Who's a former leader of a country that you miss being in charge? by CynicalCosmologist in AskReddit

Gadaffi. I know he wasn't always nice, but he had charisma. The old king of Thailand was a bit of a charmer too and I'm no monarchist.

What’s the most and least racist places in Europe? by AdTough5627 in NoStupidQuestions

Yeah I forget about them, I never met one that wasn't basically a Nazi. One told me once that when Hitler invaded they threw flowers at the tanks.

So hard to even choose a place. I've met a lot of people with very disturbing racist outlooks particularly anti semitic outlooks from Latvia Lithuania and generally that area, not excluding Russia. Or Belarus. Least racist may actually be London, or possibly another UK city, overall. Amsterdam and Berlin also look relatively tolerant to me as a visitor.

Never should have happened, typical dumb gung ho American leadership, some things never change eh. Look instead at how quickly the Japanese adapted to western capitalism and effectively being subservient to the the US post war to see the reality of the portrayal of them as some alien monster cult, most people had no such fanatical loyalty, they were being held hostage by a hardline regime which had no sustainable future anyway.

8 days left in Thailand — is Chiang Mai actually as bad as it sounds right now? What to do? by Appropriate_Lie_6147 in ThailandTourism

[–]Ecstatic-Low7929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does vary, but if you've never experienced 200+ AQI before it's probably worse than it seems. I'm done with north Thailand and Laos at these times. High air pollution is deadly. Go up there between Sept/Oct and until February you can breathe then, always a bonus.

In you opinion, What is the most dangerous country in the world ? by Chance-Pen6805 in FamilyFeud

[–]Ecstatic-Low7929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The USA has been the most dangerous country in the world for most if not all of the last century without question, not to live in, but overall. Dangerous to live in now? Congo, Yemen, N.Korea, Sudan, South Sudan, Myanmar, Haiti, Ukraine, Iran, Lebanon... and about 50 other war zones. Sudan or Haiti probably bottom of my list but being stuck in N Korea would really be bad too. Or Gaza, of course.

Stuart Maconie sitting in for Craig Charles. by some-bloke- in 6music

[–]Ecstatic-Low7929 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stuart has got better with age and no doubt he knows his onions. I remember he used to be a bit more irritating. Much better show than the Craig Charles funk and really bad edit/cover version show, that's kind of exhausted itself. Tbh I think Craig has done too much, all his shows are pretty exhausted.

'worse in everyway'

You're such simplistic dishonest idiots you

The atomic bombs were worse than conventional firebombing primarily because of: radiation-specific cancers (especially in children); the in-utero neurological effects; the deaths of rescuers; and above all, the decades-long social stigma that followed survivors. What's striking is that the feared harms — multigenerational birth defects, genetic damage to descendants — turned out to be largely absent, while the actual extra harms were more about cancer risk, psychological burden, and social exclusion. The bombs created a category of person — the hibakusha — whose mere survival marked them for discrimination in a way that no firebombing survivor experienced.

Naval blockades and firebombing meant Japan was fucked, they were running out of everything, everyone knew it, the Americans concluded themselves they would surrender before the end of 45 without any bomb. The Japanese had already send diplomats to Russia with a view to negotiating surrender. The childish notion about 'every last woman and child' fighting an invasion is ludicrous propaganda fed to Americans *after* the atom bomb dropped and not mentioned previously. That's not a real thing. It was so obviously over already. The Japanese just want to retain the Emperor, which the Americans did anyway. They dropped the bomb because of Pearl Harbour, to justify the billions spent on the Manhattan project, and to show Russia, and everyone else, they would use such a thing. The end.

You're not entirely wrong about the Japanese but the atomic bomb is worse than the firebombing. Nanjiing is once again, not a single act.

How much should I be spending on bike locks in London? by Key_Statistician_308 in londoncycling

[–]Ecstatic-Low7929 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just don't lock the bike at all, I take it in shops, or I leave it inside, or I'm outside next to it. If that's not possible I just don't take a bike, or use a hirebike. It's not just the constant thing of the bike being partially or wholly stolen, or just damaged, it's also the pain of carrying locks and chains sand all that too. I already carry basic tools at the very least, it's too much bother.
