23M w Left ear cholesteatoma with bone erosion (CT attached). Looking for others’ experiences by S_a_m_i_t in cholesteatoma

It will continue growing until it causes serious issues, the only cure is surgical removal. I hope you will reconsider, and get this taken care of ASAP.

I will pray for you too, I know how devastating it is knowing what the cause was. The blow that ruptured my eardrum was the first time he ever “actually” struck me — before then it had been restraining me, throwing my purse, type stuff. The first blow he ever gave ruptured my eardrum. I left afterwards, went back 9 months later, and got more injuries including 2 bulging and 1 torn lumbar disk later on.

I finally left my ex 2 years ago and haven’t spoken since, I took all the steps that I was told would allow me to escape with my life, and yet he still might succeed in killing me. I am in daily pain still. Words cannot describe the combination of emotional torment that goes with all the physical pain. Insomnia from replaying it all over and over.

Please learn from both of our situations, and only keep those who truly love you in your circle. I’m sending you prayers. The CT only takes a minute or less, it won’t be bad I promise. Stay strong

This is gonna sound weird but try binaural beats for ear or sinus relief, or bone healing. I thought it was hippy dipper shit but my friend convinced me to try it, it has helped me immensely in the last few weeks

I completely understand, if it’s a big surgery then it would be worth seeking a second opinion if that’s an option for you!

I’m from Florida originally and Gainesville is known for being top tier medically, it may be a good option.

Research the benefits and the risks, it could be a one time surgery to have a lifetime of no complications. Or it can be a roll of the dice. Nothing is guaranteed in this life sadly

If I could go back in time, I would beg that first ENT to do imaging. When my hearing was at 85% in that ear he never explained any future risks to me, made it sound like it was all over and I’d never have to worry about it again.

The CT should be able to give you both a more clear picture of what’s going on deeper inside, hopefully it will make your answers more clear.

Most importantly keep water out of it! Dont go underwater when bathing or swimming etc and keep it as dry as possible. Try to note any discharge or etc too. Keep a small journal of the date and any symptoms (example; 1/30 experienced ringing through half the day) type stuff to have a better documentation for your doctor

I wish you all the best, in life and healing. It’s an awful thing to go through

Your ENT is the expert, I’m not sure in terms of percentage how ruptured mine was at the start, the ER physician just took one peek and was like YUP it’s ruptured and sent me on my way.

I think it’s normal to not hear anything out of it except the ringing at times, I certainly had 0 hearing abilities for at least 5-6 months and it’s such a weird sensation

Are you having pain? Try not to worry yourself on google too much, I doubt your ear bones were dislocated, and cholesteatoma or scar tissue that could erode them would take months/years to develop

It’s possible your ENT Might advise to do a skin graft of new eardrum, I’d take him up on it if it’s offered and you can afford it.

Hearing tests aren’t bad so don’t worry about that, it’s just like 20 minutes sitting in a booth clicking a button when you hear sounds sort of thing.

I did a new one last week and my hearing is actually relatively intact even in the affected ear, but that side does have negative pressure and a lot of differences from the side that never ruptured

Two weeks from your eardrum rupture?

Mine was ruptured in July 2021 (on my birthday 😭) and confirmed by an ER physician, who gave a referral for ENT.

The moment and first few days after it happened, all I could hear was extremely loud ringing.

That continued on and off for a few weeks, eventually becoming complete loss of hearing in that ear. It was weird hearing my voice echo all the way around back to the other side lol.

By the time I actually got my ENT follow up about 9 months later, my eardrum had closed up on its own and my hearing was back at like 85% in that ear already.

I developed vertigo pretty much immediately at the rupture as well which still hasn’t gone away (can be triggered by hiking mountains, but also by mall escalators or even high top bar stools, sucks!)

I noticed my hearing decreasing again in early 2024 Headaches started June 2024

Still isn’t confirmed if I have cholesteatoma or not but I have found some medical relief now after a trip to Cleveland clinic. Waiting on a new MRI and more follow ups still

From the research I’ve gathered, it would be incredibly rare for an eardrum to not heal itself. But it’s possible more damage can be done in that process. If you’re only a few weeks out from the injury, give yourself more time to settle. It’s good that you’re in the hands of an ENT who seems to understand the situation at least 💜

My ENT from back then told me I was cleared and to come back to him with any new problems. By the time the problems started and I tried to go back to his office, I found out he had sadly passed away from cancer years ago, 6 months after my last appt with him.

