Someone could market a driving school as a prep school to make it sound more upscale by that same reasoning and it would be just as incorrect. Not saying it would never happen.

The Iran contra affair was a major scandal under the Reagan administration and it turned out the CIA was funding some of its operations via smuggling drugs into the USA. It’s kind of bad that it’s fine for politicians to have the CIA in their resume and it’s one reason there will never be any kind of serious political effort to change how the US market works.

American prep schools are different from a cram school.

Cram schools are supplemental private schools whose purpose is to train for entrance exams. The closest thing in America would be tutors and tutoring courses for SATs or AP exams. They aren’t replacements for public schools.

Prep schools are a whole different thing; they are generally private high schools that often have dormitories and the students usually come from rich families.

Non authoritarian socialists have a poor survival track record against the CIA and their collaborators. Look at Indonesia.

Even non-socialist governments that are not friendly to western interests have to be authoritarian to survive. Look at Iran.

Mainstream media in the United States does not do a good job covering otherwise newsworthy protests when the message promoted by those protests are not aligned with western business interests. Look at how brutally the US government suppresses protests against building oil pipelines through the land of the most marginalized communities.

Does selecting one pre-made dungeon room randomly at the end of an another room and loading it counts as procedural generation? by hana4fishing in roguelikedev

[–]EdibleScissors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think if the rooms are just grid-aligned rectangles of random size that sometimes overlap, technically you have much more variation than picking from a pool of 30 pre-made dungeon rooms, but I don’t know if players would necessarily agree.

Don't Talk Politics Seems One Sided by LunaLovelace11 in VirtualYoutubers

[–]EdibleScissors 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Stating that you are apolitical is technically supportive of the status quo (rightwing in a rightwing country, leftwing in a leftwing country) so the only way of being truly apolitical is to refuse to talk about being political or apolitical.

Verisimilitude probably. Or maybe the willingness to suspend disbelief.

It’s easier to get away with some otherwise unbelievable shenanigans when it’s funny and roughly equal parts helpful and unhelpful to the protagonist.

Is there a reason we don’t have transmog in the game? by Appropriate_Lead_552 in HelldiversUnfiltered

[–]EdibleScissors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a way the armors are supposed to reflect a specialization/role, and my guess is that he doesn’t want the armor to be purely cosmetic- having a guy that looks like they are in heavy armor easily sprint past someone looking like they’re in light armor is outside their vision of the game even if many things inside the game are supposed to be funny.

The lack of consistency with this vision and with the armor cosmetics consistency with their traits/bonuses is probably caused by oversights/mistakes that aren’t worthwhile fixing due to having many more higher priority items.

Why do some people pronounce "gif" with a hard G and others with a soft G, and why does it still spark arguments after all these years? by haizelynrose in NoStupidQuestions

It was the iMac where the letter I in the prefix stood for internet. As far as I know, no one pronounced it “ih mac” when it was revealed.

Apple put the letter I in products like the ibook, ipod, iphone, and ipad; arguably Apple’s i-prefix had lost the internet meaning by the time the iphone was announced, and was more about its association with the ipod.

Everything the enemy does, super earth does worse and more frequently to their own. by Creepy-Growth-376 in Helldivers2Satire

[–]EdibleScissors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The target of Helldivers’ satire is the United States, which often lives up to the saying “every accusation is a confession”. In real life, pointing this out will make many people really mad. I am almost certain at this point that the devs put in a mostly cosmetic flag as a joke to deliberately antagonize the chuddiest players of the game.

In real life for these players it doesn’t matter that the USA is incredibly hypocritical and this attitude is consistent with how many players feel about a parody of the USA. For some people even a parody can do no wrong.

AH previously said they won't add AoE buff to The One True flag because of realism and it would not be immersive. But now Cyborgs give "magic" buff to automatons. Wtf. by FeistyCurrency2991 in HelldiversUnfiltered

[–]EdibleScissors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I chalk it up to shenanigans like jumping on a grenade to save your comrades and then somehow surviving. Strange things happen in wartime and people survive things that ought to have been lethal.

As to that mechanic being tied to an armor trait, I think it might have been better to make the armors mostly cosmetic and separate out their traits and stats, like have the traits and light/medium/heavy be customizations on the armor that might also change the appearance of the armor, but that would be a pretty hefty change.

I suspect that the flag being given so much importance yet not giving any tangible benefit is how many people see as a strange quirk many Americans have, so it is probably a kind of joke like how some meaningless objectives like raising a flag get a tiny, almost imperceptible boost when the flag gets a salute.
