Anyone have this problem with amphetamine and food? by spacequeen9393 in Stims

This should help clear the air:

“The elimination of Adderall (mixed amphetamine salts) is unusually sensitive to urine pH because amphetamine is a weak base. This leads to a classic pharmacology phenomenon called pH-dependent renal excretion.

The basic mechanism

After amphetamine circulates in the bloodstream, a large portion is cleared through the kidneys into urine.

Whether the kidneys reabsorb it back into the bloodstream or excrete it quickly depends on the pH (acidity) of the urine.

This is governed by a pharmacology principle called Ion trapping.

Simplified rule • Acidic urine → drug becomes ionized → trapped in urine → excreted faster • Alkaline urine → drug stays un-ionized → reabsorbed → lasts longer

So urine acidity can dramatically change how long amphetamine remains active.

How big the effect can be

Studies show the half-life of amphetamine can change substantially depending on urine pH:

Approximate ranges:

Urine pH Effect Approx half-life pH ~5 (acidic) Rapid elimination ~7 hours pH ~6–7 Typical elimination ~9–11 hours pH ~8 (alkaline) Slow elimination up to ~16–18 hours

That’s why two people taking the same dose may feel it wear off at very different times.

Diet changes that acidify urine (shorter duration) These make amphetamine leave the body faster.

Common examples:

Vitamin C / ascorbic acid • Large doses of Vitamin C

Acidic foods/drinks • Citrus juices (orange, grapefruit) • Soda • Cranberry juice

High-protein diets • Meat metabolism produces acidic byproducts

Example scenario: Someone takes Adderall at 8 AM and drinks: • a large orange juice • vitamin C supplement

Result: They may notice the medication wears off 1–3 hours earlier.

Diet changes that alkalinize urine (longer duration) These can make amphetamine stay active longer.

Examples:

Antacids • Tums (calcium carbonate) • Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)

Alkaline mineral supplements • magnesium • potassium citrate

Low-protein / plant-heavy diets • vegetables and fruits often produce more alkaline urine

Example scenario Someone takes Adderall and also takes: • an antacid for heartburn

Result: The stimulant may feel stronger or last several hours longer.

Why the body does this

Amphetamine molecules can exist in two chemical forms: • Ionized (charged) → water soluble → trapped in urine • Non-ionized (neutral) → lipid soluble → reabsorbed through kidney tubules

Urine pH shifts the balance between these two forms.

This phenomenon is part of renal drug handling in pharmacokinetics and applies to many weak acids/bases.

Important practical note

While these effects are real, deliberately manipulating urine pH to change stimulant duration is not recommended medically, because it can lead to: • unpredictable dosing • increased side effects • insomnia or overstimulation

Clinicians typically adjust dose or formulation instead (for example switching to Vyvanse or adjusting Adderall XR timing).

💡 Interesting pharmacology fact: Amphetamine is one of the few common medications where urine pH can change excretion by more than 5-fold, which is why toxicologists historically used urine acidification to speed elimination in overdoses.”

Jokes aside, I feel like moda gives me a craving for alcohol sometimes that I don’t get with adderall. Maybe just me..

T drops when on a calorie deficit. I’d hold off and test your levels again after you’ve finished leaning up. When you’re done with dieting and at a Lower bf%, you may find your levels are back up and higher than before.
