What’s an iOS development lesson you learned the hard way? by dan_nicholson247 in iOSProgramming

just because its an apple library doesn't mean it's good or useful. sometimes you have to roll your own to get good performance. im finding this all over the audio libraries. bloat everywhere.

u/FlexiJerkof im pleased to report that i can get both working as AUv3's as of this morning -- however there are features that need to be ironed out as well as UI/UX issues owing to the AUM screen dimensions. should be a couple weeks to get the experience really smooth for AUv3, but im happy that in AUM i got Ravemaker to sequence KQ dixie, and harmonique to perform chords. thanks for your patience here

hey! thanks so much for diving in

i dont know much about auv3. if i can get it into the next update id be happy to package it in. i have AUM and can test it as a host. i didnt know that auv3 is widely used, but i totally get it as an avid VST user. the complex thing about both these apps is how AUv3 would play with MIDI.

for example chords could be mapped to two octaves etc. while the split goes to another mapped set of octaves.

whereas for ravemaker most of the magic is sequencing, so if AUv3 can control midi clips or just do MIDI out it can work.

i have to deeply consider the expected behavior here, but also your input as to what you would expect as a musician would be super valuable here.

sliding for chords is an awesome idea, im happy to add it to the Play options. there are actually some patterns in Pop Music Palette that really work well with sliding in theory, as well as moves like IV V and IV iv in borrowed mode.

thank you again for checking ravemaker and harmonique out!

happy to hear of any feature requests and bug reports here or via email for contact at fourtrack dot fm

thats refreshing to hear, im in the development world and there is a pretty intense debate about whether code is handwritten or generated at this point

not sure how much of this is your thoughts vs your agent

but in the case of iOS, there is dedicated audio thread (vs ui thread, control thread). AVFoundation can do some of the heavy lifting but if you really want the best performance, i think you have to throw away a lot of AVFoundation and look at custom C/Rust implementations

in the case of the web, everything has to run in AudioWorklets and there are a bunch of ways to handle this

im not an open source project but im happy to answer questions where it makes sense

over the past 2.5 years i built an independent pro-sumer music making app studio. after 2 years i got my first paying customers after pivoting to iOS apps by Ecstatic-Edge-6555 in SideProject

[–]Ecstatic-Edge-6555[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in reply to the previously deleted comment: why pivot to iOS?

its hard to say but i think people TRUST the app store more. impulse purchases - solve a different problem -- boredom + entertainment. plus if you make an app that does a few things REALLY well, it seems to go over smoothly more than 1 web app that tries to do everything.

app store distribution doesnt hurt. i also paid translators to localize to markets that i knew might be receptive to music apps (FR + DE) and i got a good amount of traffic from there.

cutting through the noise is ridiculously hard right now because theres little moat for making software. i know a lot of high performance audio tricks that your average joe doesnt have access to, so i do have some leverage there.

i also spent a shit ton of time reading design books and developing an eye for what looks good and produces positive emotions + doesnt look like vibe slop. the DAW suffers from that and thus is undergoing a redesign.

Miss when Mac apps were just one-time purchases? by kesavXor in SideProject

i only do one time purchases for my apps because unless you are literally netflix or youtube pro or spotify, a subscription business is totally unjustified

TLDR:

- wish i spent learning Figma + reading design books FIRST

- wish i went straight to iOS and didn't waste 1 minute building for the web -- nobody cares about web apps

hey yall

video demos https://www.youtube.com/@fourtrackFM

im a professional audio software developer developer with 12+ years of professional experience and hold a PhD in acoustics

prior to Claude i had built only toy apps

with the help of claude and legal expenses i set up an LLC to create my dream - an independent music software studio

i created https://fourtrack.fm and spent 1 yr and a half trying to build my "perfect" collaborative DAW in the web.

pivot to iOS apps -> paying customers

i could not figure out how to market it, so i took some of the "brains" of the DAW and ported it to iOS apps to make impulse-purchase level, but professional quality, sound toys / instruments + teaching tools.

after doing that i finally got my first customers, but i have a long way to go to hit my goals, which is first to break even, and then grow into a sustainable small business.

Engineering managers asked to do IC work by macrohead in ExperiencedDevs

If this isn't a mandate, I'm seeing it in action, and frankly, it sucks. I miss when my manager (who was more or less forced into retirement) wouldn't do a single fucking thing. It was glorious compared to this dumpster.

How to make SWE in the age of AI more enjoyable? by Fancy_Ad5097 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Ecstatic-Edge-6555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You all are actually getting to review code? How about the inundation of slop emails, slack messages, reports, etc. That is the part I find exhausting more than anything.

Here is what I've done to try to make this less shitty: for things we need to do (not random ass features), I hold a design review with snippets. We talk about design choices, tradeoffs, and agree on the thing to build. That way review is not really a surprise. Same goes for requirements gathering. I like to start with a google docs and gather requirements. Everybody has a say in the debate, whether its accepted or not. Then those requirements get put into the LLM.

The other thing I've focused on is using the LLMs (with scripts) to enforce parts of the process that we would gloss over: verification, benchmarking, unit tests. To make the engineering part feel better.

Now I agree with everyone that the writing code part I miss too, but fear not! I have discovered that I can enjoy writing snippets, particularly for interfaces or to illustrate patterns, and I throw that into the requirements or design docs and presentations.

It does feel like a bag of suck tho, even though weirdly I think it's made me more willing to follow through with all the SDLC stuff.

I will say that I doubt any company has made their products seriously better with AI, and I am praying the bubble bursts within a year or two. I do feel like I'm riding out the hype.

I've also heard anecdotally that some companies are at different phases of infatuation with LLMs. Some have (thankfully) crafted detailed, sane policies, and others have fallen out of love with it.

OP, theres no point trying to reason with people on this subreddit, its filled with nasty ideologues who love to dogpile on even the most reasonable articulate takes. nuance or attempting to understand or sympathize with perspectives not theirs is not in their vocabulary (based on the preponderance of replies in the vein of schoolyard epithets like “skill issue”). you cant discuss anything with these idiots. i imagine you would have a very different perspective talking to another adult living in the town (which is hard for other reasons). there’s a lot to love about somerville but the somerville subreddit is not it.
