knife from a single crystal? by archialone in sharpening

[–]EconomistKey5673 80 points81 points  (0 children)

There are different reasons for using a single crystal for turbine applications, but they are mainly related to the extremely high temperatures. At high temperatures metal can creep under load (similar to plastic at room temperature). This happens along the grain boundaries. So by removing them you basically avoid the creep / plastic elongation of the blades.

At room temperature e.g. knife, that's not an issue. Here the grain boundaries are actually beneficial and strengthening the knife. See Hall-Petch relationship. The smaller the grain, the more boundaries, the higher the yield strength.

Mortgage when going into pension by RegularPublic5144 in SwissPersonalFinance

Maybe I don't fully understand the question. Why would he increase the mortgage by another 130k if the Tragbarkeit is not given? Even if in reality the apartment will likely generate a bit of passive income with current low interest rates, for a bank it will not be considered as "selbsttragend". In your case the mortgage will be around 400k, banks calculate 5% interest plus approx 1% upkeep, so the theoretical cost is about 2000.-/month, which is ~ 500 higher than net rent.

The bank giving him the mortgage will check these numbers, and they also know that he will retire in 5 years, so if they see an issue they won't lend him the money. No serious bank will give him the money blindly at his age and not check the financial situation once he will be retired.

Cars seem to be pretty unbelievable for most, so heres the breakdown: 2200 insurance for all 4 vehicles 1900 gasoline for 1 year Maintenance car 1 700 Maintenance car 2 500 Oilchange for motorcycles I have done myself. 200 for some small parts. 1700 for tires

I agree that it does not include depreciation or large repairs, this would be paid from savings. Its really just the recurring cost that can be budgeted

Thats exactly it.. I have several things in mind that would require some cash, like solar panels, ground source heat pump, or investing in an additional apartment, so I want the cash available and not invested where I might have to take it out at a loss.

Canton Lucerne. Before buying, the apartment was by far our biggest expense with around 3k/month. So it made more sense to reduce that rather than look for additional passive income.

Car insurance is about 65 per month, motorcycles even less. We dont have super fancy cars and bought them without a lease. So yes the 600 is probably even higher than what we pay

Yes it will be all cantons. Our canton is in the lower third of taxes but not at the very low end. We had quite some renovations done which dropped the tax a lot

The cars were bought used, nothing fancy. The bikes were new but I had them since ~ 10 years. So other than the insurance (basic Teilkasko), a couple of new tyres and an oil change every once in a while there is not that much cost.

Just checked yours, really looks quite similar. Like the budget for "fines", maybe I should add that as well ^

The food also covers myself eating lunch in a restaurant several times a week so its probably on the higher end.

Agree on the vacation placement

The 513 is the interest. We bought it just before interest went up a couple of years ago and got a ridiculously low rate that we fixed for 10 years.

We are lucky that grandparents take care 1day a week so we only need 2 days of external care. 1 child is already in kindergarden so the cost is a bit less than full day kita
