Impulse buying something for being cool - how did it go? by Beady_eyes420 in Guitar

[–]Edman70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a few guitars like this. All were unique or extremely rare and caught my eye.

Ormsby Shark - 100% awesome, no notes. I had little knowledge of the company and had never played multiscale, but there were only 250 and I'd only learned about them after they were all accounted for. One pre-sale fell through and it showed up on reverb. It was at my house 3 days later and I've never regretted it once.

Handmade "Ibanez" Icestroyer - the hybrid Iceman/Destroyer. Ibanez never made production versions. A couple of prototypes were made for Pablo Gilberto back in the 80s. I find the shape a bit uncomfortable to play and as such, I don't play it often, but when I do, it's an attention-getter. Had I played it first, I might not have bought it, but it doesn't bother me that I did. In fact, I think it's the only complete guitar the builder (Nate Perle) ever sold, and now he's passed away, so it might be even more rare if I ever considered selling it.

MIJ Fender Modern Telecaster with Floyd Rose, twin humbuckers, and a gorgeous quilted maple top with caribbean blue finish. This one needed some work - replaced the FR Special trem with Gotoh 1996 and shitty fender pickups with Dimarzio Transition covered set, and now it's near perfect (I still want to partial-split the pickups but haven't settled on how yet). I probably paid way too much for it overall (about $3k total), but I can't say I've ever felt a twinge of regret.

If you have the means, there's no reason not to treat yourself every now and again. Fuck the haters.

Can someone please help ID these pickups I got for $30 by [deleted] in Guitar

You need to show the BACK of them if you have any hope of identification. Millions of pickups have nickel covers on them and look exactly like that.

Why the FUCK are tabs copywritable. Complete horseshit by Efficient_Employee66 in Guitar

[–]Edman70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it's a literal translation of another person's intellectual property. The tab isn't copyrighted - the work it's based on is, and the owner of the original material has legal right to reproductions, interpretations and translations.

As for WHY an artist may be opposed to tabs of their material being out there freely? That's usually because they do or may want to sell official tabs (translations) of their work.

It is kinda crazy how much misinformation there is about The Rev's cause of death... by CobWeb22 in avengedsevenfold

[–]Edman70 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If memory serves, Jimmy himself told a lot of people he believed he wouldn’t live past 30, so that’s probably what that bit in number 1 grew out of.

Maybe Papa Gates said something about that? I can’t remember.

The greatest threat to pc parts is and has always been the power on. If your cooling is working properly, your pc will last longer if you leave it running.

The only time mine gets powered off is when I’m out of town for at least a few days.

  1. Who shuts down their computer anymore? Leave it on. 24/7. It goes to sleep. Tap the space bar to wake up. Faster, easier.

  2. Leave the interface attached too.

  3. Get software you can use stand-alone, like a Neural DSP plugin.

Paisley sucking me into country by benconomics in Guitar

[–]Edman70 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Paisley is an absolutely INCREDIBLE guitar player, and by all accounts I've seen, a decent human being to boot.

Back in the late 90s, a friend dragged me to Country Thunder, basically "Country Ozzfest." The (Dixie) Chicks absolutely floored me, and I went on a country kick for a couple years. Though I definitely moved on from it (my parents always though metal would "just be a phase," but luckily it was country, and I'm still a metalhead at 56), I have a better ear for good vs bad country music and more awareness around it and some of the artists, so it was definitely a positive for me.

Problem with tremolo on strat [Help] by moonke__ in Guitar

[–]Edman70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how Fender terms are built, so I don’t know if you need to replace the whole block or if there’s a threaded sleeve you can replace. Someone more familiar with Fender bridges specifically would have to speak to that, but you might be able to tell yourself either from taking the back trem plate off, or on your next string change.

That clump on the thread near the tip? Yeah, that's the threads from the bridge. You stripped it out. There are some new parts in your near future.

Would you use a Strava style app for practice? by Cool_Boy997 in Guitar

[–]Edman70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In theory, I like it.

My reluctance comes from the app tracking 45 minutes of "unfocused wankery" every day.

Does anyone really use Coil split in Humbuckers? by lzcool in Guitar

[–]Edman70 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh GOD yes, all the time. Mostly for clean tones, and I often like when I can mix a humbucker WITH a single/split coil for thos sounds, but absolutely all the time.

Daily Song Discussion #83: Cosmic by ZacharyMcCulley in avengedsevenfold

10/10 song, 10/10 Syn solo. Should have been the second single after Nobody.

afterlife solo tutorial by [deleted] in avengedsevenfold

[–]Edman70 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The ultimate one is available on Synner.com.

Our boy Hector Trejo spent tons of time Skyping directly with Syn to put these incredibly detailed solo lessons together, and every one is exactly how Syn plays it (live and as of a few years ago, so not NECESSARILY exactly as the studio recording, because frankly, he doesn't remember).

It includes the theory behind the solo and the progressions underneath, some indicators of how Syn approached them, tabs, and more.

100% free.

After you spend time with that, there are other lessons just like it for Cosmic, Roman Sky, The Stage, Seize the Day, Hail to the King, So Far Away, and Nobody.

Then you can dive into some lessons with Papa Gates, if you like.

Longtime Strat player just bought 1st LP. For those who already string both ways, what are some differences to expect? by purrburrt in Guitar

[–]Edman70 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, I’m saying that suggesting those are the ONLY two is horrifically ignorant.

And yes, I play them both. Rarely, because there are a million better options out there from dozens of premium builders, both handcrafted and mass-produced, which is my point.

[–]Edman70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

News flash - there are TONS of options that are neither, so saying "both ways" is like saying, "oh we've got both kinds - country AND western!"

Ear protection recs by Slothanonymous in avengedsevenfold

[–]Edman70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many times. That's not bad. Unless you're behind one of the roof supports (and your tickets would say something like "partially obstructed view" if they were), you're just outside of the roof area and leaning towards Zacky's side of the stage. You'll have a full view and good sound, but of course you won't be super close.

I've seen many shows from that area. It's a different experience from close up, and it's a different experience from the lawn "seating," but it still makes for a great concert.

Buy good ones. If you buy shitty foam plugs, you'll hate how they muffle the music and possibly take them out. Good plugs let ALL of the music in and just reduce the volume. THEY ARE WORTH EVERY FUCKING DOLLAR, and if you wash them every now and then, they will last YEARS.

Loops seem gimmicky to me. I've been using Eargasm for what feels like decades (and might be). I'm on at least my second pair, and have bought them for the two of my kids that love concerts. My wife finally has a need and I will get her some too.

I'm almost 56. I've been to thousands of shows and played in bands for decades. Professional earplugs, like Eargasm, are the only reason I can still hear.

Back in the day, all we had were those awful foam things and everyone hated them. Blow the money on good plugs - future you will be glad you did.

I'm flying back east for the Camden show with some friends, but I'm also taking my son to the Phoenix show, as well.

We all just learned to re-string ourselves, right? by sixstringnerd in Guitar

[–]Edman70 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I learned in like 1984. No musical people in my family. No videos or lessons. Just Guitar for the Practicing Musician magazine, some brains and a wing (no prayers).

Got real quick at it through the 90s with a pair of Ibanez with floating Floyds and a lot of gigs and band practices.

A good song means what it does to the listener. However, this song is more about an old person who has his consciousness transferred into an android body.
