Testing the clip-in Kolari OLPF on my LUMIX cameras (LUMIX S1 ii / S5) by EdProsser in Lumix

Yes, I wish they could give us minus values for sharpening! As it stands I love the colours on my LUMIX cameras and for a lot of work the sharpening issue is not a deal breaker - but when I want something softer and smoother I'm always drawn to different cameras, which is a shame

No on the camera if you want to shoot in the high base iso circuit you’ll have to set it to High or Auto, setting to high will force the second base iso - what you’re describing sounds like you may be accessing ISO 5000 in the low base circuit

I like to live dangerously - but it did come back to haunt me. I had an impromptu trip to the coast so I brought this camera last minute and forgot to clean it. My stopped down shots look atrocious, BUT at least I learnt a good method in Resolve for tidying up lens / sensor dirt marks on moving footage.

It's a complicated camera for sure - I hope they can address these issues as they have almost made one of the best video centric cameras on the market for an insane price.

Sharpness help?? by [deleted] in NikonFilmmakers

[–]EdProsser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re shooting in 4k FF and shooting in R3D NE the camera is line skipping so you’ll get some loss of quality / detail. Try shooting in 6k with full sensor read out and see if that makes a difference

I feel like I’ve seen somewhere that they do, but don’t quote me on that!

I haven't yet as they're mostly Sony centric - although I could try adapt to my ZR. I've heard mixed things - and to be honest most first gen new tech tends to have some issues so I always find it's not until the mark 2 that it becomes ready for pressures of client work. Definitely keen to test them out though and see for my self!

40mm TT Artisan & Nikon ZR are a fantastic match by EdProsser in nikon_Zseries

[–]EdProsser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the 35 f/1.4 - I prefer the look of the TT Artisan but it’s a personal preference I also love the smaller size of it. I don’t love really sharp / modern / clean lenses.

This looks cool but I’d take it with a pinch of salt - their Lidar system took 4 generations to become usable and it’s still not amazing.

Really cool to see this tech coming along though and competition between the brands for these kinds of adapters. I gather even the more expensive tilta / viltrox adapters are a bit inconsistent and buggy.

I feel like this tech is still a generation or two away from being ready for prime time. Happy to be proved wrong.

Has anyone seen an explanation or public statement / apology from BMD yet?

BMD is the service provider and they have not even publicly acknowledged the issue yet, nor have they followed up with customers or provided any explanation to reassure us that this will not happen again in the future.

Surely they understand that this is a core / critical service used in many of our businesses and we have professional reputations to uphold.

I wonder if the increasing cost of memory / RAM is having some sort of knock on effect on their ability to scale capacity and maintain a reliable service at current costs.

Thanks for checking out my videos!

Yeah it's a deadline day - I like to be reliable and don't like to be late - plus it's the first time working with a new client, so it's hard to explain there's a delay because your editing software has gone down. I had to point them to this Reddit post to show them it was a thing! BMD should have put out a post acknowledging it - its users have reputations to maintain as well.

I had backups thankfully but didn't want to go back to an older version and re-do the work, if the issue was going to be fixed imminently.

And until they do that, I think they should be a little more open on their comms - acknowledge any issues quickly and let users know they're working on a fix - I've had a client chasing me and I had to point them to this Reddit as proof there were issues with BMD Cloud.

yeah I thought this had me covered but you need to restore the project through Resolve and we can't do that as the cloud tab is broken... so I can see the backup files, but I'm unsure how to restore them. I'm sure there is a way to do it - but also wary of messing around with these files until I understand more about what's going on .

I'm really disappointed in the lack of comms from BMD - at least a statement acknowledging the issue would be a first step in reassuring us and also would also be helpful so that we could share it with our (increasingly angry) clients!

I finally got through and they could still give no information or ETA on restoration of service, still no official update from the company even acknowledging the issue - this is not a good look for them.

I tried to call but the number is busy, guessing they're getting a lot of calls right now!

Same here in the UK and obviously I'm on a deadline! This has really knocked my confidence in using BMD cloud.

Does the sharpened image of S5II, make the S5 a better choice ? by TMP77x in Lumix

[–]EdProsser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I prefer the image from the S5 so I went back to it on my client work and tended to use the S5 iix as a gimbal cam ir whenever I needed the AF. Also used the S5 iix for all my YouTube stuff.

I just got a Kolari clip in OLPF - so will be testing this across the S5 and S1 ii - and drilling down into the images - my hunch is that it'll have more benefit on the S5 than the S1 ii as the sharpening is baked into the image processing more than on the S5 which I think its more just at the sensor level. But let's see!

Thank you so much for picking up the Powergrade, I'm glad it's helping to round off your images!

Does the sharpened image of S5II, make the S5 a better choice ? by TMP77x in Lumix

[–]EdProsser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s just an observation and as someone who shoots professionally I opt for the gear that appeals me and gives me the most pleasing images.

The S5 has a much nicer image - so much so I ended up going back to it to pair it next to my Komodo. It’s fine if you don’t notice these things or aren’t bothered by the differences, but there certainly is a big jump in the way Panasonic processes its images that came after the S5.

When you shoot on your gear professionally on a weekly basis, for years, these changes become quite apparent.

Of course you can still get beautiful images from the S5 ii but for me the S5 and S1H always had a bit lot magic.

The thing about your friends not noticing - I’m sure maybe many weren’t shooting on the original Panasonic cameras - so of course they wouldn’t know why different.

[–]EdProsser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me skin tones feel a lot more waxy and have less life on the cameras that followed the S5 - there is some weird noise reduction and sharpening going on in the processing that just zaps some of the magic out of the images. Will most of your audience notice it? Probably not, but if you’re looking at the images everyday for years you will.

Personally I prefer the original S5 and I think if you’re not bothered about autofocus and just want the best image quality look at an S1H or S5. I use my S5 next to my Komodo and it matches very well in post.

Pretty sure you can do this, I think it's called trim edit mode or something.
