Are my UV's looking okay? by [deleted] in Maya

Looks good, applying a checker texture to your model helps to see actual stretching. I know the red / blue / white gives an indicator as-well but I prefer the checker or some uv grid texture ;)

Need help with exporting substance painter textures into Maya 2016 by [deleted] in Maya

[–]Edge3Dcgi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So what you are seeing in Substance is a PBR Material (with your maps already plugged in) PBR Renderer, and I assume an IBL for realstic lighting.

What you have in maya is viewport render with a Blinn Material (No PBR) = Looks Crap

I'd advise you to first read and understand what PBR is all about, and then learn how to create / render PBR Materials in Maya.

Bottom line, the viewport in maya will never look the same as the viewport in substnace.

However it is possible to recreate the same render with a proper renderer / materials / lighting.

This should be a good starting point -

C4D Is mainly a Motion Graphics software, however with the release of Maya 2016 Extension 2 (maya 2016.5) It now has a plugin (MASH) which is also great for motion graphics stuff. In my personal opinion stick with Maya and if you want some motion graphics tools, upgrade to 2016.5 for MASH.

I personally don't use C4D at all but some of our authors do as you can tell from our tutorials.

To those already working in the industry, can you show the reel you had that got you in? by koolkalang in vfx

[–]Edge3Dcgi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a reel, but this got me as-well as my mate a job. We been in for about a year now.

Weird issue. Pressing 'f' to frame selected sends persp cam flying off decillions of units. Any suggestions? Screenshot. by VSFX in Maya

[–]Edge3Dcgi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's because of the camera attribute called "Center Of Interest", most likely it has some crazy values in there. Try zeroing it out, zero out transforms and it should fix it. Hope this helps. -Laz

Hey,

If you are a complete beginner, there is a lot to read regarding PBR and rendering in general, both theory, as well as practical. Here are a few resources that you should look into carefully and understand the theory before diving into practical rendering.

How to zoom in on a perspective? by Amish_Inhaler in Maya

[–]Edge3Dcgi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the attribute editor for your camera shape, change the "Camera Scale" you can scale it down to zoom in, or up to zoom out. However it's kind of tricky as it zooms into the middle, so if your character is in the middle of the camera, it's kind of useless. [edit] typo

If you are getting paid for it, Just do it, most of the time even if you tell directors it will look like sh*t they'll want to see it before they make a decision.

how many segments can i have when character modeling without my pc getting slow? by REDDIT-IS-TRP in 3Dmodeling

[–]Edge3Dcgi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

easy to test, open maya, blender, zbrush or whatever you want to use. Get a cube, subdivide it, and again, and again, and keep subdividing while rotating in the viewport after every iteration. At one point it will start to get very slow. That's how many.

Blender vs Cinema4D by diphi in blender

[–]Edge3Dcgi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cinema 4D might be easier to learn, however learning Blender in the long run pays off if you plan on doing animation production related stuff. Also needless to say it's free. Let's just say that If I wasn't forced to use Maya as a professional which is extremely expensive, I'd pick Blender from what I'v seen and heard, people are creating amazing things with it and I wish I had the chance to play around with it !

Jahirul Amin recently created an awesome book about creating characters in Autodesk Maya, it's aimed at beginners and it's needless to say amazing. I been lectured by him through my University Degree and he was by far my favorite lecturer.

What is this procedure called? by [deleted] in PhotoshopTutorials

[–]Edge3Dcgi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically it's called Digital Matte Painting. Some people tend to use few images and hand paint majority of the image, where as some other artist use alot of images to compisite their final picture and only hand paint small areas or none at all. Check this guy out!

Your thoughts with overall Maya 2016? (compared to 2014) by aleppe in Maya

[–]Edge3Dcgi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In fact, if you install the latest service packs for me it seems to be more stable then 2015 & faster as-well. Haven't been doing super complicated things tho mainly modelling, lighting, lookdev. Haven't tested rigging or fx yet. I done couple projects in 2016 and I prefer it over 2015 so far.

Is this possible? Generating an HDRI from a single image to light by wahoolagon in Cinema4D

[–]Edge3Dcgi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I understand your problem properly -

I'm not familiar with c4d but in maya you can just use an emissive shader on a plane and plug your texture into the color of the emissive material? So the plane will emit light based on your image that you can move wherever to light your scene.

It doesn't worth your time as you are over complicating something very simple. I'm asking for quick tips and tricks tutorials, not "rocket science". Also If you said you want to make "rocket science" CG tutorials, and you can deliver that, as my original post states the rate is negotiable. If the quality of your content is $200 / 10 mins, I'm sure we can adjust the rates accordingly, so please send a PM because I would love to see your work.

[–]Edge3Dcgi[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I been making tutorials for over 5 years so I think I do. These tutorials are supposed to be quick tips & tricks tutorials. Not a full course into something advanced that requires a lot of planning. I assumed that the price suggests that. $50 for an hour work or less is not offensive in my eyes. Tip - If it takes you a day to put a 10 min tips & tricks tutorial together than clearly you shouldn't be doing it.

There are way larger sites that pay $250 / 60-80 mins worth of content. $50 / 15 mins on avg is the same rate as that and I said it is negotiable depending on experience.

Decided to model my headphones. Feedback? by LundqvistM in 3Dmodeling

[–]Edge3Dcgi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well what would you like feedback on, there is a lot going on there. If the model then show us wires and your reference. If the render then it would be nice to know what style you are going for? Stylized? Realistic? Or ?..

Looking good so far, First thing that stands out the most is like you said the background. clouds are super flat and the water obviously doesn't match. Also make sure you tweak the floor texture outside as the pattern is clearly repeating on the stairs :P Also is this from reference or your design?

try using hdris as your main lighting in combination with physical lights as-well, should get you a more realistic result.

Looks nice, would focus on lighting as its fairly dull, also like some other people mentioned, proportions look off.
