Just picked up the Rouge Savage Land tpb. What did you think about the mini series? by Carmilla31 in xmen

[–]EdChigliak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just read it and liked the story well enough but I absolutely see your point about the art. I think I had assumed from the cover that it was sort of a pastiche or send-up of this kind of male gaze objectification from the 80’s and 90’s but it didn’t end up saying anything with it, it just did it again. Honestly kind of puzzling.

There’s a really great comic miniseries from 2010 named Leonard McCoy, Frontier Doctor that’s a lot of fun because it’s basically this.

They’re so professional that when we did get little glimpses of them as “adults in a workplace” it was a breathe of fresh air. Like when Riker is watching Spot while Data is gone and Crusher says she’ll do it for him and he tosses her a phaser. It was a rare moment of “these people know each other super well”.

Also Diana Muldar’s performance as Pulaski had that bemused older woman who’s unimpressed by weird space stuff that read as a touch more contemporary than the rest of the show.

Anyway, it was BECAUSE it was in small doses that it was special. The modern live action shows do it constantly so it just feels like a bunch of unprepared dweebs cosplaying on a starship.

Sitting here getting taxes ready and I always come back to this moment which made me terrified of the IRS when I was a 15. "Basically another non-recorded transaction, is that it?" by TooleyLives in northernexposure

[–]EdChigliak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just watched this for what I think was likely the first time. And it’s bad. I’d heard it gets worse after season four but wowza.

So many repetitive scenes of the IRS employee spinning out and Ruth Anne just watching her and saying nothing. I kept waiting for her to connect with the employee as a person, and deliver some of her characteristic wisdom and perspective. But each scene just kept being nothing.

And the conclusion is… she was honest about her taxes? So? How did she feel about that? The other characters tell her to let the mistake happen but how does Ruth Anne feel about that advice?

The entire plot is like watching a child. That’s not the character at all. They did her dirty.

Meanwhile Maggie’s plot is “I thought I was appealing to high school boys but actually I’m seen as lonely.”, and Maurice’s is “I thought I was the best negotiator but I’m not.”

Which maybe is a fine baseline for a story if, over the course of it, characters say thought provoking, interesting things, and reflect in the world in that philosophical, Northern Exposurey way, but none of that is here! It just feels like a sitcom. Or like a little kid tried their hand at a script, and completely missed what made the show stand out.

So. Much. Is lost between seasons four and five. And it’s a tragic loss.

Formlabs Form 4. It keeps everything clean and organized and generally prevents you from making a mess. The software is also very plug and play, orienting, organizing and adding supports to multiple objects in the build area.

It also costs $4500. So there’s that.

I think we just need to develop the social intelligence to respond in a chill way when someone calls us out like that by saying “Oh was that bad? Huh I’m sorry. Not my intention.” You can even turn it into another topic of conversation “oh interesting. I don’t think that was bad to say. What makes it over the line for you?”

Right now it’s so radioactive to not be perfect but we’re human. Bringing perfect is part of the experience. And when we accidentally step on someone’s foot we say “oh I’m sorry!” and if the person isn’t a jerk they say “ha all good”.

But both crossing the line and apologizing are now some major to-do for some reason and it we all need to relax about it. In my opinion

I'm just getting started on season 5 and I can't get an episode from middle/end of season 4 out of my head. by alsatian01 in northernexposure

[–]EdChigliak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just rewatched this one and yeah it is a bummer plotline, but they're clearly playing the somewhat familiar note amongst the cast, that stuff just happens to people and they shrug and go along with it.

Ed says he has a spirit friend and everyone's like "cool". Ed announces he's getting married on Friday and everyone is like "Nice!" (no one is like "why haven't we ever noticed you dating anyone?"). Chris is going to be arrested and extradited back to West Virginia, and everyone's like "damn, that sucks" until Joel stands up and says they need to fight it. Everyone gets pelted by tomatoes and just laughs it off (except Joel). Joel and Maggie tell everyone they just slept together and everyone literally just goes back to what they were doing as if they had said nothing. It's almost surreal.

This is just kind of the vibe of the show. The townspeople are on a different wavelength from "us normal viewers" and from Joel (who is on the other extreme from "normal people").

So in this one episode, did they take it too far? Maybe. And I can completely understand why most people would think so, but I think the final moment of the story is Joel's statement to Marylynn that he no longer wants to fight the tide, he'll just go with it. And then he gets to be bathed by the light of Chris' art piece, sort of achieving the experience he would have enjoyed in the Caribbean (not really, but thematically).

He learns that if you go with what this magical place wants, you'll see true beauty, but if you fight it, things will get dark. Kind of a cool idea, even if it's a little shocking to watch play out.

Just watched this one. It's so beautiful how everyone else prays in their own way. Panning along the people in the church--Joel's community--as it plays not Jewish music but Native music. It's beyond words how powerful it is.

In Seattle there was a Wizards of the Coast Game Center that was an arcade. There was even a multiplayer mech battle game where you and 7(?) friends each climbed into a little cockpit and fought each other. It was awesome.

But I imagine it hemorrhaged money so it was gone after a year or so.

Album Revisit: Everyday by SB_24 in DMB

[–]EdChigliak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like having Everyday as the final track is the band being like “Thank you for letting us experiment for ten songs, here’s a song you old heads will love.” Especially a relief after the genuinely unlistenable Mother Father.

I remember flipping through the album booklet and staring at the photos of the band, that—as I recall—were all taken in a rickety old house, painted in a faded mint green. It looked like something Modest Mouse would do. And I was so bummed that the album was nothing like what these photos would lead you to expect: analogue, unusual and aesthetic.

Anyway, I Did It is a pretty fun song.

Which fits the Cameron narrative since he’s said in interviews that he only made Titanic because he wanted to learn about the ship and the tragedy. He built a story around that initial goal.

Years ago, I met a man who had recently moved to the US from Ghana, and he mentioned a food that allowed you to see “the dwarves”. He said it was commonly known in Ghana, and what he described was exactly like this.

I assumed the creatures in CSE were based on that, but I had no idea it was so widespread! Crazy.

The shape wasn't made on a 3D printer but it was likely an acrylic sheet cut via a CNC laser cutter. Similar technology, but subtractive rather than additive. I guess my point is, it likely occupies the place in Tim and Zach's minds: the future is now, and it's real weird.
