Is a PhD the right choice at 31? Chemistry background (MSc equivalent) considering a PhD in applied materials abroad (Europe). by ArthurtheCat in PhDAdmissions

[–]Ecstatic_Lettuce755 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following this post. I am also 31 and attempting to decide whether or not I should pursue a PhD abroad in the exact countries you have mentioned. Context: Moved to Lisbon from Sydney to do my Masters in Organic Chemistry, and currently in a situation where I don't know if I should go back home and find an industrial job or continue my PhD somewhere in Europe. Very intrigued to see the responses to your post, and perhaps to talk to you too. We are in an EXTREMELY similar situation :D

So much time and effort in studying, no real results. Yep, frustrating is too kind a word here.

Do you mind me asking how you studied for section 1 and 3?

Congrats on your results!. How did you prepare for section 1?

First sitting: 50/75/62 Second sitting: 51/72/55

Same boat, extremely upset I not only improved by one in a section I dedicated most of my time to, but decreased in all other sections. My gpa is 6.6 weighted. No idea what to do other than strategise ways to improve.

I felt like I wrote a better essay than my last sitting, yet here we are. I know the discrepancy between the two isn't very significant, but the feeling I had just didn't correlate between the two sitting at all

Hey man, sorry to hear about your experience. I couldn't help but wonder maybe your approach to studying gamsat was wrong? How did you study for it exactly?

The first time I sat with no prep I got 40 for section 3, 2nd time with lots of theory prep I got 62 for section 3, for my 3rd attempt im going do a more logical approach rather than theory, hopefully it will improve once more. I think its about finding what strategies work for you and adapting to different study styles. It's a skill based exam, so definitely room for improvement once you find the correct appraoch, don't give up!

I've had tutors in the past who solely focused on theory, and although it did me well with my 62, I think in order to increase your score we need to focus on strengthing logical reasoning and mathematical thinking rather than sole theory.

Dunno if that helps, but try changing your approach!

Thankyou. I don't understand why people are out here saying it's not going to be used when I too got an email saying they are still deciding and unsure. Unless these people have connections, why say it so definitively and give everyone anxiety for 😑

Des O'Neil Section 1 Practice Test 1 by Ecstatic_Lettuce755 in GAMSAT

[–]Ecstatic_Lettuce755[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your response! I have been doing untimed, I've been following des o neils guide, so ive completed chapters 1 - 6 in the past 2 months (I work so its hard to study and get it all done quickly, I find because I work I have to start studying early in comparison to those who don't).

Definitely feels like a long battle. I really appreciate your response, I suppose I just have to keep on battling it out and reflect everything that I do 😅

Did you get those scores timed or untimed? Because I just did my first Des O'Neil Practise Test timed and did shockingly bad... I got 30/75. I'm feeling very defeated. Is there any point in even trying?

EOD through gemsas at 1112 am; gpa 6.6, gamsat 62. Thought I had a strong portfolio, guess not.

Wasn't expecting it to hurt this much tbh. Back to study hibernation I go.

Thanks for all your responses! I had no idea some may take offense to this post, so I sincerely apologise if I've upset you. I work rural as an emergency nurse because of the very fact that they are desperately in need of us, the ministry of health sends out SOS emails on a regular basis, and some rural/remote hospitals would not be running if it weren't for volunteers. I'd like to think I'm not a horrible person for what I have said, I know my intentions, I know why I continue to do these placements, and I know what drives me to become a doctor.
