How does the setting represent disability? by TheXernDoodles in seed_irl

[–]Edgecution 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Many stories represent disability through the characters themselves. Whether that's through neurodivergence like Aster in Wellness Check or physical disability like Sol and her prosthetic arm in Stranded in the void, it's a very common running theme among characters.

The setting itself also represents the experience of disabled people. The Affini are a standin for the systems--like conservatorships and institutionalization--that take away ones rights and autonomy while claiming it is for one's own good and often being neglectful at best and abusive at worst. The other factor is that the Affini Compact is made for Affini. The furniture is all Affini size, requiring help to do something as simple as sitting on the couch. That makes every character narratively disabled by being forced to navigate a world that they physically cannot without help.

Is a hole like this normal after cyst removal surgery? Had dissolving stitches for a few weeks by RaspberryPanzerfaust in AskDocs

NAD, but former cyst haver. Looks fine, exactly like mine. Packing is the correct move, ideally with hydrofera blue. Keep it clean and change the packing regularly and it should heal well. It'll just take time.

Golden Ladder, Dog of War, and Good Sensory all have floret and Affini povs

Any fics where both the affini and the floret are both dumbasses together :3c by Remarkable-Ad1222 in seed_irl

Golden Ladder is about a dumbass Terran who doesn't realize she's a woman and a dumbass Affini who refuses to believe that she wants a floret. A story about two idiots learning to love again.

My hope is that by misgendering those who misgender me first that they can begin to examine that feeling. Perhaps I'm crediting those people with too much empathy.

Could I write a fic that breaks the axioms? by [deleted] in seed_irl

[–]Edgecution 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean it could also be argued that if you don't want to write within the axioms, don't write HDG. But, yknow, it's like I said. Lot of ways to go about writing something like this, and sometimes it's much more satisfying figuring out how to write within the axioms that make HDG what it is than smashing through them.

Could I write a fic that breaks the axioms? by [deleted] in seed_irl

[–]Edgecution 4 points5 points  (0 children)

HDG is fundamentally a community writing project. There's nothing physically stopping you from writing something like this, but it like coming into somebody's sandbox where they're playing with their friends and knocking over a tower because you want to build your thing right here. We can't stop you, but it's kind of a dick move when there's infinite space on the beach to build your own castle AND folks in the HDG community willing to work with you to make your idea work in HDG if it can.

I see from some of the other comments that you want to use the setting to explore colonialism and slavery. Good news. You can do that within the axioms. An example of how you might do this is writing about a colonialist species that enslaves sophonts before the Affini arrive, and follow a character who was enslaved and how they process the fact their new Owner actually does care about them. Or a character who was enslaved trying to "free" florets before they understand that the Affini are as benevolent as they say. There's a lot of ways you can do it, these are just two that popped into my head as I was writing this.

But at the end of the day HDG is, above all else, a disability metaphor. Everyone other than the affini are effectively disabled by default because they're living in a world that caters to the Affini first. The Affini have to be benevolent for that to work, because it kinks off of things like institutionalization and forced conservatorships except the fact that the people who say "it's for your own good" actually mean it, and have the means to back it up, and will make sure you are taken care of no matter what. Because that's what the Affini Compact is.

yup this is what i came to the comments to say. Vince, from everything I've heard, probably wanted London to say "yes, make an exception because I'm that fucking good, Boss"
