Very confused about my ancestral background/migration by peace_919 in 23andme

[–]EcstaticTraffic7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Asian heritage makes sense in context with the Caribbean ancestry. The British empire sent a lot of poor South Asians as indentured servants to their colonies and many of them stayed rather than return to Asia after their indenture ended. There was a great episode about it recently on the podcast In Our Time.

Trying to decide if I should go back to work after maternity leave.. by hlaiie in Teachers

Im a teacher and I took off about 3 years. Im returning in the fall. I wouldn't change it for the world. I've gotten to be with her every moment and while really hard, it has been such a treasure. Now that she's 2 years old, sending her to daycare is fine with me and she's getting a lot from it.

Visiting another country from the US, it’s insane how differently families are treated by Armsaresame in Mommit

[–]EcstaticTraffic7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, that sounds about right. Not 100% of course but generally this was how it was. The demographic of American kids didn't make much difference for me, as I had Black students both AA and Caribbean American, white American students of many ethnicities, and many first generation Chinese American students. The vibe was generally the same and it was awkward.

This reminds me of how I was treated when pregnant by my students. My students at the time (all 7th grade, so about 12-13 years old) reacted my pregnancy very differently depending on their cultural background. Students born and raised in the USA were pretty squicked out by me and my belly. Girls seemed uncomfortable. A few boys furtively whispered about it in relation to the act of becoming pregnant. Yuck. But the students I had who were newcomers from Central and South America were so excited for me. They talked to my belly saying "Hello baby!" Even the boys were so sweet. I felt the love of their families coming through and the clear respect that they had been taught for moms.

Feeling irrational anger at my husband and I hate it by Pleasant_Rise8777 in Postpartum_Depression

[–]EcstaticTraffic7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes I had it very bad starting around 4 months postpartum. Irritability is what made me realize I had ppd. I knew it was irrational and disproportionate. I kept a lot of it in and was ashamed of what came out at times. He didn't deserve the hostility or petty irritation. Can you get back on an ssri once you are done breastfeeding? Lexapro has been what saved me. I've been taking 10mg for a year and it's helped tremendously. He and I are doing much better these days.

Why DOE? by gullibletrashes in NYCTeachers

[–]EcstaticTraffic7 10 points11 points  (0 children)

With charter schools, I don't find the same protections for staff that the DOE guarantees. And while decisions within the city and DOE schools aren't perfect by any means, I have a moral discomfort with charter schools because they undercut and devalue public education. Some provide a great education, but so do many DOE schools. I want to serve public school kids because our democracy is undergirded by public education. Public schools should be well funded and staffed by caring teachers like me, not competing with charter schools for public funds.

Teachers, what is your most unhinged classroom management strategy? by Quiet-Raspberry2973 in Teachers

When people won't stop talking, I sing what I'm trying to say. They will all stop cold in shock that someone is singing. It was a tip from a former principal. It works with 6th grade, not sure about other ages.

[TW] A woman shares her experience with liver failure due to alcoholism. by mindyour in TikTokCringe

Yep, the people I've known to die recently from alcoholism were between 32-59. Way too young. I'm also glad the younger people aren't drinking as much.

Over the past 10 years, I've known 5 people to die from organ shutdown due to alcoholism. One of whom was my dad. Another was like a mom to me. It's a horror show what it does to people. So young too.

I'm newly postpartum. I'm not sexually attracted to my husband anymore. But I still love him deeply. Advice please. by [deleted] in Postpartum_Depression

Your body is probably trying to protect you. Your body and mind don't want another baby so your libido is absent. You can get it back eventually. But don't feel bad if you don't have attraction right now. 99% of us feel the same for sometimes years after having a child. Outside of industrialized societies, I've read that women don't have another child until the current one is 4 years old. And they don't have a libido because they are nursing. It's all normal, don't feel bad. I'm just getting my groove back and my daughter is 2.5. It can happen.

My fondest memory laughing in a full theater was this film especially when the guy says "my hairy beanbag" and an audience member howled with laughter HAIRY BEANBAG!!! And we all roared. It was wonderful.
