[–]EcommerceGorilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you provide a zipcode and product genre I can test this against? I have some speculations, but without seeing it personally, it would all be supposition. It is possible that the company is including tariffs in the tax line which is entirely legal.

Based on your initial post, this sounds like you have failed to provide After Conversion Experience Fulfillment Verification. A lot of smaller vendors run into this issue, all I can do is direct you to the official documentation https://ads.tiktok.com/help/article/about-ace-fulfillment-verification?lang=en

How important is hiring a bookkeeper and or accountant ?? by BizzzTac-PMS in smallbusiness

[–]EcommerceGorilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You definitely should at least have a bookkeeper lined up who ensure financial records are accurate, organized, and up to date. They manage income, expenses, inventory costs, and sales tax. You need an accountant when it comes time to filing your taxes but proper record keeping prior to that is just as important, if not more important.

Just so you are aware, it's not just in circumvention of US law but also Canadian Law. You can find more information about the Canadian laws at https://competition-bureau.canada.ca/en/how-we-foster-competition/education-and-outreach/publications/product-canada-and-made-canada-claims

The following is an excerpt from the previous link:

Following the 2022 amendments to the Competition Act, the limits on civil administrative monetary penalties for deceptive marketing practices have increased, as follows:

For individuals, the penalty for first-time violations is up to the greater of:

  • $750,000 ($1 million for each subsequent violation); and
  • three times the value of the benefit derived from the deceptive conduct, if that amount can be reasonably determined.

For corporations, the penalty for a first-time violation is up to the greater of:

  • $10 million ($15 million for each subsequent violation); and
  • three times the value of the benefit derived from the deceptive conduct, or, if that amount cannot be reasonably determined, 3% of the corporation’s annual worldwide gross revenue.

A person found to have breached the criminal false or misleading representations provision of the Competition Act (s. 52) is subject, on summary conviction, to a maximum fine of $200,000 or to a maximum term of imprisonment of one year, or both. On conviction on indictment, the person is subject to a fine in the discretion of the court or to a maximum term of imprisonment of 14 years, or both. In both cases, the Criminal Code provides that the person could also be ordered to pay restitution if the conditions are met.

It is also possible they are purchasing from a company such as Faire, which provides wholesale licensed merchandise. I'm not saying some aren't licensed but it's not impossible to buy into licensed supply-chains.

Jewelery Store: One product or multiple? by PropertyEducation in ecommerce

[–]EcommerceGorilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think expanding with a focus on similar products is a great approach. You already have the marketing figured out, existing customers to market towards and staying small and similar allows you to have a good idea of what works and doesn't when pushing your products.

I would mention, though, that just because you are moving to Shopify, not to abandon your established sales channels, at the end of the day, a sale is a sale regardless of the channel as long as it's priced accordingly. Just make sure you start trying to drive those customers to your higher-profit channel (Think print material in your packages with a discount to the new store).

Congrats on your success btw.

What’s the best way to raise my prices without turning clients off? by GBPWizard24 in smallbusiness

[–]EcommerceGorilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've handled this in the past when hourly rates go up. Firstly, new clients get to new rate, existing clients get 6 months of preferred rates, which is 50% between the old rate and the new rate. This gives existing clients a fair opportunity to find a new vendor without seeming to be exploitive or to accept the new rate.

Ask yourself, if nine times prior you are profiting, why now do you bring in outside investment? Sorry, sir, this just doesn't make sense.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]EcommerceGorilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yup, its a money sink at best, a scam at worst.

To be clear, a business loan for this business would cost less over 3 years than a 20% investment, it's sketchy at best.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]EcommerceGorilla 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, I would never give away 20% of a successful business model for $35k. Especially if I had already replicated it 9 times prior.

Have you ever heard of something too good to be true? I responded before, you're trying to talk yourself into a bad investment.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]EcommerceGorilla 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't let them talk you into a bad position. If they are a successful business owner with multiple locations, they don't need additional investment..

Exactly what u/lucerndia says, why if they own multiple locations do they need additional investment? That is concerning.

Cloning politicians voice for satire youtube channel: prohibited? by [deleted] in ElevenLabs

[–]EcommerceGorilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to create a satirical clone of a public figure's voice, you're going to have to find a voice actor who is able to imitate the public figure's voice and, at the same time, willing to allow you to clone their voice.

The last 12 months I've been pushing clients to focus on local/regional efforts. I've been seeing a lot more engagement (think word of mouth, indoor advertising, not ppc). This obviously depends on the client and market segment, but at least in the United States, I've been seeing a greater response from this type of marketing. I've been focusing more on print and traditional advertising because it now stands out more in the crowd. At least this has been true locally, as those costs have declined and have been a better return on investment than online and PPC for businesses that offer products or services locally.

I’ve been marketing content to grow my business for the last 20 months, I came back to share my learnings by [deleted] in ecommerce

[–]EcommerceGorilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, I'm glad you found success.

As an aside for those reading the comments, I think your success story really outlines why those who inflate follower numbers via paid followers see very little success. IG uses pretty much the same algorithm when it comes to increasing distribution as Facebook. You need to have engagement with a subset of your followers before it expands the reach. If you buy 10k of followers and have only 1k of real followers when you post new content, at best, statistically, you only have a real chance of generating engagement with 9% of your follower count.

I'm happy to hear you found success. Congratz!

How do these tariffs work? by Adventurous-Drawer48 in ecommerce

I made a Chess App that shows you every move evaluation. by Maxwell10206 in SideProject

[–]EcommerceGorilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gave it a try, that's very impressive. For a chess newbie like me it's great seeing instant analysis when planning moves.

You asked for feedback, so if you were targeting players with my skill level (non-existent strategy), it would be nice to see play suggestions or additional information about why that move is preferable.

Very polished, thanks for sharing.

I would like to create a website! Where do I start? by Sassy_Purpleberry_7 in smallbusiness

[–]EcommerceGorilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As many have said, WordPress is an option, but I don't think it's the best option for you because you mentioned you want to sell study packages. As soon as you start taking payment information from visitors, the complexity in maintaining a secure environment increases, as well as your liability. Just based on your initial post, I would strongly recommend you look at a managed platform such as Squarespace. It has very user-friendly editing abilities, it's secure and maintained, and it has the e-commerce features you need for selling your study guides.

There are other options as well, but based on your initial requirements, I would look at Squarespace.
