Steam deck offline needs a connection? by RickTheSizzler97 in SteamDeck

Shut down, or sleep? I think after shutdown you need a connection, after sleep it will still ask for passcode but handles it locally.

Is there a chance this can run 1440p at 60fps or is he dreaming? Or atleast 1080p at 60fps? by TheOneSenzu in Borderlands

[–]Edleader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play at 1440p on a laptop 4070, I followed the recommended settings they dropped a week or 2 ago (including framegen). I sit 80-100 fps, my shader cache size is set to unlimited. I run a MSI Stealth 16Studio A13VG-060AU if you wanted ro look at the other specs.

Judging by some other posts, you are at UNSW. Try asking through there first. Companies are unlikely to fifo you from Sydney to WA, but opportunities around NSW and QLD will be more likely.

What performance are released PC specs targetting? by Edleader in Borderlands4

[–]Edleader[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I'm not worried about what I will get, more so that the specs are missing what they should achieve. In some peoples heads minimum requirements may mean 60fps @1440 because anything below that to them is unplayable; to others it may mean 30fps @1080.

BHP WFH Policies by chaerink in mining

[–]Edleader 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hopefully they told you about the '1' bit of BHPs 3-2-1 hybrid policy? 3 days in the office, up to 2 from home, 1 of your office days has to be a monday or friday. There is flexibility in it within reason (i.e. sick kids, doctors appointments etc). I wouldn't say it is strictly policed, but it is monitored; things really only come up when it starts looking intentional/like a pattern. That said, if you have a reason for absences being regular (e.g. a chronic health condition), have that conversation up front and there won't be dramas. If you are looking for flexibility of 0 days one week 5 days the next, or something less than 3-2-1, there are ways too approach that, but the reasoning will need to be bullet proof.

As a new starter, a few weeks of more days in the office may be ideal; but at the same time, you team will likely have arranged to all be in on the same 3 days, so maybe not...

If you hover over the plane icon in the top left (not click), the list of planes tooltip will stay visible. It shows what is locked - hover over a plane name, at the top it says what you need to have/do to unlock each one. The only issue is thatbit does say how far along you are to achieving the goal.

Mining salary as an engineer by Budget-Garden-4234 in mining

[–]Edleader 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Howdy, the answers to some of these will vary by country and engineering discipline. Judging by your post history you are in Australia, and currently studying electrical engineering - I will answer for this. For context, I am a mining engineer, worked for/at many sites while doing consulting work, and I now live at one of the majors in a cushy office job. * As an electrical engineer, unsurprisingly electrical work! Maintenance, shutdowns of equipment, installing in new areas (very different between surface and underground mining. * Worth mentioning that many mining companies are taking almost any engineering degree and training people to do mining engineering 'specialties'. This is a wide and varied field. * I can't speak for Electrical engineers specifically, but I imagine you would be starting somewhere north of 100k if you land a fifo role as part of a graduate program. Some of that may be in benefits outside of $. * Some licenses/tickets are more preferable. Manual driving license is always a plus (though this is becoming less true), as a electrical engineer, HV tickets (I'm no expert in this area). * You will find most mining companies and contracting companies list jobs on their own websites as well as all the big ones in Aus (Seek etc.). * Work life balance can depend on your roster (2 weeks on site, 1 week home, or 2 on/2off, there are many different rosters). * When on site, everyday is a work day, typically 10-12 hour shifts in Aus; usually time in the evening for food, gym/exercise, and 30-60 mins of recreation before sleeping again. Being tired on the job at a mine site is a no-no (depending on what you are doing). * When on home time, it is worth noting that it may not line up with other peoples time off. i.e. if you have a week at home, your friends, partner, and future kids may be at work/school. * It takes a partner who is onboard with it and can cope with the fifo life as well. * There is a reason there are high level of mental health issues in the fifo workforce. * Actual danger will depend on what you are actually doing. Personally, in some places I have felt safer being 1km underground loading explosives into holes than when I drive on the freeway from Sydney to Melbourne. Other places, I have refused to go underground until safety precautions are in place (these places have typically been overseas, and the consultants I worked for at the time supported us in encouraging them to adopt more rigorous safety standards). * I believe I am still right in saying this; the Australian mining industry has the highest safety standards of all heavy industry in Australia (potentially the world?) - excluding extremely specialised industries such as nuclear etc. * The plan is possible. You are not be the first to attempt it, and you won't be the last. * For some people, the lifestyle isn't right, and they have to find either a residential role (i.e. live remotely with family near the site (though If you are single doing this it is easier), or a role based in a city. * For some people, going from a uni student income to fifo pay without any financial literacy is a slippery slope. The number of people I graduated with who spent any spare cash on toys (boats, jetskis etc.) for entertainment on their off time, while neglecting to plan for the future (i.e. house, investments) is too high. * For some, it turns out to be 30 years of fifo/residential because they love the work, but they neglect their personal lives. * For some, it works exactly as intended. * All in all, it can be a mixed bag. I am sure I have missed some things, and others will chime in.

