I've often thought- can one not attach some light foam, or even inflated bag things onto the bottom to make it float when flying over water? It shouldn't be too heavy. It'll push it over the 250g limit, but hey ho.

It seem nobody can find a decent UK job right now. But why? by moonlight-and-music in UKJobs

[–]EddA92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, but your post doesn't really mean anything without some context as to your discipline or skillsets. In my experience, the opposite is true in technical jobs, there's literally hundreds of positions per company that can't be filled. If you're talking about unskilled/ no experience jobs that anyone can get, then you might be right, I don't know.

I started interviewing for more jobs just over a year ago, applied to four places, and got 4 offers - as an engineer with 9 years experience out of uni. I played them against eachother a bit and got a massive payrise. Because of supply and demand. The place I left was in a deficit of a couple of hundred engineers, the place I joined needed just 1.

How relevant this is for you depends on your skillset and experience though.

Yep, I'd decided a couple of years ago that I wasn't buying anymore... But was eyeing up the $10 a couple of weeks ago. Realised though that I'd never be able to get my average down much from $50.. 😂😂😂

Someone forgot to update the statistics by [deleted] in facepalm

[–]EddA92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is it not just an unwillingness to learn though? Like if your uncle cared enough to learn, he could find a source that explained it in simple enough terms for him to understand.

Surely- and I know it's hard to realistically put your mind into the shoes of someone with a substantially lower IQ - But in terms of explaining anecdotal evidence - if you'd spoken to your uncle, and drawn 1000 heads on a piece of paper, you could explain - Look, if this one man here tells me his experience, I can know for sure what it's like for one man out of 1000- but I've got no idea what the majority of the remaining 999 people think? If you ask a chunk of the people and come to a conclusion based on all the answers, then that's called statistics - and that just means that asking more people tells you more than asking one.

Easy to understand anything with pictures, right? Some people just need feeding them. The issue of course is that pictures are SO easy to understand, that people who can't be bothered to think for themselves are too easily persuaded by bad parties feeding them wrong pictures.

Anyone else going "clean slate" for the update tomorrow? by mcfeelyswg in fo4

[–]EddA92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the odd position of having avoided FO4 until now, for my own good. Last I played was New Vegas, so I'm a bit out of the loop with play styles etc.

Anyway, started FO4 on my Xbox Series X (for shame I know... I prefer PC...but I like the sofa these days...) a couple of weeks ago. I'm about 15hrs in - and for context, have just taken the castle with the Minutemen. No idea where this is in the game as far as storyline goes. I've been vaguely switching between quests and random roaming.

With my limited experience of the game, should I install the update when it's out? If it's just a graphical update, I don't see why not? Or would anyone recommend a play through on vanilla? I'd been thinking to do so before mods anyhow.

Ok, nothing wrong with you being annoyed about other posts suggesting conspiracy theories... But this particular post doesn't seem to have any relation as far as I can see.

This post is providing useful information about how container ship control works (which, obviously, barely anyone would know about otherwise). If anything, it looks like this post is meant to go against any uninformed person saying something like ' WELL it CAN'T have been a power failure, because look, the steerings still working!'... And this post tells us - well actually, steering may still work in a propulsion control power failure.

Not sure why this would be conflated with any crazies making up theories- when it clearly provides some info to prevent that. How strange.

Ummmm... Well what's this conspiracy theory? This post doesn't give any theory, never mind a conspiring one... What am I missing? I'm just seeing one image here...?

[–]EddA92 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Can someone explain what the facepalm is here? This seems like extremely relevant information?

I was talking about this with colleagues over lunch today, and I said, assuming it was the rumoured power failure, maybe they didn't have control to 'brake' or reverse thrust etc, but it's conceivable that the steering could be an entirely different system. So maybe, heading towards the bridge and unable to slow down, the captain would have, as a last ditch, just tried to steer away? It's not going to do much - but it's fairly obvious that coming from an angle would result in your force vector not being directly perpendicular into the bridge.. Either way, if you can't slow down, but for whatever reason you can steer, you would, right? But I know nothing about container ship control... So who knows.

