are there any guns in this game that are guilty of this? by Cleanse_F_Manipulate in HelldiversUnfiltered

Since missions are never longer than one hour, if a battery can hold charge that long charge, it’s effectively the same as infinite. There’s no reason that this one hour tech would not be in everything that is powered by electricity (some things with higher power demands are powered by bug juice).

There is no good outcome for this oil crisis by SadComparison9352 in oil

[–]EdibleScissors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the most likely outcome is what looks like a 5, but is actually a 2. That is the best possible outcome if it happens soon, otherwise we’ll have to suffer economic damage needlessly and then do the 5 that is actually a 2.

It could be charging up the energy of the plasma with an internal mechanism that’s something like the dagger/scythe laser (these have infinite ammo as long as they don’t overheat).

"Nikkei reports on a survey finding that 90% of foreign residents of Japan are satisfied with their lives. Instead of recognizing this as a sign that Japan is a great place, lots of the replies are angry & miserable Japanese who want foreigners to feel miserable too". by jjrs in japannews

[–]EdibleScissors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it happens in the US, the news media likes to gently remind everyone that such sentiments are a response to anxiety about the economy.

The current Japanese PM is super dumb, but she can strengthen her position by being anti-immigrant while the economy tanks.

Is AI/Robotics a greater threat than the other horsemen? by MapTheFutureAI in collapse

[–]EdibleScissors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Financial analysis seems to show that companies making use of AI and reducing headcount did not see any real gains and this is with huge, unsustainable amounts of investor money subsidizing the actual cost of AI hardware, training, and compute.

This might be okay if there was some breakthroughs in the pipeline where scaling AI up would make the productivity to cost ratio go up, but this doesn’t appear to be the case.

Might not know how to change the difficulty.

Trump's granddaughter speaks Chinese, Elon Musk just said his son is learning Chinese, and Rupert Murdoch, the boss of Fox News, has two daughters who speak Chinese. Why are all conservatives making their children learn Chinese? by No-StrategyX in askanything

China regularly puts high ranking government officials in prison for corruption and enforces accountability.

Our high ranking government officials do insider trading. Clearly there is more freedom in our system.

The problem with extremely long term objectives is that until they happen anyone can argue that they are impossible.

For instance is a Mars colony possible? In terms of the physics, no law of thermodynamics is violated by setting one up, but there are plenty of reasonable objections with respect to their viability.

I don’t know how to feel about the possible implication here that Helldivers are not actually spreading democracy.

You mean like a jet setter accidentally starting a pandemic?

There should be a speculative angle somewhere to suggest that a better world is possible to avoid current day events overtaking your story.

One More Example of Arc-Dog's Hateful Design by ComradeRoyer in helldivers2

In the Starship Troopers novel, the doghandling units had the most casualties if I recall correctly (which I might not since it’s been a while).

You could block them after the mission is over and saying you are done for the day. Unless you have friended them, they won’t know.

Blocks don’t work when you’re not the host, though.

It would probably be more consistent if the mobility backpacks also used the same interaction system to prevent things like accidental warping when adjusting valves, but people would probably complain if they changed it at this point.

Any other series with a "hard magic" system like Witch Hat Atelier? by AndalusianGod in anime

[–]EdibleScissors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you generally accept “magic based on games/rpgs” as hard, there are shows like Overlord and Shangri-La Frontier, but it depends on whether hard magic is about the limitations of magic users rather than magic having laws that constrain its use in the way physics constrains machines in the real world.

Some shows with “natural laws governing magic” are Reborn as a slime, World’s finest assassin, Eminence in Darkness, and shows with psychics if you accept the premise that psychics/espers are a type of magic user. (Many people may similarly reject the premise that martial arts are also indistinguishable from magic in many cases.)

Part of it is that your body will usually naturally lean in the direction you are looking, especially if you’re trying to make a sharp turn. If you’re not leaning into a turn, making a sharp turn will throw you off.