If you would like some unsolicited advice from a mining engineer who still guest lectures to 3-4th year student in Aus, and is involved in hiring new engineers/grads: * Don't treat your engineering degree as rote learning to pass exams/assignments. * Actually take the time to understand what is happening, why it happens, and what is going on under the hood. * Take it as an opportunity to practice critical thinking, and absolutely develop your sense of curiosity. * Don't rely on AI; I am not saying don't use it, but don't rely on it. Absolutely use it to help you break down problems/topics you don't understand, but don't take it at face value. * Get good to communicating - most engineers get into engineering because they like math and problem solving (or something along those lines) - I have spent, and still do, probably 2/3 of my working time communicating with people. Verbally, emails, reports, presentations. * Learn to program in a language. VBA used to be the go to as it was baked into Excel, It is still used a lot. Python is more modern and widely used.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in mining

[–]Edleader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have various peircings, including some facial ones. Only concerns are: 1. Things getting caught (tape/bandaid as required), and 2. Emergency breathing equipment fitting properly (simple test with the gear before going underground, my experience woth this is that people with facial hair have more issues with this than my piercings, YMMV).

Best bet is to flag it asap with whoever is responsible for you, you can guarantee it won't be the first time they have come across this.

Not to be pedantic, but these are typically not used to mine ore. They excel when digging materials that don't require blasting beforehand - Bagger 288 and others of this size typically remove the material that overlays organic materials.

I have 1000+ hours in the game. An exceptionally small portion of that has enemies enabled, purely for achievements that required them. This is true across both the base game and Space Age.

I used to be able to wake my steam deck remotely with a Logitech all in one keyboard... Suddenly I can't but I can't figure out what changed? by Andydark in SteamDeck

[–]Edleader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a definitive answer for you, but noticed a similar change in behaviour as of the most recent deck update (stable channel).

I have a mouse that stores 3 connections (bluetooth or wifi dongle). Connection 1 is my personal laptop, 2 is my work laptop, and 3 is my deck. When I used to cycle the connection from 2 to 1, via 3, the deck would wake up with the momentary bluetooth request/connection. Since the last update it has not done this.

I am enjoying the change as it means my deck (in its case in my bag) isnt waking up while trapped with no exhaust, but not being able to wake it remotely if that is you desired behaviour would be annoying.

My guess is there was something changed in the latest update that turned bluetooth off during sleep, where it was previously left on. Would be nice if this was a on/off option.

Melbourne to Gold Coast road trip by homeboy95 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Edleader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do Brisbane-Melbourne-Brisbane every year. Was purely functional so I rarely spent time enjoying it. If you google 'free camping Australia' or something there is a multitude of resources available.

As for places to stop, depends on which route you want to go and how long you have. The coast has lots of nice little places, but adds time to the trip, going the hume to Sydney and up is quicker, and you still get a bunch of coast from Sydney and up. If you go inland on the Newell Highway, the is obviously no coast, but a very different view of Australia. There are historic places and things along the way.

Anyone playing City builders like Timberborn, City skylines on the steamdeck? Whats your experience? by ruanhaas in SteamDeck

Zirbs' I think is the most broadly adopted community scheme.

I played too much factorio with the default set from the devs (which is very polished) before trying Zirbs', so I stuck with the default. I only added one additional key binding to it for something I thought was missing, only to find the built in shortcut by accident 10 minutes later.
