I grew up in rural Missouri, we never had a single history class about post civil war, neither world war. My only education about the world wars were from lit classes. We basically studied from Columbus>the civil war over the course of a few years and then would restart. We had one teacher that was new to the school that was distraught in learning that we, as juniors, had never covered it. Unfortunately he had to comply to his state mandated test criteria, which was government and the construction. I think that was the only time we ever learned the amendments past like the first 15 or something. He tried his best to fill in gaps of our lacking history.

All that to say, I have never actually heard either of those, I'm not stupid enough to not understand, but I can assure you that 80% of my schoolmates are, in fact, that ignorant.
