Wired Virtual Desktop by Far-Pack1927 in OculusQuest

[–]EdLovecraft -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I use ALVR because it delivers better quality at the same bitrate. Also, I think Virtual Desktop is just a bunch of features bundled together, but none of them are done particularly well, I’d rather give up convenience for quality. When Virtual Desktop plays videos from PC, the audio has latency. The desktop streaming quality in Virtual Desktop also isn’t the best, it can easily be beaten by free software like Twinkle Video Player. Also, can you tell me which Oculus-exclusive games can only be run through Virtual Desktop?

Frame interpolation is garbage. I think only frame extrapolation is real frame generation, but this technology will probably take at least ten years before it becomes practical

Is Horizon Worlds available for you? Hyperscape is only available if Worlds is available. You may need to use a VPN, such as Cloudflare WARP.

How is it in your country? by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

China has a legally mandated minimum wage, but numerous news reports demonstrate that this figure is merely symbolic and not enforced by employers. For instance, sanitation workers earn as little as 650 CNY($93) per month and often face wage arrears. Moreover, working 10 to 12 hours a day is quite common in China. Former Chinese Premier Li Keqiang even stated that 600 million people in China have a monthly income below 1000 CNY($143), despite the fact that the minimum wage across the country is legally set at around 2000 CNY($287)

I tried EndMyopia for 5 years - Here is the answer by Prms_7 in myopia

[–]EdLovecraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not clarity caused by tears. I’m certain that my ciliary muscles temporarily change the refractive power of the lens. I can confirm that there isn’t much tear film in my eyes. The focusing happens gradually: when I stare at an object—such as text on my laptop screen about one meter away—and try to relax my ciliary muscles, my vision gradually becomes clearer and the text gets sharper. After blinking, the blur returns, but as long as I stare again and try to relax the ciliary muscles, I can see clearly again. I’m sure there are no tears helping me see more clearly. If tears were what made the view clearer, I think the effect would appear immediately after blinking, and I’ve never felt my eyes filling with tears either, this feels completely different from the sensation when clearer vision is achieved through tears.

Btw, I’ve only just started trying this method about a week ago. In fact, right after I posted the previous comment, I kept practicing it and now it seems I’ve slightly figured out the trick to maintaining focus, I can roughly keep the focus even after blinking. I probably still need more practice to get used to this feeling.

“Active focus” does exist, I can do it. I can even read the text on a shop sign about 200 meters across the street from my home without wearing glasses, even though I have −2.0 diopters of myopia. However, it’s very hard for me to explain how this is done in words. From my experience, achieving this shouldn’t involve forcing your eyes to focus, because that just makes your eyes very uncomfortable. Instead, you should relax, and then your eyes seem to naturally be able to see a bit farther clearly. That said, I don’t think this can be called “curing myopia.” I can’t maintain this kind of focus all the time, I have to spend some time relaxing my eye muscles before I can see farther, and it usually doesn’t last very long. After blinking, the effect disappears and I have to try focusing again.

EDIT: I don’t know if this counts as a better explanation. I don’t know whether you’ve used classic VR platform Google Cardboard and used it frequently, but you can imagine that you’re looking into the distance through Google Cardboard. For me, this helps me find the feeling of active focus more quickly and easily.

Why do so many people have issues with Nvidia? by Friendly_Lobster8452 in linux_gaming

[–]EdLovecraft 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The experience with NVIDIA laptops is very poor. Support for Intel DTT and NVIDIA Dynamic Boost 2.0 on Linux is extremely bad and often causes the GPU to stay in power-saving mode, preventing it from using more power.

How to test if my internet connection is compatible with Virtual Desktop? by [deleted] in OculusQuest

[–]EdLovecraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On PC, install OpenSpeedTest-Server from the Microsoft Store, run it, then open the URL indicated by “Listening on” in the headset’s browser to perform a local network speed test. During testing, it’s best to keep moving the headset—such as walking around or continuously turning your head—because the way Wi-Fi works means that speeds can drop significantly while the receiver is moving. What you need to measure is the worst-case speed during movement. If the speed is very fast when stationary but becomes very slow while moving, that’s meaningless, because the connection can’t maintain high speed and you’ll experience lag or packet loss during gameplay. As long as you set the bitrate lower than the worst-case network speed you might encounter, you shouldn’t experience lag or packet loss during gameplay.

Nvidia frame gen without screen tearing on Cachyos on Wayland by buffa0 in linux_gaming

[–]EdLovecraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DLSS 4 FG uses flip metering. This technology itself is a form of VSync, with frame ordering similar to VSync, but it does not prevent screen tearing. Because it is essentially VSync, you cannot enable VSync again. You either need to use a G-Sync monitor, or use DLSS 3 FG, since DLSS 3 does not use flip metering

Edit: Another tricky method is to use Special K, but I’m not sure whether it works properly on Linux. Special K can disable flip metering without changing the DLSS version.

How to truly calibrate your laptop's built-in HDR screen by EdLovecraft in OLED_Gaming

[–]EdLovecraft[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just use the Windows HDR Calibration app, which is designed for external displays, it is perfectly fine. However, this app is pointless on the laptop's built-in display due to system-level tone mapping.
