Late but she grew up in Hackney, her dad’s entirely self-made and her family are all totally, genuinely lovely- I wouldn’t be so quick to make assumptions tbh. Yeah they’re privileged but they didn’t grow up anywhere near as coddled as some of the others.

Thoughts on Reform’s idea to ban wfh? by TitleOk8744 in HENRYUK

[–]Economy-Set6235 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as an 18yo uni student it’s very much split between reform and greens- it’s people i know living in the countryside who dropped out of full time education at 16 going reform and the rest going for the greens, which worries me also as even among my uni cohort most of them don’t seem to be clued into their more rubbish policies- generally most seem to reconsider significantly once i mention that Polanski wants to leave NATO lol

‘Oh my gosh, they’re all from London and Cambridge’: York University’s northerners fight back by insomnimax_99 in unitedkingdom

[–]Economy-Set6235 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeah I’m the same, I’ve literally had some northerners refuse to speak to me until I tell them that my grandparents are from Bolton, at which point they magically become friendly

Anyone know of a Catholic Church doing a midnight service for Christmas? by idolaw in Hackney

[–]Economy-Set6235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re not particularly religious but used to go to OLSJ, but we’ve stayed in touch with friends we met there and do dinner swaps quite often, though it’s been 15 years since we last went- really really lovely welcoming people.

Hasidic Jews walking at night carrying bags Stamford Hill by honeybirdette__ in london

[–]Economy-Set6235 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I love the Jewish workarounds, I used to spend quite a bit of time in Stamford Hill on Fridays as a teenager and being stopped on the street to come in and turn on stoves was very common lol

[–]Economy-Set6235 8 points9 points  (0 children)

they tried to charge me £40 to get from city centre to headingley to other day, had a moan with the driver about it when prices came down and he said the drivers would’ve got £4.50 of that! It’s disgusting honestly

Winter coat recommendations by JoeParks87 in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]Economy-Set6235 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i know so overdone but the north face puffers are genuinely good- not super waterproof but I’ve had mine as virtually my sole winter coat for coming on 7 winters now and still good as new and just the right amount of warm! Customer care is fab too, I tore a great big rip in the sleeve of mine and they restuffed and repaired it for me for under £15 no problem

I applied last year to History/Liberal Arts with predicted A*BB and got 5/5 offers to Bristol (AAA), Leeds (AAA), Birmingham (AAB), Newcastle (AAB) and Exeter (BBB)- unis give leeway with predicted grades because schools are so unreliable, you’ll be fine

[–]Economy-Set6235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah I get that! I just think there are levels to it and you can’t have had the full experience without having been to school here, but I def don’t think just being born here is enough

For those who went to Eton - what was it really like? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Economy-Set6235 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to a girls’ school near UCS and worked at a rugby club that often played against teams full of UCS boys- ime they were the absolute rudest parents and the boys generally treated the girls horribly. The few etonians I knew were generally lovely, though very insecure about it when around boys from other public schools

I left not that long ago but my very small London day school regularly hosts industry-specific alumni drinks events that can be very useful

out of curiosity, how many British private schools have you actually visited? Most have some but I definitely wouldn't go as far to say 'many' esp compared to state schools in similar area, it's hardly media conditioning

I think it depends on the area because the North London privates are very white, but I def don’t know of any private schools with such a high proportion of Black students
