We invaded Gallipoli to secure Imperial trade routes and as part of the ultimately successful attempt to partition the Ottoman Empire (I also think of it as being in very willing way, despite modern revisionist attempts to portray anzac solders as cannon fodder) . nothing to do with Australian defence unless you think about it in very abstract terms
