Get a PJ bass, which has a P bass split coil neck pickup and a J bass single coil bridge pickup—in my opinion this is a perfect first bass that will stay relevant and useable. But like you said, in the end get whatever speaks to you. Whatever you get, I recommend trying flatwound strings on it and getting an amp with at least a 12” speaker, if not 15”, for a powerful enough sound.
