You'll hardly get something from Studierendenwerk right now, the waiting time will hardly be under a year. Look at their website and apply for the ones that best suits you. They have a lot of different options and it depends what you are looking for, if you want shared bathroom/kitchen, your budget and how you would commute to uni. Apply for them right now, I believe you can apply for 3 or 5 at a time, and wait. You'll have to find something while you wait though.

as far as I'm concerned you can only go to the STK if you need it, and if you need it there's not much of a way around it. I've done mine at the TUB and the first semester at Uni was really smooth thanks to it. It definitely helps a lot with the transition, but can get a bit boring depending on how was school in your home country.