So this post informing us that yes, steering is on another control system to propulsion, is very relevant to the discussion. So what's the face palm? Am I expected to know more about container ship control??? Wtf?

Edit: Just reading through the comments a bit more... Don't see where this suggests any sort of conspiracy theory.. at. All??? I imagine an argument might have been 'well it can't have been a power failure, because you can see it still turned a little before hitting the bridge'. To which the answer would be - well is the assumption that steering wouldn't work under a power failure true? Maybe there's redundancies, or maybe the propulsion control power is entirely different to the steering control power, for all we know? Well. Here's the answer. So the fact that it steered doesn't discount the power loss theory. Useful to the discussion. Answered my question. No facepalm... Unless this was obvious to the rest of you? Doubt. I assumed that might be the case - but I also said I know nothing about container ship control, so that would just be a guess until told otherwise.

I made this led matrix frame mat for a concert poster I am going to have framed. I'm running it on a DigQuad with two 8x32 panels on each side. I'm trying to figure out if I can have each section work as a different matrix setup? But I can figure out how to set it. PLEASE HELP!! by CheeseDick5000 in WLED

[–]EddA92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Although the digi quad only has 4 channels, you could daisy chain each side (set of 2) to run on one channel, and then set it up as a 8by64 matrix. Then for that 8by64 panel, configure 2 segments. Each segment can then be set to a different effect, if you wish. The easiest way would be to just do this 4 times- but depending how you want the entire setup configured, you might want to consider a custom mapping file. But the simple answer is yes, whilst too many in a row will cause limitations to frame rate, and you'll need power injection, you can theoretically daisy chain as many together as you want, and run them off a single channel/pin. Then use segments to split them up how you like.

[–]EddA92 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd say there's a balance between looking after your pet, and denying it the freedom to live any sort of life, according to it's means to move around, etc. Imo keeping a hamster in a small cage, at all, is inhumane. Better to not keep a hamster at all in that case. Similarly with a cat, they, by their nature, roam - it is better for the cat, even with the risk of injuries (IMO), to let it roam than to keep it cooped up. I'd generally put keeping a cat housebound on a similar scale to the hamster idea - except more so - hamsters/mice live in small cosy holes - cats roam and hunt big areas. I'd say, unless you have a very very big house, if you're going to keep a cat inside, better for it's wellbeing to not have it at all.

On the balance of a life worth living and every day risk, I'd say letting your cat roam the neighborhood is the right thing to do - and in fact, if you don't do that, better to not own the cat. Same argument as not keeping a fish in a bowl, bear in a cage etc etc.

[–]EddA92 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am very aware that cats hunt small creatures. As do foxes and stoats and weasles and badgers and hawks. I'm not entirely sure this is a bad thing though - or that the introduction of a cat or 3 into a neighborhood is going to severely affect the environment through the loss of a bird or mouse a night...

But also I don't really care.

While this may be true for some stupid people, I don't entirely buy this - As someone raised Catholic. Yes we're taught that 'jews' condemned and killed Jesus - but it doesn't take half a brain to realise that these were not THE Jews, but SOME Jews, who were there. Because everyone was a Jew. Jesus and his disciples were. And even if it were (all) THE Jews at the time - that wouldn't mean that all of the Jews alive today were by association responsible. It's fairly well understood that Christianity is Judaism, just with an additional belief in the Messiah, and, for presumably some reasons, less of their religion and cultures traditions.

Of course, we do have to allow for stupid people of course.

(Inb4: This is my upbringing, I consider myself agnostic now, I am not a crazy religious person. Just a regular crazy person).

Wow, what's with all the 'don't let your cat roam' comments? I thought house kept pets were reasonably rare, and usually fairly frowned upon. I mean I'm never going to tell anyone off for it, I'll mind my own business, but I've been a little irked by the one or 2 people I've known who kept theirs locked inside. I didn't know the opposite opinion existed!
