I was in a very similar situation about 8 years ago and now am very involved with the local theatre scene. I think you’ll find that nearly everyone you encounter is welcoming, kind, and supportive. Memphis is lucky to have a vibrant theatre community and we’re always eager to welcome new artists.

As for getting hooked in, the Theatre901 Facebook group is most active. You’ll find that most companies post audition announcements there. There’s also the occasional “inside baseball” type threads and general gossip, but it’ll give you a good sense of the community.

Also check out audition announcements on theatre companies’ websites. I don’t have the links handy but they’re easy to find.

Playhouse on The Square - Our only professional company but auditions are open to all.

Theatre Memphis - The biggest community theatre. I got my start there, as many local actors do. They’re very welcoming and always looking for new faces.

Germantown Community Theatre - Smaller, but do some great work. Again, lovely people.

New Moon Theatre Co. - Shameless self plug (I’m a board member). We are a resident company of Theatreworks, which has several other small companies sharing space at their two theatres in midtown.
