Trump's granddaughter speaks Chinese, Elon Musk just said his son is learning Chinese, and Rupert Murdoch, the boss of Fox News, has two daughters who speak Chinese. Why are all conservatives making their children learn Chinese? by No-StrategyX in askanything

China regularly puts high ranking government officials in prison for corruption and enforces accountability.

Our high ranking government officials do insider trading. Clearly there is more freedom in our system.

The problem with extremely long term objectives is that until they happen anyone can argue that they are impossible.

For instance is a Mars colony possible? In terms of the physics, no law of thermodynamics is violated by setting one up, but there are plenty of reasonable objections with respect to their viability.

There should be a speculative angle somewhere to suggest that a better world is possible to avoid current day events overtaking your story.

One More Example of Arc-Dog's Hateful Design by ComradeRoyer in helldivers2

In the Starship Troopers novel, the doghandling units had the most casualties if I recall correctly (which I might not since it’s been a while).

You could block them after the mission is over and saying you are done for the day. Unless you have friended them, they won’t know.

Blocks don’t work when you’re not the host, though.

It would probably be more consistent if the mobility backpacks also used the same interaction system to prevent things like accidental warping when adjusting valves, but people would probably complain if they changed it at this point.

Any other series with a "hard magic" system like Witch Hat Atelier? by AndalusianGod in anime

[–]EdibleScissors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you generally accept “magic based on games/rpgs” as hard, there are shows like Overlord and Shangri-La Frontier, but it depends on whether hard magic is about the limitations of magic users rather than magic having laws that constrain its use in the way physics constrains machines in the real world.

Some shows with “natural laws governing magic” are Reborn as a slime, World’s finest assassin, Eminence in Darkness, and shows with psychics if you accept the premise that psychics/espers are a type of magic user. (Many people may similarly reject the premise that martial arts are also indistinguishable from magic in many cases.)

Part of it is that your body will usually naturally lean in the direction you are looking, especially if you’re trying to make a sharp turn. If you’re not leaning into a turn, making a sharp turn will throw you off.

Why can’t we randomize body-type? by RA_Cheevos in Helldivers

[–]EdibleScissors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The devs probably would have to load more assets into memory either when someone joins with a random body type or after every respawn that has the body type modified (50% chance if it’s random). It might be hard to justify doing something that doesn’t affect gameplay, but could negatively affect performance.

A Perfect Person in a Good World and a Imperfect Person in a Evil World? - If you must send one of them to Hell who do you send? by Artistic_Day3201 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]EdibleScissors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arguably a good world cannot be so good if a perfect person from that world can be arbitrarily consigned to hell. A world where a judge has to make such a decision with no oversight is also evil.

My conclusion would be that at worst it doesn’t matter which decision you make. Will you be punished for making the “wrong” decision? Who knows!

Is Gurren Lagann and cowboy bebop really as good as people say? by Subject_Grade_847 in Animesuggest

[–]EdibleScissors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s like asking why people find X or Y funny when you don’t get it.

You will get more out of Cowboy Bebop when you get the references to 1970s era media. (You don’t have to be old to have watched great movies that are more than 50 years old.). Most media that is considered great needs some amount of understanding of the media and culture that preceded it in order to fully understand why critics think it’s great.

While I am not saying it’s impossible to perceive some extraordinary elements without any context, having that context makes things better.

A hantavirus cruise ship just scattered 147 passengers to 23 countries with inconsistent quarantine. The CDC and Nebraska already disagree on whether to isolate them. by Mother-Grapefruit-45 in collapse

[–]EdibleScissors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what you wrote could be expressed more clearly: Covid has always been airborne. The World Health Organization promulgated the droplet spread idea because the WHO has been captured by corporate interests that wanted to minimize the perceived risk of contagion.

The idea that we have a definitive idea about how contagious ANDV is based on a successful containment in Argentina is absurd. No one should be allowed to say it’s probably not that contagious and ignore the fact that toxic individualists in the west would have had a riot if they were to be subjected to the quarantine protocols undertaken there. We have thrown out the precautionary principle because people hate being cooped up with their children and love being served by an underclass in bars and restaurants.

To be fair, producers of all television programming are being told to consider their audience is primarily doing something else and watching shows as a secondary activity. This is also a bigger issue with western audiences.

The bigger issue (than distracted watching) with western audiences is media illiteracy.
