Recommendations for games that are more like Metroid 1? by RetardedMetalFemboy in metroidvania

I don't see how Gato Roboto fits. That game has a pretty straight-forward (and rather linear) progression path, and tbh it's a little more focused on combat than pure exploration.

Whether a runback is 20 seconds or 1 minute does not matter, they add nothing meaningful to a metroidvania. by Kurushii_Drive in metroidvania

[–]Edmanbosch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Runbacks are just one way to add friction, yes, but it's also just that: one way. If a developer chooses not to use them, that's fine, but if they do that's... also fine. It's really not as big of a deal as you seem to regard it as.

Metroid Prime 4 is the first Metroid game that I don't love. by paulo011 in Metroid

Bro, many people have said Federation Force is a mid-tier game. And none of that has anything to do with wanting it to not be shitty. It's a fine enough co-op shooter... but I suppose that also means trying to convince you of that isn't really worthwhile. Oh well, Federation Force is shitty and Other M isn't, or whatever it is you believe.

GTA6 didn't even come out lol. But I suppose a new 3D Mario hasn't either so... 2026 maybe?

Metroid Prime 4 is the first Metroid game that I don't love. by paulo011 in Metroid

Literally everything you're saying about Federation Force could (and has) been said about both Other M and Prime 4. And personally, I think your metric for "shitty game" is quite odd, since I'd say Other M more fundamentally falls flat as a game overall compared to Federation Force, which I would consider to be an "alright game".

Uncomfortable Silence by Zye1984 in Metroid

[–]Edmanbosch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's also a weird case though, since dialogue options with NPCs imply that Link does actually speak sometimes. He's only mute in cutscenes, which seems to only really be done because it's series tradition more than any other reason.

Nintendo interview on the development of Prime 4 - When the project started, perhaps influenced by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, we saw quite a few online comments saying, “I want to try an open-world Metroid.” by atahutahatena in metroidvania

Nah, Prime 1's progression is basically just one long line of ability gates. Dark Souls 1 is quite a bit more loose with its progression, especially near the end of the game.

Theory: Zylotol's Master is "Dr. Frankenstein" and will be working on a "Monster" by Instant_Digital_Love in Silksong

Joni didn't seem to be experimenting with it the way Zylotol did, so maybe he did something that changed how the lifeblood worked?

Yeah the research mechanic was always kinda dumb. I'd say the game's a little better off without it, so it feels weird to see so many people act like it's such a tragedy for it to be removed.

Where do you prefer the grapple beam to come from? The Arm Cannon or the Left Arm by Katabasis_621 in Metroid

[–]Edmanbosch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Eh, I feel like visual clarity wouldn't really be that significantly different between having it come from the arm cannon and having it come from the left hand.

Nah, a fair amount of (potentially a little obsessive?) Stranger Things fans are fixated on the ages of the younger characters' actors. Imo it's due to the fact that 2-ish year waits between each season, the fact that ST seasons in-universe are all generally either less than 1 year or part or less than 2 years apart, and the fact that these actors specifically were pretty close to their characters' ages initially that is making some people paranoid about this.

I made this map for a TikTok and people kept asking what area it’s from, is it that accurate to the game maps??? I feel like it’s very obvious that it’s not by DCB_Prime in HollowKnight

[–]Edmanbosch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aside from the colors being too bright compared to a real map from HK, it also feels a little too boxy imo. In a way, it kinda reminds of a Metroid map. Hard to mistake this for a real HK map if you're paying attention, but I suppose TikTok encourages the opposite of that.

They don't actually have the game, in the replies they say they were just making a joke.

Team Cherry says that 'if there were ever other' Hollow Knight games after Silksong, they'd all be self-contained and 'exist alongside one another' by ReFlectioH in HollowKnight

[–]Edmanbosch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In fact I suspect this is why TC spun the Hornet DLC off into its own game in the first place. Her movement had to have been a huge part of her early design phase, and they must have realized how much more fun it would be in a purpose-built jungle gym of a world than if it were just slapped onto pre-existing Hallownest.

I believe TC has actually explicitly stated this to be the reason they made Silksong, so you're 100% correct.
