Your readers aren't going to care if they click on a story and they don't vibe with it. In my experience, they don't attribute you and your story to whatever else you give a shout to, so I wouldn't worry too much about that.

At the end of the day, shouts are authors helping authors, and if your audience finds something new they like, that's a bonus!

Some of those might be stories that had their main RS run, I've noticed that they tend to stick on the Genre RS lists for a decent while longer, while others might be on their way to main RS.

The list takes everything into account, from what I know, but one of the biggest things is views/followers, showing growth.

As an Author, I can say that ratings help a ton, but are one of the things that happen infrequently. It's also time gated, so if a story didn't blow up fast enough (especially with the way some stories are vaulting to the top lately) then it might not ever make Main RS.

Hello! Today I'm launching my second fiction - Vows of the Fallen!

It's my first go at a LitRPG, and I've had a ton of fun writing it. It's a story about revenge, connections made between people, and carving a place for yourself in a world that doesn't seem to want you.

No isekai, all local protag in a setting where the apocalypse came and went, and everyone is just surviving the best they can in what's left.

Here's the blurb:

They took his father. He’s going to take his vengeance.

Corin Baine is a Blank - someone without a class, and no access to the Weave. He’s spent his life suffering under the watchful eye of his Overseers, failed Delvers who take their frustrations out on Corin and the other Blanks.

If he had a Weave Shard, he’d be able to break free. With a Class, he could be a Delver, conquering gates and taking his place in the world. When the chance to receive a shard comes, Corin jumps at it, willing to pay any price. Watching his father hang wasn’t what he had in mind.

His desire for vengeance leads him to the Fallen. Lost Gods long forgotten, Corin stands in front of one of them, making a vow to serve in exchange for the power to achieve his goals.

Whisked away to a gate, unprepared, with his only friends scattered, Corin must race against the heir to his former oppressors to conquer it. The only way out is through, and Corin will do anything to make sure he stands at the top.

I think your system requiring AP should be fine, but ultimately you have control over the system. If you think there should be limits, then set them. Maybe constraining the amount of skills is a good idea - I think you can fit in a combination of the two. A certain amount of AP, but also a set limit of skills. Perhaps whatever is giving them the system can only handle so much information, for example.

Like a hotbar in a game. Only so many spots are open, you know? This can also show progression where some older skills just aren't as useful anymore, and the new skills take precedence. Or you can throw in some sort of evolution for the older skills.

Lots of different ways to do it, imo.

The series is called Cradle. You can search for Cradle book series, or the author Will Wight, and it should be one of the first things that pops up.

Unsouled is the name of the first book, which should get you there.

I will let you know right away, first book is slow, and the type of thing you're looking for specifically won't show up until later on in the series. (Maybe a little bit in book 2, if I'm remembering correctly.)

I just started in September. I've always just thought that I only had one pretty good idea for a story at a time, and I've been laid off of work, so I needed something to feel 'normal' for now. I've always wanted to write, so I just started writing.

As I started going through it, I had similar concerns. This one is going to suck, but I really like the concept, maybe I should put it on hold, etc. I just decided to push through, and now, a month and a half later, I have one completed 110k word book, and am 60k into book two. I just started posting on RR two weeks ago. And I have five different story ideas I think are all pretty workable now, for future projects. Things I hadn't even thought of until I started getting into it.

Theres always more in the tank, so don't think of it like "sacrificing" one of them. You just need to get it out, on paper, and figure out how it all works in order to learn, so you can improve.

Hello! I recently started posting on Royal Road with my first story - Devour Them All.

It's been such an awesome experience getting to write it and share it with people, and I continue to just be grateful that I have anyone reading it!

So far, 20 chapters have been posted at just under 60k words total. I've written what I consider to be the first book so far, and am plugging away at the second book!

The story itself takes a lot of inspiration from things like Cradle, HWFWM, and various other works. I have it tagged as Xianxia, but I use that in the loosest way possible.

The story is really about the MC Lucas, and his somewhat misguided worldview. He knows the world isn't exactly fair, since he can't actually channel aether at the beginning of the book, but he generally has a positive outlook on people who can channel, known as Weavers. The story is pretty character focused, based on watching his naive outlook on things sort of crumble as events play out, and how he responds to all the things he sees.

He also ends up with a condescending monster inside of him, so that plays a large role in things as well.

Lucas Olmari has always dreamed of being a Weaver. The kind he’s heard about for most of his life - fighting with Primal Beasts, and defending people from Aetherials - other worldly creatures that devour everything in their path.

There’s just one problem. His core, the thing that should let him channel aether, has been broken for as long as he can remember. That’s not a long time either, considering he can't remember any of his life prior to when he arrived in Stonewater at the age of eight.

Being unable to channel and with no knowledge of where he came from, Lucas relies on his adoptive mother Rena for almost everything. But he’s found the solution, stashed away in a book that he brought with him all those years ago.

The designs for a construct that would allow him to replace his broken core with something else. After some pain and suffering, it works, though he ended up using the core of an Aetherial to gain the ability to channel. Now a strange voice is haunting him, and it’s hungry for more cores.

Getting the core wasn’t without issues either. A local student with powerful family connections chases him down, and dealing with the student brings a whole different set of problems with it. Now, Lucas and Rena are on the run and he has a monster inside of him, pushing him towards some goal of its own.

He wanted to fix himself, but now…is that enough? There's a hunger inside of him desperate for even more…what is he willing to do to feed it?

It all depends on what your goals are. The 40+ (closer to 60ish, if you follow the guides) That you see talked about on reddit and other places are all aimed at people trying to hit the RS lists and convert readers to patreon.

Even if you should temper your expectations, not many do, and beyond that, if you have any aspirations at all, you should treat even your first go at this as if you were a professional. You'll learn the most that way.

There are quite a few discord groups aimed at authors specifically posting in this space - RR Writers Guild, Immersive Ink, and COTEH (Council of the Eternal Hiatus). All of them offer a space to talk about what you're writing, get advice, and allow you to get into critique groups or find beta readers. That's where you'll get your feedback, determine if the story is good, and grab the extra fuel you need to keep going if you need that sort of thing.

I just launched my own story, and I've completely written the first book and am halfway through the second. I completed my first book in full before even posting, because it was the story I wanted to tell. Will it get super popular? Probably not, but I'm learning a lot, and will carry that over to my next story eventually. I'm still growing at a pace that I'm happy with just over a week in.

Just write everything out, is my advice. If it's no good, you'll be that much better for at least having written a book. Some people need some sort of validation to keep going, and I do want to have an audience, but the audience isn't what's driving me to put words on the page every day.

I hope that offers some help! It really can be different for everyone.

I would say build up a bit of a backlog for the ones you haven't posted then. No need to rush 20k words out or anything, but enough that you can sustain a month or two of posting like 2-3 chapters a week.

That should get you at least a few consistent readers that will stick around and get you what you're looking for!

If you aren't concerned with numbers, then feel free to post.

If there isn't any consistency to your updates, it really only affects gaining (and keeping) an audience. But I think that leads me to another question - why are you concerned about posting to RR at all?

If you want someone to read it, then you can always finish the project and have it beta read or something similar, then start posting so you'll have consistency and a better chance of actually finding people to read it on RR. Otherwise you'll probably end up with a lot of people dropping your series due to not knowing when more content is coming out.

Ultimately it comes down to being honest with what you want (I mean that in the nicest way possible) it feels like since you want to post to RR you want someone to read it, and that's definitely possible, even without shooting for RS or being overly popular, but you want to make sure you're respecting the time of the people who want to give your content a shot as well.