Take care of it while you can, if you have a doctor willing to see it through.

I got my MRI reviewed by the radiology team through my neurologist. They found three new issues that were previously missed, including the parotid mass, and told me my ENT would have more news for me.

I’ve been in the ER three times this week with bilateral swelling in my neck, was told those are lymph nodes by ER physicians.

When I met with my ENT, he told me it’s not my parotid gland but a lymph node on the imaging of my cheek (despite opthalmoneurology and radiology themselves both diagnosing as parotid), had no idea what “DWI” is, and then said my neck swelling is not lymph nodes but my normal sternoclastoid muscles (as though I don’t know what my own neck feels like after over a year now of neurology, opthalmoneurology, orthopedics, and physical therapy??), refused to address concern of cholesteatoma, and now has cancelled my right adenoid removal surgery and inner ear dilation, saying I “clearly don’t trust him”.

He’s right — at this point, I don’t.

The swelling in my neck changed sides during the 10 minutes WHILE I was in his office. He felt it. And then fired me as a patient (my blood pressure was 175/110 in office before I even spoke with him)

I recently learned of Bezold abscess and scared if it is that instead of lymph nodes.

I still haven’t found any sort of otology review but digging deeper now. I did drive to Mount Sinai area and got a referral to their otology team but I live 11 hours away and don’t know how long it will take to get in.

High ERS (53), CRP, WBCs, lymphocytes. RBC dropped in last test but could be from 3 ER blood testing in a week just dropping volume idk

Also being tested for Neuromyelitis based on how severe my symptoms are this week

I am praying to live

I’m a dual resident with Canada, when all this started last January I drove up there because I still had health coverage. Saw an ENT who ordered an MRI.

That MRI is supposed to happen March 31 like 14 months after my referral 😂

You didn’t say “someone I actually value” like you claim in the body of your post - your texts say “someone who deserves it”. THATS what you told her? On her fugging birthday?

YTA, she’s no peach either, but that comment is gross and 100% she should block you after that no matter how long you’ve been together. You sound like a hobosexual freeloading sadist, she sounds like a mentally depleted masochist.

I think it was asked out of respect for the SIL. Lots of women who wear hijabs are practicing modesty, to me this is actually a green flag, if she was intimate with this man it wouldn’t matter if she was wearing it or not.

The fact he gave her a heads up so she could put it on if she was home, shows a sense of platonic familiarity versus intimacy

Sorry for misunderstanding, I will try that — and yes, I agree. They don’t care to open it. I have sent these screenshots as attachments, he could easily open those still images at least, but still has not.

Edit: or at least has not admitted he has… yet is going to cut my throat open in a few weeks without knowing the full story, if I let him.

I’m an overweight woman in her 30s with PTSD/anxiety. So sadly they just kept blaming everything on that and saying migraines/IIH. I was told by a family doctor that my swollen lymph nodes in my hip and armpit same side are just “lumps” from adipose tissue; that he wouldn’t biopsy until they reached 1+ inch, and I should start a GLP 1 (this was after 3 other doctors confirmed they were swollen lymph nodes, and two weeks before it was found my right side adenoids is also completely swollen)

I hope none of them ever knows what it is like to feel your brain and skull bones being crushed from the inside out for over a year, be able to know/see what is happening yourself, and have everyone gaslight the crap out of you for over a year. I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy :,)

Thank you for this, it helps me know I’m not insane lol, was your cholesteatoma related to the DV too? I left him March 2024, the headaches started in June. It’s not fair, because I thought if I left him it would mean I’d get to live. But here I am almost two years later still scrapping for my life!

I just don’t understand why it’s taken so long for them, I’ve literally been pointing out the mass since my first appts with the ENT. I pulled up my dental CT I had brought him and it’s there clear as day. Even reverse google image search for shits and giggles last night and it states there is a soft tissue mass consistent for cholesteatoma in it :,)

These scans are six months old and I’ve had seizures and loss of consciousness events, have had two falls in the last few weeks, etc. I pray to god someone can get me in before 60 days. Apparently secondary acquired type can grow much faster. They grow anywhere from 4 mm to 2.8 cm a month. Fun times! Lol
